Hacking for Humanity

On October 24th to 26th, we are assembling the most talented entrepreneurial-minded women and men for a very special edition of Startup Weekend.
This edition will be focused on leveraging talent and technology for a social good with a particular spin: bridging the gender gap in the tech space by getting more women involved in tech entrepreneurship.

Numerous community organizations and groups will come together, coupled with the innovators, doers, and all-around big-thinkers in the startup community. We provide the working space, brain fuel, food, mentors, new friends and inspiring speakers and judges. You supply the energy and innovation to build something big over the weekend. Join us in coding and creating for a cause!

Friday, Oct 24th
Opening panel with inspiring and successful entrepreneurs followed by 1-minute pitches that facilitate the formation of small teams around the best, most viable tech concepts with a social application. Community organizers validate ideas, then all attendees vote. We hope you’ll pitch, but it’s not required!

Saturday & Sunday, Oct 25-26th
Work days! Teams focus on user research, customer development, validating their ideas and building prototypes with the help of experienced coaches from the entrepreneurial world. You’re welcome to stay and work as you’d like!

Sunday evening, Oct 26th
Teams demo their minimum viable products (MVPs) and receive valuable feedback from a panel of expert judges. Winning teams take home a grab bag of great tools to help launch their company!

Benefits of attending
  • + Delicious & healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole weekend
  • + A free .co domain name
  • + $2,000 of credit on Google App Engine

Margarita Lafontaine
President & Editor Premières en Affaires

Seven years ago, tired of hearing that there were no women available for leadership roles in the business community, Margarita decided it was time to give a voice and a face to women in business.
She created the magazine Premières en affaires.
Premières en affaires has successfully brought together Montreal’s corporations to embrace and support the need to ‘see and hear’ all the women who are out there, juggling too many roles to tackle one more, that of being visible outside their own inner circle.

Jean-Sébastien Cournoyer
co-founder and Partner at Real Ventures

JS is a husband and father of five wonderful children. He co-founded Montreal Start Up and Real Ventures, two seed funds based in Montreal. JS loves working with entrepreneurs and startups. He is an entrepreneur as well, having co-founded and operated a few startups along the way. He tries to live life by giving more than he takes and looks for people who share this principle. JS' life is a constant (good) struggle to find balance between spending time with his wife and kids, with the entrepreneurs he works with, his friends and taking care of himself, which usually means playing hockey, swimming, running or biking. As such, he tends to work with people he enjoys spending time with.

Olivia Li
President, Founder @ Tabla9

Olivia Li is an entrepreneur, a geek and product enthusiast, who has been working with startups since 2005. She has a bachelors in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, and started her career as a software developer. Her transition into management came naturally, driven by a desire to find better ways to work with people, and her passion for building great tech-enabled experiences that stick in an ever-evolving and sometimes brittle world. Following fast successes at tech startups and many failures, occasionally dabbling in consulting/freelance work to develop her business acumen, Olivia returned to McGill-HEC in 2012 for a formal business education with the EMBA programme.

Today, she is an active in member of the startup community, contributing as mentor for FounderFuel, as curator of the Montreal Startup Digest and as a co-organizer of ProductHunt Montreal. Through her company, Tabla9, Olivia Li helps companies develop product strategies and practices that enable better innovation within a balanced and collaborative culture.
