We’re happy to announce that we are getting Townsville’s 1st ever Startup Weekend off the ground! The goal is to create an environment where passionate people can come together to get things done; to learn, network, bridge the gap between trades, expose potential and see actual results.

Startup Weekend has held 1500+ events in 150+ countries around the world, and we are looking forward to making a big dent in TOWNSVILLE. Furthermore, together with SW events in the Gold Coast and Cairns in the same weekend, this will be the "largest combined Startup Weekend in Australia", including live streaming from each event to the others!

Co-Founder - JESI Management Solutions

JESI provides an efficient and cost effective software solution for managing an organisations entire journey management procedure. The core innovation is the automated multi-platform communication system that automates a response to selected contacts if a traveller does not check in upon arrival.

As one of the Founding Directors, my role has incorporated initial industry engagement, software developmental scoping, sourcing investment and providing overall strategic direction.

Graeme Wood is an Australian internet entrepreneur, philanthropist and evironmentalist. He is the founder of online travel site Wotif.com and The Global Mail, a not-for-profit multimedia site for journalism in the public interest.

Kyle Ashby
Founder :: The Sandbox Santa Barbara | Founder, StartupSB || Startup Advisor

Kyle is the founder of THE SANDBOX Santa Barbara, a creative coworking, collaboration and event space and StartupSB, Santa Barbara's largest entrepreneurial network.

Ashby is also the founder of Kaldera an advisory firms that focuses on strategy, marketing and community building for startups, technology companies and organizations and Travel in Company a boutique tour and travel experience company.

Ashby was on the founding team of BrandLive and has worked in executive, marketing and project management roles with a number of multinational companies including Yardi Systems, Citrix Online and Forms+Surfaces. 

Kyle is an active advisor to startup companies and has taught classes in marketing, innovation, and entrepreneurship at the University of California Santa Barbara, and Antioch University Santa Barbara.  

Kyle organized the first four Startup Weekends in Santa Barbara and has facilitated Startup Weekends globally as part of TechStars. Kyle was a Startup America Champion and is a founding member of a national Startup Community Building Organization called the Startup Champions Network.   

MBA from Babson College. Undergraduate degrees in Film Studies and Geography from UC Santa Barbara, and is a Certified Project Manager and Certified Scrum Master. 

In his free time he is continues to learn, tinker, travel, surf, paddle, explore the outdoors, play the drums and bass, and spend time with his wife and daughter.


Jane Polak Scowcroft
Business Change Manager, Cairns Digital Hospital Program

Analog by birth, digital by design. A problem-solver with a purpose, I relish the opportunity to create positive disruptive change. My experience covers the breadth of large multi-national companies, start-ups, tertiary education and healthcare, where I've sought to balance creativity and innovation to achieve results-based outcomes.

Jayant Varma
Founder, Consultant and Developer

Jayant Varma is a technophile and was introduced to computing from the days of 8-bit computers and Z80 chips. He authored the book “Learn Lua for iOS Game Development” and is currently working on swift and other iOS related titles.

As a Founder, Consultant and Developer at OZApps (www.oz-apps.com), he helps organisations and individuals integrate technology into their business and strategies. He also conducts trainings, workshops and writes blogs to share his knowledge with community.


John Chandler

Since graduating from a Bachelor of Science, I have done many things including sailing around SE Asia for a year. However, for the past ten years, I have been Director of Business Development for two Faculties at JCU. Previously I have been a lecturer, MBA Co-ordinator, business consultant and contractor in the Higher Education sector. I have taught entrepreneurship, business strategy and a wide range of business subjects. I have run a consulting company for six years.


Tracy Raiteri
Social Media Manager, Trainer and Coach

Tracy is passionate about helping local businesses design and implement a digital marketing strategy to leverage technology, especially social media; mobile; content; video; email and database and web streaming. 

Areas of Expertise: Social Media and Mobile marketing strategies, Implementation and Management of digital marketing strategies; Article and Video marketing strategies; WordPress and Joomla CMS; Search Engine Optimisation; webstreaming; computer hardware and software installation. I studied computer science in high school (Turbo Pascal, Visual Basic and HTML), but I chose a Finance/Business Administration path at university because I thought it would lead me to a wealthier life. After a couple of years, I realized that no money can replace the joy of doing something you really like.

Trina Myers
Senior Lecturer at James Cook University

Dr Trina Myers is a Senior Lecturer at JCU and an active member in the local business community. She has a Masters in Business, a Masters in IT and a PhD in Computer Science. Trina's business experience includes  entrepreneurialship, ITproject management in various industry and research projects and corporate management in the electrical retail industry. After 15 years in industry, she began an academic career 13 years ago. Her current research interests include collective intelligence, Web 3.0 and harnessing the crowd methods to enable new business models.


Lindsay Ward
After being a mentor and organiser for the last two Townsville Startup Weekends, Lindsay has decided to help organise but then to be a participant on the weekend. So if you want certain victory, join his team (for relatively loose definitions of 'certain' and 'victory').

Registered Patent Attorney, Owner of TJIP Patents, Trade Marks & Designs - Tara loves technology, problem solving and assisting people at every stage of business to open their eyes to the possibilities of intellectual property (IP) rights and to avoiding the potential serious pitfalls of infringing the rights of others. An honours science graduate with a Masters in IP law, and 17 years experience in London, Sydney, and for the last 5 years Townsville, Tara is able to consider new products or services, trade marks and branding and give realistic, practical advice on protection, or potential problems, from an IP perspective.
