Prepare for the Global Startup Celebration

Be one of over 15,000 entrepreneurs who will come together for hundreds of events during November 10-19, 2017 for Techstars Global Startup Weekend!

Techstars Global Startup Weekend Mackay (TGSW) connects entrepreneurs, organizing teams, and startup communities around the world. As an attendee you will get access to exclusive resources to help prep for success at Techstars Startup Weekend and make connections with mentors and other startup teams. To help you keep growing after the event, the winning team of each event will receive helpful perks for building their startup as well as a showcase in our global channels.

Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend long experience. Your ticket includes:
  • 7 full (and delicious) meals over the course of the weekend
  • Benefits and discounts from our global partners
  • One-on-one time with amazing mentors
  • A new network of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs eager, like you, to change the world.
  • All the internet and coffee you can consume.

Watch the video below to see what you can expect, and if you’re feeling inspired click on the “Buy Ticket” button now!

Speakers

Lynda Erwin
Director - Going That Way App

My passion for HSEQ is my motivation for excellence in a field that is wrought with hazards, risks and quality control issues.

I haven't always been in HSEQ roles, previous to starting in mining in 2004, I worked my way up the corporate ladder of an agri-business to the position of Manager.

At the end of 2012 I moved to Mackay, Qld and it became very evident to me that there was a gap in market within the Mackay area for a HSEQ professional, specialising in auditing, gap analysis, and systems development. Many small businesses had grown rapidly during the mining boom and wanted to improve their systems but didn't know how. I formalised the knowledge that I’d gained through working within the coal mining industry then started my own HSEQ consulting business.

My Business has continued to grow via word of mouth and I have been contracted to either do safety inspections, facilitate training, conduct gap analysis and/or pre certification audits against AS /NZS ISO 9001, AS / NZS ISO 14001 and AS / NZS 4801 as an external consultant. I also assist business to develop Integrated Management systems.

While I continue to assit the businesses of Mackay, I am also looking to expand my knowledge and network by working for / representing a JASANZ certified body as an auditor (RABQSA Certified).

David Deakin
Business Director

Introducing Dave Deakin to the mentors of Startup Weekend Mackay!A bit about David!
I left school at the age of 14 and could not read and write. At the age of 16, I was reading kids book to self-learning how to read and write. At 20 my brother and I bought our parents out of the family business. Bakers Creek Wreckers. At 22 I bought my brother out and a couple years later I sold the business.I started a retail clothing shop with a partner and after 18 months I sold out of my share and started a gym which I sold after 3 years. I went looking for a business that was needed in Mackay and would make good money. I bought to Mackay the first upmarket coffee shop, Billy Baxters which was opposite the new cinema that was opening. At this time you could only buy instant coffee and sit on plastic chairs, we spent over $200,000 on the fit-out which 20 years ago was a lot of money. This store was number 1 in Australia for 2 years running. We went on to open another one in Mt Pleasant which did not perform as well due to the shopping centre. I was also the Franchisor for North/Central QLD. When the guys who owned the Franchise sold out, I sold out at the same time 5 years later.I went on to Open Deakins Homeloan Supermarket, this business was number 1 in QLD and no 3 in Australia for volumes written within our group. We maintained this for many years. We made the finals at the Australian mortgage awards for Best Broker and Best Customer service which was down to the final 4 out of 14,000 brokers Australia wide.
From here we opened Deakins Property Developments, Deakins Property consultants and Deakins Financial Solutions. All successful businesses in there own rights. Sold down all these businesses and now in the same premise is 8 Limb Yoga which my wife Sue runs.
At 45 I pretty much toned down all my business interests and just manage the properties that we own and a couple of little business interests.David brings extensive business knowledge to his #mentor toolkit!
