Youth! Ever wondered what it's like to be your own boss? Create something new?

Here's your chance to experience 54 hours of entrepreneurial innovation as you transform your ideas into reality. Form a team with complimentary skills, passion, and commitment and build a prototype in one weekend. Design, test, and receive coaching from experienced designers, business mentors, and industry professionals, and win prizes that will help take your idea to the next level!

Startup Weekend EDU YYC features two tracks to choose from. Select the track that motivates you!
  • Edu Track: Got an idea that will make a difference in how people learn? The edu track brings together educators, technologists, designers, and business professionals who are passionate about learning. In 54 hours, you'll pitch ideas (optional), form teams, test prototypes, and prep for your time in the spotlight. You'll come away with a deep understanding of how entrepreneurial thinking can be applied in and out of your learning environment to develop solutions to an array of challenges in schools, training, learning, services, educational tech, and beyond. No experience necessary--all you need is an interest in educational ideas!  
  • Youth Track: Ever wondered what it's like to bring an idea to life and make it happen? Want to try it out and learn from people who have done it? If you're in grades 9-12, come and experience what it's like to pitch an idea, form a team, validate, design, prototype, and present in front of a panel of judges. You'll receive coaching and mentorship from innovative entrepreneurs, technologists, designers, developers, and business professionals throughout the weekend. Experience 54 hours of action, collaboration, and entrepreneurial thinking to bring your ideas to life. No experience necessary--just bring your energy and enthusiasm!

  • Kick-off speaker Rami Ghanem, a grade 11 student entrepreneur who has appeared on CBC's Dragon's Den
  • Opening speaker Chett Machett, Innovation Consultant, The Emerge Group at ATB Financial 
  • Coach Justin Wilcox, Founder of, based in San Francisco
  • 90-minute hands-on concept validation workshop facilitated by Dylan Roth, Director of Innovation, The Emerge Group at ATB Financial

Rami Ghanem
Founder, Curato Technologies

Rami is a 17 year old founder with two companies under his belt. He's been personally recognized by Kevin O'Leary and has pitched on Dragons' Den for Curato Clock, an employee time clock for the iPad. His second company, Grove, is an innovative bluetooth audio startup based in Calgary.

Dylan Roth
Director of Innovation, The Emerge Group, ATB Financial

Dylan is passionate about taking new approaches to solve customer problems and creating value for ATB. For example, Dylan and team are developing digital tools to help customers save more and manage their spending, while increasing deposits and cross-sell opportunities for ATB. Prior to joining ATB, Dylan held a number of leadership roles in direct marketing, market research, sales development, IT, revenue management and analytics in telecommunications, destination resort management, and management consulting. Outside of ATB, Dylan is active with the United Way of Calgary and Area where he chairs a team tasked with helping low income Calgarians access mainstream banking services – the team launched in December 2013. Dylan has a MSc Business from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University.

Chett Matchett
Innovation Consultant, The Emerge Group, ATB Financial

Chett is driven by her innate curiosity of the unknown, and uses that to explore, conceive, and launch/manage/test new business models for ATB Financial. Her mind gets most excited when strategy, connection(s), and creativity is complemented with action, execution, precision, and partnerships. In her previous life, she had the opportunity to work with a team that built, launched, and sold start-ups in various industries including: Space and Science, Non-profit, Auto-motive, Venture Capital, Venture Creation, Strategic Planning, and Image Recognition.

Christina Greenway
Coach & Consultant

Prior to Facebook, there existed something called the internet. Even before that, new industries were born online, a significant one being Virtual Assistants. Riding the waves of the web, Christina stayed up-to-speed working with coaches and entrepreneurs to develop their businesses online and off. From quarter million dollar transmedia projects to technology companies launching on the TSX for 27+ million dollars, Christina has been involved with cutting edge technology spanning across a myriad of industries. She works with passionate entrepreneurs who want to make a difference in your world. Currently Christina is enjoying country living, operating her business and life from a spectacular historical Springbank acreage which also hosts private events, workshops and retreats.

Brant is an educational technology leader with rich experiences across K-12 education. During the days/evenings he is a Director with the CBE. During nights/weekends he is the Co-founder and CEO of SchoolSoft Technologies Inc., which provides a web-based solution for managing parent-teacher conferences used by hundreds of schools in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

Robin Winsor
President and CEO, Cybera

Robin is a technology leader and entrepreneur who has led several organizations from start-up and growth to international success. Before joining Cybera as President and CEO in 2010, Robin invented and developed the world’s first direct digital x-ray system. He is a past recipient of a Manning Innovation Award, the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding service to Canada.

Cassy Weber
CEO, MindFuel

Cassy Weber has a passion for tech-based product innovation and market development.  She is a respected leader with  20+ years in the high-tech space in operations, product development and innovation, and sales and marketing.  She has been an advisor to industry groups in Alberta and the U.S. and has held senior roles in start-ups such as  Cell-Loc, Quick Link Communications, and KnowledgeWhere.  As a science literacy leader she is fuelled by a deep interest in both science and enterprise and brings her commitment to innovation in her role as CEO at MindFuel.

David Lloyd
Co-CEO, FREDsense Technologies


David has a rich experience in technology development in the realm of bioengineering and synthetic biology. With his start-up FREDsense, David has experienced product development first hand and the skill sets required to design, validate, and implement a business model. He acts as a scientific and project management consultant, as well as an educator to young minds.

Jason Orbaugh
Founder, Taught It

Jason is a startup consultant and former secondary science teacher. Jason is also the founder of Taught It, a social file sharing application for teachers, and AskEducators, a market research service for EdTech companies and entrepreneurs seeking timely feedback from the K-12 community.

Beaumie Kim
Associate Professor, University of Calgary

Beaumie is an associate professor of Learning Sciences at the University of Calgary. She is interested in designing technologies to make learning fun and engaging. She has collaborated with various people interested in similar efforts including NASA scientists, paleontologists, school teachers and students, computer scientists, and graphic designers. Her current interest is designing games for learning.

Margaret Glover-Campbell
Director of Programs, MindFuel

A self-confessed 'technology-geek,' Margaret has connected innovative products with like-minds and markets for over 20 years. Margaret parlays her program development experience and trademark enthusiasm into strategies that propel products into market. She has an exceptional understanding of launching and growing global products, in many instances, contributing to the definition of the industry itself.

Ryan Clements
Author and Entrepreneur

A former lawyer, Ryan left law to pursue his entrepreneurial passions. Now a full-time entrepreneur and writer, Ryan has published a book on entrepreneurial mindset and career planning, and is a popular freelance writer, blogger, consultant and public speaker in the areas of entrepreneurialism, marketing, and career planning.

Rachelle Prud’Homme
Educator & Learning Architect

Rachelle currently is working for Alberta Education in the Learning and Technology Resources Sector. She recently worked with Palliser Regional Schools as a K-12 Vice Principal leading technology and inclusive education initiatives, working in a design-focused school in Calgary leading gr. 7-12 innovative programming, and has worked in private, public and charter schools in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Japan.

Christopher Yeung

Jordan A. Boyd is the community manager at Rare communications, a local Calgary marketing agency. With over 5 years of community management experience and having worked at Hootsuite, Jordan is a leader in the community management space. Currently pursuing his BA in Law and Society at the University of Calgary, Jordan is director of the PUSH Network which offers students mentorship and resources to become successful entrepreneurs. Kylie Woods
Founder, Chic Geek

Kylie is passionate about technology, entrepreneurship and community building. She’s the founder of Chic Geek, a Calgary-based non-profit building community for women at the intersection of technology and entrepreneurship. Through its mentorship program, technical workshops, speaker and networking events, Chic Geek helps women build their confidence learning new technology skills and profiles more women as leaders in the space. Ultimately, Chic Geek is working to increase diversity in technology.  Kylie was named Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine and has been profiled in Metro News as one of "Calgary Heroes." She has also been recognized as a "Need to Know" in Alberta Venture and profiled by the Mount Royal University Summit Magazine in their feature on Women in STEM. In 2016, Kylie represented Alberta in the prestigious International Visitors Leadership Program hosted by the US Department of State and was a voice for women in STEM on an international stage.
