Curious about what it's like to build a real-life startup? This is a call for you to get your idea off the ground.

If you want to startup your own business and have some fun, then we think you will find Startup Weekend will be a life changing experience.

Don't worry if you don't have an idea! You'll listen to passionate pitches from others on the Friday night and pick the one you love the most.  If you do have an idea, you'll pitch it and have just 60 seconds to get others (including IT developers, business people & designers) interested in your idea!

After you've got a team, the fun begins as you start solving the problem, looking at how you'll build your solution and getting under way.  In just a weekend, you'll be finding your real-world clients and determining how your solution will solve their problems.  For the IT developers and technical participants, pick your favourite language and framework and mock/hack out a demo or two as you go.

We've got a team of experts to mentor you across the Startup Weekend in all aspects of your fledgling startup - from IT to business to design and more.  It all wraps up on Sunday afternoon where you give a final pitch to a panel of local startup figures -- and you might even score some investment to keep going!

In short, the goal of a Startup Weekend is to bring passionate potential entrepreneurs - just like you! - together to collaborate on innovative ideas, and have a life-changing experience whilst doing it all.

Startup Weekend is a global phenomenon.  With over 1500 events held in more than 150 countries around the world, it's your connection to the world of entrepreneurship.

Sounds awesome!  What's the weekend involve?
The action begins on Friday evening with a keynote, pitches, team formation and idea generation.  You'll turn ideas into startup opportunities, coding or mocking up a demonstration (or full versions!) to get feedback, all leading up to final pitch presentations and judging on late Sunday afternoon.  There's some cool prizes too, though the skills you learn will be the real win. You'll learn heaps, connect, get social, inspire and discover an awesome community that's here to help your passion become action.

When you register you will get:
  • All your meals and drinks over the weekend.
  • Access to a huge range of mentors who have done what you want to do.
  • A chance to win some of the huge prizes up for grabs.
What makes Startup Weekend so valuable is that it helps you:
  • Validate your business model.
  • Build a team around your business idea.
  • Gain exposure to investors and advisers to help get your idea off the ground.

Speakers

Kat McArthur
Entrepreneur, Founder

Kat’s idea and a popup team won Startup Weekend Gold Coast in 2013 and topped the Global Startup Battle. Some in the team stayed on and WunderWalk was bootstrapped and born 6 months later - a free global travel app that combines your interests into instant walks all over the world, like shopping sprees and tourist trails. WunderWalk won places in both Queensland and NSW entrepreneur programs to incubate and accelerate, including seed investment capital. WunderWalk achieved global accolades with Condé Nast Traveler ‘as one of the best apps changing the way we travel in 2014’. TechCrunch also spotted WunderWalk amongst only several other Australian startups that year. Kat was finalist 'Entrepreneur of the Year' by Women In Technology Queensland. This is Kat’s first startup and first app. Kat’s background in science, global sustainability, technical project management, and a passion for travel served her to become the all-rounder to drive both daily operations and strategic direction of WunderWalk. After 2.5 years and a lot of unpaid founder labour, the app was retired after not reaching viability. An outcome more common than not in the app business. Kat says her growth was equivalent to an applied MBA. In 2017, Kat is a digital nomad, writer, and hobbyist inventor. She would be happy to dedicate her career to improving digital experiences, because ‘they are pervading daily lives and there is so much to improve.’ Kat is also helping businesses scale by technical change management to optimise triple bottom lines.
