Startup Weekend Central Coast is over and what an amazing result!

Startup Weekend Central Coast hosted its first ever event on Sept 18-20 in the Gosford Smart Working Hub. The 54-hour long event involved a creativity-fuelled weekend that provided a platform for participants to develop their technology idea, meet like-minded enthusiasts, build their network, get face time with thought leaders, and learn new skills.

60 aspiring entrepreneurs including students from the UoN and Central Coast Grammar, coders, business people and the unemployed registered to attend the first ever Startup Weekend for the Central Coast. Startup Weekend is a global organisation and the event has been held in over 100 cities across the globe. The Central Coast has now joined over 45,000 Startup Weekend alumni, all on a mission to change the world.

Fifteen ideas were pitched and 8 teams were formed around the best ideas which were chosen by the participants. The teams collaborated together over the weekend to build the business case for their idea. On the Sunday night they pitched their idea to the panel of judges including Alan Williams and Bruce Cottrill, two entrepreneurs from the Central Coast and Tony Burrett from Blue Chilli, which partners with entrepreneurs to help build, grow and invest in their new tech startup businesses.

The winning team

Jessica Gledhill’s team was judged the best idea with the Maker to Market concept, an online platform connecting makers, manufacturers and distributors to turn great ideas into awesome products. Jessica is the founder of The Creative Workshop, a group of like-minded artists, designers and crafters who are establishing the Central Coast’s first makers space for creatives which will open its door at Imperial Centre for Xmas. Jessica is now on her entrepreneurial journey with BlueChilli and their stellar Startup Advisory team.

About the global organisation

Startupweekend.org  is a global community of over 100,000 Startup Weekend alumni with a common mission: to change the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to Canada to Brazil, coders, marketers, designers, business people and students are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams and start companies. Now the Central Coast!

Over 30,000 entrepreneurs in over 100 countries rally together in the name of innovation and community each year. It
is a  is a global ecosystem of community leaders, founders, mentors, investors, and corporate partners who are working closer together to support entrepreneurs, tech startups and their communities.

The Future

He is also the marketing manager at the Sydney Seed Fund, Australia’s pre-eminent seed capital fund that typically invests $50,000 to $150,000 into early-stage high growth technology companies. Thai is the co-founder of Kapcher, an invitation-only marketplace for talented freelance photography and videography creatives. Kapcher was the most voted Australian startup in the Global Startup Battle and also ranked among the top 15 most voted under E-commerce category in the Global Startup Battle organised by Startup Weekend. Before founding Kapcher, Thai was the Finance Director of AIESEC Australia, a local branch of a global organisation that provides youth leadership development through international internship programs in over 110 countries. Towards the end of his term, he was also selected to be part of the International Congress Committee Team that organised the largest youth leadership conference for 800 young leaders from over 110 countries in Egypt during the political turmoil. Helen Mitchell
Co-founder,CEO, Busivid

As a supporter of SMEs and startups, I teach business owners not to be scared of video… it should be as easy as sending an email or a text message.
I have spent over a decade making video for some of Australia’s largest companies before I realised the process could be automated. With a vision to democratise video production and bring video within the reach of all brands – large and small, I cofounded Busivid. Recently appointed as the Entrepreneur Advisor for The American Association of Sales & Marketing, I have incredible tenacity and drive which I love to pass on to those with the courage to innovate. The Busivid suite of products are particularly relevant to any business person wanting to improve communication; but startups in particular will find my unique approach thought-provoking and motivating. I will also speak frankly about being a female CEO with a tech solution looking for funding and strategic partnerships in the US market.

Sandrine Gaynard
Co-founder, General Manager, TreeTops Adventure Parks

“I look forward to sharing our entrepreneurial journey from startup to the global markets at Startup Weekend Central Coast.”
I was a young tourist when Frederic (my husband) and I first ventured to Australia from my home country of France, settling on the Central Coast.  Twelve years later and 4 children we established Ecoline with a purpose to research, design, develop and construct unique eco-friendly facilities within the trees with a Wow factor. We spent many years convincing both banks and the government that TreeTop Adventure Parks idea was a legitimate business proposals and complied with environment regulations and safe. More TreeTop Adventure Parks are at planning stage, including one in Melbourne. We have also developed the EcoTrack and EcoZip systems that have been patented in Australia and in over 30 other countries.  Since the release of the Crazy Rider rollercoaster, which took two years of research and development, more investors have been knocking at our door. It twists and turns through the treetops of the Ourimbah State Forest. Ecoline is an eco-certified enterprise and has won many awards for tourism and innovation. We love challenges.

Event Judges

Tony Burrett
Chief Operating Officer, BlueChilli

“We’re well on our way to reaching our ambitious goal of creating 100 startups by 2016 and hope that a startup on the Central Coast will join us.”
BlueChilli is a company that builds, grows and invests in awesome tech startups. With 58 startups in its portfolio already and more being added all the time. We now have a bigger goal of building a $1billion portfolio by 2020. Before BlueChilli, I ran my own start-up, The New Agency, and before that I was the founder of News Limited’s motoring business Carsguide.com.au. I have built and grown digital agencies and started my career as a journalist. I am so looking forward to being a judge at Startup Central Coast.

Alan Williams
Founder, Chair, CTO, BlinkMobile || Founder, Williams Business Incubations

"I look to invest in people with a solid understanding of the value they're going to add, how they're going to do it, and who's going to pay for it.  They need to be able to sell their vision, have a business plan, some understanding of business basics, boundless enthusiasm and a great work ethic.”
My company Williams Business Incubations angel invests in technology startups, Green Tech startups and social investments. BlinkMobile, is one of the successful startups WBI has funded. In 2015, BlinkMobile was awarded the Best Enterprise Mobility Solution at the Cloud World Forum in London. WBI funded startups have met with various levels of success; some shaping for great exits or generating substantial dividends, others just make a wage or have crashed and burned. I was a founding VP of TIBCO, now a major software company, which debuted on NASDAQ in 1999. I also started and managed the expansion of Trading Room Infrastructure company Teknekron Software Systems around Australia and Asia, which was purchased by Reuters. I am Deputy Chair of Central Coast Grammar School and a board member of a social enterprise, ET Australia, which runs training and a secondary college for students who drop out of school.

Bruce Cottrill
Principal, CtechBA Pty Ltd

“We develop and fund technology startups and then help grow businesses that are sustainable with a community and environmental outcome."
I purchased my first business at 22 which grew to over 100 employees and developed into a high-end manufacturing and services business. I now invest in businesses in transport, FMCGs, retail and in technology to improve customer experiences. Currently working with thinkable.org a crowd funding website to support young researchers pursuing blue sky research. I am also involved in developing a recycling construction and demolition waste business, working on a customer engagement system for construction project managers and developing a distribution network for DNA marking technology. Recent projects include Commercialisation Review of Advanced Materials Research, Commercialisation Plan of DNA Marking for Security and Chain of Custody, turnaround of plastic recycling business and commercialisation support for remote monitoring business. I am passionate about startups and growing businesses that sustainably fill broad community needs and I support Program for Young Entrepreneurs in High School (YES Awards).

Dennis Silvers
Non-Executive Director, Chair and currently Business Development Manager, Insightbusiness Pty Ltd

“With demonstrable success as an innovative and forward thinking executive, I will bring to the startup weekend an understanding of research and development and business expertise.”
I have worked across a number of industries during my career in both the private and government sectors including developing and implementing programs to encourage innovation and facilitate R&D at many different levels. Beyond my thorough understanding of R&D and its relevant applications, I also have a strong skill set in the business development field, having successfully developed and implemented a number of strategies and frameworks that have enabled businesses to move into new fields. I bring to any early stage startup a wealth of development and business growth experience in a number of sectors, including renewable energy, eHealth, advanced manufacturing, medical devices and ICT

Mike Sandys
Managing Director/ Oddball Web Solutions

I am the founder of two startups and have a broad and extensive knowledge of online marketing strategies which I am excited to share at Startup Weekend.

I have been involved with computers for the past 30 years after getting my first computer at 4 and growing up in the Silicon Valley. My passion is also in consumer behaviour and what drives us to make purchasing decisions. After a stint in marketing and research roles for some of Australia's biggest brands, I am now combining my understanding of purchase behaviour with digital marketing strategies. A great product doesn’t ensure success, it’s who knows about it that really counts.
