In just 54 hours, you will experience the highs, lows, fun, and pressure that make up life at a startup. 

As you learn how to create a real company, you'll meet the very best mentors, investors, co-founders, and sponsors who are ready to help you get started.


Techstars Startup Weekend is a 54-hour programme from Friday night to Sunday morning that brings together designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all domains to do amazing things.

Together we help accelerate the pace of innovation by strengthening the path for entrepreneurs, providing support for entrepreneurial communities, and helping to grow the worldwide entrepreneurial ecosystem.


Friday September 8th

Arrive at the venue and get checked in

Eat food, share ideas, practice pitches, get to know fellow participants

Welcome & Speakers
Review agenda for the weekend and introduce speakers, coaches, and community leaders

Pitches Start
Optionally line up to give your pitch

Attendees vote for the top pitches

Form Teams
Teams start forming and discussing ideas

9:00 pm
Begin Work
Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Dan Erikson
COO of Lightship Works

Dan has a unique combination of technical skills (database design, GIS, software development, and big data analysis) combined with operational experience in both emergency management and resource extraction. This combination allows him to connect business needs to new technology in a powerful and practical way.

Michelle Broadway
CPA and Manager, KPMG

Michelle has over 9 years experience in public practice experience in accounting and tax. Michelle is a strong supporter and advocate for the local technology sector

Pat Davis

Senior technology leader and practical strategist. Experienced in business transformation, strategy development, large scale system implementation, and corporate change management.

Judith Chomitz
MSc Lecturer, TRU

Experienced Instructor with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Strong educationprofessional skilled in Student Recruiting, Hotel Management, Entrepreneurship, Lecturing, and Sales Management.

Aleece Laird
Engagement and Marketing Specialist, Amplify Consulting

Former director of the BC Chamber of Commerce and current engagement and marketing specialist. Aleece helps business grow through marketing and engagement consulting at Amplify Consulting.

Coaches and Mentors

Jonathan Natavio

Jonathan is the winner of the Built In Kamloops Contest. He founded Porter which is a full-service platform that connects vetted and qualified service providers to businesses & corporate offices looking for a trusted, secure, one-stop shop solution for their business labour needs.

Doug McLean

Doug McLean has over 15 years experience working in Web Development serving in a variety of roles including Code Development, Server Maintenance, Client Relations, and Business Administration. Doug received his Masters of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Calgary; he also holds degrees in Human Resource Management, Ethics and Philosophy.

Lian Dumouchel
Chair, Tourism Management Department - TRU

Lian Dumouchel has been a faculty member at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) since 1994 and taken on a variety of roles including Program Coordinator, Chair, and International Academic Coordinator in the Tourism Management Department. She received a Teaching Excellence Award in 2010 and has extensive experience in curriculum development and international initiatives. 

Lian has taught in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, new product development and marketing. Her research interests include curriculum development, high impact and experiential learning, internationalizing higher education, entrepreneurship, innovation, knowledge management and product development within small firms.

Before joining TRU, Lian owned and operated a small business consulting firm in Montreal, where for nine years she served clients from such diverse sectors as hospitality and tourism, manufacturing, telecommunications, and retail.

Lian holds a MBA in Small Business Management from McGill University and a BCom in Accounting and Marketing from Concordia University.

Jaymes Bearden
Software Developer

After graduating from Thompson Rivers University in 2010 with a Bachelors Degree in Computing Science, Jaymes has spent the following years working in Kamloops directing business technology decisions as a Technical Lead. Jaymes has a diverse breadth of knowledge gained through over 15 years of professional experience with work ranging from web development, embedded systems, server architecture, networking and distributed cloud based applications.

He is currently working as the Technical Lead for Lightship Works for the last two and a half years.

Jenn Mackie
Software Developer

Jenn graduated from Thompson Rivers University in 2016 with a Bachelors Degree in Science with a Major in Computing Science. She has spent the last year working as a Software Developer for Lightship Works

David Carter

David has a diverse background in the tourism and business industries, including consulting for large corporations and organizations across North America and South America. He previously worked for IMG, a global leader in entertainment, fashion and sports located in the San Francisco area. He currently teaches lower level and upper level marketing and business development courses at Thompson Rivers University. Fun fact, David loves dogs. 

Krishna Lakkineni

ENTREPRUNEUR, technology enthusiast with a passion for digital marketing. Love to surf the digital oceans with great skill and agility, digital marketing knowledge and years of experience is definitely on my side!

Peter Larose

Peter is the principal consultant of Larose Research and Strategy, where he provides consulting services to organizations in the public, not-for-profit, and private sectors, specializing in the following areas:  
- Quantitative & qualitative research, including survey development 
- Facilitation and strategic planning 
- Project management 
- Policy analysis and government relations 
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Sectoral and thematic areas of specialization include tourism and hospitality, community economic development, commercial & public recreation, land use, education, and international relations.
Peter has taught at the University of British Columbia and currently teaches at Thompson Rivers University in upper level planning and tourism courses. 

Cristina Esposto
Director of Sales

After moving from Hamilton, Ont to Vancouver, Cristina made her way to Kamloops, BC where she has called home for the last 15 years. She is a wife and a mother of 2 young boys -along with a new puppy named Lucy. She is a volunteer for KidSport Kamloops and sits on the board as the Marketing and Sponsorship coordinator. 

An ‘intrepreneur’ in her own right, Cristina became a Regional Digital Marketing Strategist for RTOWN in 2014. In her time with RTOWN she has helped over 200 local clients get the tools they need such as social media and website SEO to strengthen their online presence. She is Director of Sales for RTOWN leading a sales team of 9 throughout BC and Alberta. 

RTOWN is a BC based Digital Marketing company whose focus is helping small business succeed by giving them access to tools generally available to only large companies. Cristina’s passion for helping local businesses get stronger is tied to her love for her community, her Italian roots and her zest for living an amazing life. 

Jayne Rossworn

Jayne provides legal services for new and growing businesses, including corporate and partnership formation, commercial contract drafting and review, and general in-house services.

Steve Henderson
Senior Software Developer

Steve is a prolific Startup Weekend attendee (4 or 5 events). He spent four and a half years as a Lead Client Developer at FreshGrade and now works as a Senior Software Developer at Netflix in San Jose.
