Startup Weekend Education Phnom Penh 2016

Have you ever had an idea for improving education? Here's your opportunity to transform your education ideas into action in 54 hours. Find the right people with complimentary skills & the passion & to work with and learn along the way. No tech skills required! Test your idea with potential customers. Join a community ready to help you take your education concept to the next level!

We're looking for passionate educators, designers, developers, parents, students, and business/non-profit professionals who want to make a difference in education now. Come learn the basics of founding & launching a successful education or edtech venture, while solving real problems in education. You can participate just for the experience -- serious creative thinking, inspired work, and a lot of fun!

The event: We bring together a diverse group of people passionate about making a positive impact on education. In 54 hours, participants share ideas, form teams, build products and launch education or edtech startup.

Startup Weekend Education begins with open-mic 60-second pitches Friday night that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams spend Saturday and Sunday focusing on validating their idea by talking to users, designing/building prototypes and building a business plan with the help of experienced coaches from the education market. On Sunday, teams present and demo their education products and receive valuable feedback from a panel of expert judges.

Soliya Kong

Soliya Kong (Jay) has been in Sales and Marketing for the past 4 years, working with companies to grow their brand especially via Event Marketing. In January of 2015 Jay and 3 other co-founding members won 2nd in startup weekend. which is the company that they are working at till today. It’s a delivery service called Joonaak. As of December 2015, Joonaak has over 50 partners ranging from Online shop to Private sector and even Embassy. He currently is in charge of Joonaak daily operation, including business development, sales and customer support. He has a degree in Communication and Professional Sales from the University of Washington.

Stephen Paterson
Co-Founder and Program Coordinator of the Mekong Business Challenge

Stephen Paterson is the Co-Founder and Program Coordinator of the Mekong Business Challenge, which is an entrepreneurship program and competition involving universities from Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Yunnan Province, China.  The Mekong Challenge is conducted in partnership with the international consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

Stephen has been involved in entrepreneurship education in Cambodia and the ASEAN region for more than 10 years.  He currently serves as a Senior Advisor and Program Coordinator for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the National University of Management in Phnom Penh.  In addition to teaching several courses on entrepreneurship and innovation, Stephen also serves as the Coordinator for the BMC Startup Accelerator Program in Cambodia and is also actively involved in the  National Competition in Yangon, Myanmar.  

Stephen is a Canadian citizen and received his Master’s Degree from the University of Toronto, and his Bachelor’s Degree from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

More than 10 years of experience in PR , brand management and marketing communication, including strategy planning and campaigns executions to stand out in the market and bring outstanding financial results. Experience in banking, telecommunication and FinTech industries, as well as consulting for a number of startups in various fields.

Glenn Miller
Consultant - Banking and Telecoms industries

Glenn Miller has been working In the Cambodian IT industry for 10 years and has worked as the Head of IT at ANZ Royal, CIO at EZECOM, CTO at WING and is currently working as a consultant to the Banking and Telecoms industries. Glenn is passionate about people and technology and the startup scene in Cambodia.

Chea Kagnarith is a co-founder of Edemy, a social enterprise with a vision to make quality English education accessible to all. He has graduated with a master degree in English teaching from Arizona State University and has been working in the field of English language teaching for more than 12 years including teaching, managing an English language school, and managing an English teaching publication. 

Chhunny NOEM
CEO & Founder - Anakot Asia

Chhunny NOEM has over ten years of experience in leadership, public speaking, training and motivational speaking. He was the co-founder of Smallworld Cambodia, and a former Co-Director of Possibilities World a training company delivering Leadership Development. Chhunny has also been a training Coordinator for Cambodia to a+b=3, a company that brings Financial Education to low-income individuals, families, schools and communities. Chhunny taught meditation at the International Meditation Center of Chiang Mai for several years, incorporating the tenets of leadership and meditation as a guide for people on their quest towards effective self-empowerment, self-belief, and determination, and equipping them with the tools to create safe environments around them while committing to their life’s passion. Currently, he is a lead trainer at Impact Hub Phnom Penh and a founding director of Anakot Asia, a social enterprise that catalyzes the potential in human transformation and development through innovative training solutions.

Rithy Thul
Promoter at SmallWorld, Codingate, Toursanak, ArrowDot

Rithy Thul is passionate about promoting small business start-ups in Cambodia. Since 2008 he has personally started, cofounded, or provided assistance with the startup of over 50 different small business ventures in Cambodia. With a focus on seeing more small business start-up success in his country, he cofounded SmallWorld Cambodia, Toursanak Adventures and Codingate. In addition, Rithy is the founder of Amoogli, a web publishing and development service, providing a unique, streamlined communications platform for businesses, startups, and serious young bloggers. His hand-picked team of Amoogli technicians are fast establishing themselves as early adopters, exploring and developing emerging technology applications, such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies, the Internet of things, as well as data collection and analysis.

Dennis Ichikawa
Co-Founder of Employment Services Cambodia

Dennis moved from the USA to Phnom Penh just over 3 years ago. Prior to this move Dennis directed a large education program in Phoenix, Arizona and also directed the Arizona offices of a large foundation. Dennis is originally from Seattle, Washington where he worked as a trial lawyer, pro tem court commissioner, and adjunct law professor. Dennis is glad to be in Cambodia where there is unlimited opportunity for innovation and for stretching oneself in terms of creativity and innovation in career. Nearly 3 years ago, with a Khmer friend, Dennis founded Employment Services Cambodia. Dennis has also worked with an international school in Cambodia developing college and business partnerships; and establishing an association of parents to be more highly engaged in supporting their child’s education. Dennis is currently a faculty member at the American University of Phnom Penh where he teaches law and ethics courses. Dennis has a passion for athletics (skiing, tennis, squash, and cycling).

Monirath Siv
CEO & Co-Founder - Teach for Cambodia

Monirath Siv is CEO and Co­Founder of Teach For Cambodia, a nonprofit organization that is cultivating the nation’s future leaders to ensure that all children can realize their true potential. Monirath began his career in education with Teach For America in 2012 and taught for two years as a science teacher in USA. He then served as an adjunct faculty at the American University of Phnom Penh. Monirath was featured as one of the ‘Bright Young Sparks’ by ASEAN Forum in 2016. He was also named the California’s New Century Scholar by the Coco­Cola Scholars Foundation and an All­USA Academic Team Member by USA Today. He holds a M.S.Ed in Urban Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis.

Sophorth Khuon
CEO and Co-Founder - Morakot Technology

Sophorth is now a CEO and co-founder of Morakot Technology after served as core-banking system consultant, woking for for VisionFund (Cambodia) for more than 10 years. He also used to work for World Vision International as technical specialist in banking applications. He originally joined VisionFund (Cambodia) as IT manager in 2005 after spending approximately five years of employment for several commercial and social enterprises.

Head of Offline Marketing Department - ABA Bank

A prolific and versatile marketing professional with more that 10 years combined experience in marketing communication, brand management & systems engineering. She has been in Cambodia for more thant 11 years and has worked with different industry segment, banking, tourism, advertising, food and beverage and manufacturing. She has adept knowledge in systems improvement, product design and full scale marketing activities.

Master Educator - Technovation Cambodia

Lydet is the Master Educator for a global tech entrepreneurship education and competition program for girls, Technovation Cambodia 2016 - 17. Additionally, he has also been through some hack-a-thon competitions related to education and business model both in local and international as well. Lydet was a Partnership and ICT Specialist for USAID’s technology project; and he is, currently, a policy research consultant for an institution. Lydet likes self-learning, curiosity, trying and test new concept or idea.

Piseth Kheng
Executive Director - Open Institute

Mr. Piseth Kheng has been working over 11 years in technology and education for development with the Open Institute organization, reaching the position of Executive Director. He has 9 years of experiences working with many projects that collaborates with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to improve quality of education through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), helped prepare the Master Plan for ICT in Education, and he has participated in writing the ICT curricula and official textbooks for the Ministry of Education. As part of his work, he interacts with several Free and Open Source software projects around the world.

Akira Morita
Founder - Design Kompany

Akira Morita is 1/2 of Design Kompany, a roving design consultancy with clients in North America, Europe and Asia. DK has helped hundreds of fellow small businesses and organizations find their soul and express it fully—architects in need of words and pictures that uniquely express their life and business philosophies, software engineers needing creative help in development of a gamified mHealth mobile app., a startup icecream shop wanting to make a splash. He is passionate about helping organizations adopt design as a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving, and is a starting member of Design Phnom Penh, a local initiative of Cambodia's design curious and practitioners.

He is currently on hand as a resident innovation design consultant at Development Innovations, a USAID-funded initiative aimed to promote and nurture innovative culture in the field of social change in Cambodia.

Pongsa Metrey Sok
Project Manager at Nokor Group

SOK Pongsametrey is a projects manager at Nokor Group and has experienced engineering and software development since 2003 and he is working with customers in local and Europe. Pongsametrey earns M.S degree in information technology and engineering from the Royal University of Phnom Penh. His expertise is in managing and leading team of developers of software products in the area of financing, loaning, CRM, ERP & related, informative applications development. He is sort of man who participates and passionate with community associated instruction, research and IT.

He is a part of Khmer Natural Language Processing ( and an advisor of Barcamp Cambodia.

Mike Michalec
International Development Technical Consultant

Mike Michalec is an international development consultant for multilateral and bilateral organizations specializing in education and technology initiatives. He is also the co-founder and director of EdTech Asia, a community platform for education entrepreneurs that serves to provide a more collaborative and cohesive edtech ecosystem throughout Asia.

Moygach Eng

Gach is a Co-founder of Niron Event Planning and the coordinator of National Business Plan Competition. She is the outstanding student who recently graduated in Bachelor of Entrepreneurship from National University of Management. Beside her academic background, she is the former silver medal in National Business Competition in 2015 and continue the competition in the International Business Competition in United State in 2015 with the result “Honorable Mention”.

Yekleang Dy

Yekleang is in her fourth year majoring in Information Technology at Royal University of Phnom Penh. She has a passion in Technology and wants to get a job related to the technology field. Along with this, she is also interested in starting up her own business. Now, she is working with Kotra, a Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, on her flower garden business idea. She is currently staying in the Harpswell Foundation, a leadership training center which aims to empower a new generation of woman leaders in Cambodia. Throughout her time at Harpswell, Yekleang has accessed to lot of leadership classes conducted by well-know speakers around Cambodia. She has also taken extra core curriculum classes, which adds on to her university courses. Due to her achievements and commitment at Harpswell, she has been chosen to be a team leader in the dorm, helping to organize responsibilities and activities for her peers.
