Startup Weekend ?

Le Startup Weekend est une compétition entrepreneuriale où les participants ont 54h pour mettre en place un projet d’entreprise viable. Celui-ci est évalué ensuite par des professionnels de l’industrie.

Cet évènement, maintenant perçu comme un accélérateur de projets, vise à offrir aux participants une occasion d’apprentissage unique, se basant sur l’action, l’innovation et l’éducation.

Le Startup Weekend débute le vendredi soir, avec le « pitch fire » et se poursuit tout le long du week-end, pendant lequel les participants bâtissent leur projet, allant du plan d’affaires au prototype. L'évènement se termine le dimanche soir avec les présentations des projets à un jury de spécialistes et de professionnels.

Édition FinTech ?

La FinTech, aussi connue sous le nom des technologies financières, consiste à utiliser les TIC pour livrer des services financiers de qualité.

La FinTech a de bonnes chances de changer structurellement les institutions financières qu’on connait aujourd’hui. Montréal compte quelque cinquantaine d’entreprises de technologies financières et un grand marché reste à conquérir.

  • Avez-vous une idée d’affaire ou une solution technologique permettant de livrer de manière plus efficace des services financiers, bancaires, d’assurances, de conseils en gestion de patrimoine, de conseils d’investissement en ligne… ?

Startup Weekend ?

Startup Weekend is an entrepreneurial competition where participants have 54 hours to launch a viable business project which is then reviewed by industry professionals.

This event, now viewed as a projects accelerator, aims to offer participants a unique learning opportunity, based on action, innovation and education.

Startup Weekend starts on Friday evening, with the “pitch fire” and continues throughout the weekend, while participants build their projects, from business plan drafting to prototype conception. The event comes to an end on Sunday evening when the judges (experts and professionals) listen to the final presentations.

FinTech edition ? 

The FinTech, also known as financial technology, consists of using the ITC to deliver quality financial services. The FinTech has good chances of transforming the current structure of our financial institutions. The city of Montreal encompasses around 50 financial technology companies, and an important market remains untapped.

Julien Brault
Founder of Hardbacon

Julien Brault has been popularizing finance for years as a business reporter at Les Affaires prior to founding, Hardbacon a fintech startup whose goal is to make investment simple for everyone. He is an author and a bookworm: he founded a non-fiction publishing house which sold in 2010 for an undisclosed (read: very small) amount. When he’s not working to improve capitalism, he’s still working to improve capitalism.

Isaac Souweine
Entrepreneur in Residence at Real Ventures

Isaac is a product and marketing leader who is passionate about product development, company building and ecosystem creation. Currently an Entrepreneur in Residence at Real Ventures, he’s also held leadership roles at high growth startups like Flatbook (now Sonder) and Frank + Oak as well as large technology companies such as Yahoo and Scholastic. Isaac has an MBA from INSEAD and a BA from Columbia in religious studies. A dedicated mentor, public speaker, event organizer and connector, he strives to spread a pay-it-forward mentality to the companies and communities in which he works.

Jonathan Shaanan
CFO and Principal at Ferst Capital Partners

Jonathan is Chief Financial Officer and Principal of Ferst Capital Partners, an investment firm focused on early stage Fintech startups in Canada. Jonathan splits his time between managing Ferst Capital’s investment portfolio, leading due diligence efforts on new investments, and working with Ferst Capital’s studio companies to build out their platforms. As a result, Jonathan is in a unique position to understand the opportunities and challenges of FinTech in Canada from both the eyes of investors and entrepreneurs. Jonathan was most recently an Investment Banker with Rothschild in the NYC office, where he covered Mergers & Acquisitions across a wide range of industries. Prior to Rothschild, Jonathan graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce and a double-major in Finance and Math.

Christian Bélair
President and co-founder of Credo Productions

Christian was previously CEO of the Regroupement des jeunes chambres de commerce du Québec (RJCCQ). His project management experience spans ten years, including five in a senior position that involved managing both personnel and working with a Board of Directors. He holds a postgraduate diploma in Management from HEC Montreal, a certificate in leadership and management skills of the Institut de leadership en gestion (now affiliated with the John Molson School of Business) and a Bachelor degree in Philosophy from the University of Montreal.

Benoit Desgroseillers, EMBA, CRHA
Directeur à Finance Montréal

Benoit Desgroseillers est le directeur du développement des talents au sein de la grappe Finance Montréal. Il détient un MBA exécutif, est membre de l’ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines (CRHA). Il a auparavant été directeur général d’un centre de carrière universitaire et gestionnaire RH chez GE Capital. 

Jan Christopher Arp
Managing Partner

Jan is a fintech evangelist, passionate about improving society through finance and technology. He founded FormFintech that supports or has formed over 100 fintech startups. Prior to this, he worked as Head of Finance at District 3, helping 20 early stage teams raise more than $15 million, and was Head of Finance at, helping it from incorporation to Series A. He also worked as a consultant for billion dollar infrastructure projects on behalf of banks. He holds an MBA from HEC, a finance degree from Ottawa University, and passed II levels of the CFA.

Patrick Poirier
CTO of Artificial Intelligence at Existence

Patrick Poirier is a serial entrepreneur with expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, web services, and managing startups from A to Z. Patrick has studied in Management, Computer Science, Machine Learning, and Computational Finance. He has a strong international network mainly in Montreal, New York, and San Francisco. Patrick is the co-founder of Existence, his third company, which is in the process of building next-gen infrastructure and marketplace for the FinTech industry. He has raised more than $1.4M for one of his startups and has been through an accelerator program in New York.

Me Zineb Kouidri avocate est membre au comité Startup ainsi que membre au comité du Gala de la Relève d'affaires pour l'année 2018 au sein du Bureau de Direction du Regroupement des Jeunes Chambres de Commerce du Québec (RJCCQ).

Zineb est évaluatrice de projets à la Fondation Montréal inc. Zineb est aussi membre de plusieurs associations notamment la Jeune Chambre de commerce de Montréal et la Chambre de commerce et de l’industrie Thérèse-de Blainville.

Eytan Bensoussan
Co-Founder and CEO of Ferst Digital

Eytan is the Co-founder and CEO of Ferst Digital, a digital banking startup whose mission is to eliminate the pain SMBs experience when they bank and manage their finances. To achieve this, his team is building a fully-mobile, open (i.e., API), banking service designed around their needs. He will gladly talk to anybody about small businesses or banking for hours. Give it a try.

He was most recently an Engagement Manager with McKinsey where he had an incredible time working on customer-facing digital transformations in the financial services space. Prior to McKinsey, he worked in corporate law and television production and completed his law/MBA degrees at McGill University. He was called to the New York Bar in 2010. 

Philip Barrar
Founder and CEO of Mylo

Philip is the Founder and CEO of Mylo, one of Canada’s leading FinTech companies. Mylo is a free mobile application that automatically rounds up everyday purchases and invests the spare change so you can achieve your financial goals.

He is known as a serial entrepreneur with a strong interest in mobile. Philip has built mobile-first businesses in both the B2B mobile health and B2C e-commerce sectors. Now, Philip is focused on improving financial services in Canada. Working from the FCP Studio in Montreal, his goal is to help Canadians save money and achieve their financial goals. Philip is a John Molson School of Business alumni. 

Sam Kawtharani
Co-Founder of Seedlify

Sam Kawtharani is a FinTech entrepreneur and product manager with an extensive background in the marketplace lending industry. Over 5 years experience leading the definition, development and go to market strategy of innovative FinTech products and solutions in the payments and marketplace lending industry.

Co-Founder at Seedlify, the first Canadian Capital-as-a-Service provider of marketplace revenue based financing for early-stage growth businesses. 

Diana Cheptene
Senior Digital Strategy Consultant

Diana creates technology-powered experiences at the intersection of strategy, design, and technology. In her consulting work, she focusing on leveraging AI to help clients understand their customers, design compelling experiences and deliver them with agility. She engages executive teams across industries and domains to gain buy-in and re-align organizations with new ways of working.

Eric Chevrette

Marie Catherine Ducharme

Marie Catherine est stagiaire en droit. Avant de se joindre à Lavery, elle a travaillé à Paris chez l’un des leaders mondiaux du commerce électronique où elle conseillait les équipes responsables du site web transactionnel ainsi que dans un cabinet d’avocats américain où elle accompagnait les entreprises en matière de protection des renseignements personnels et de la vie privée.

Jean-Philippe Beaudet

Entrepreneur autodidacte et passionné, Jean-Philippe a contribué à la fondation de quatre entreprises en quatre ans. Présentement CTO et co-fondateur chez Existence, une infrastructure fintech pour la prochaine génération de services financiers.

Guillaume Synnott
Avocat, Lavery

Guillaume est membre du groupe de Droit des affaires chez Lavery. Il concentre sa pratique dans les domaines des valeurs mobilières, des fusions et acquisitions et du droit des sociétés. Guillaume est aussi activement impliqué au sein du Programme GO inc. et, à ce titre, il accompagne des entrepreneurs dans le démarrage de leur entreprise et les conseille sur leur structure corporative, leur financement et les enjeux stratégiques propres à leur industrie.

Michael Gord
Blockchain Developer at MLG Blockchain Consulting

Michael is a full stack developer and entrepreneur who is focused on building decentralized applications, using blockchains and smart contract technology. Michael is currently the Director of Operations at the Blockchain Education Network (BEN), a global network of regional blockchain hubs, and the Founder of MLG Blockchain Consulting, where he consults fintech startups and enterprises on their blockchain strategy. Michael is an alumni of Desautels, where he studied entrepreneurship, marketing and info systems, and founded the McGill Cryptocurrency Club and Bitcoin Canada.  

Anthony Guay
Co-founder & CTO at Retinad VR

Anthony has been loving technology since his earliest days. A natural leader, he has attempted many ventures; he won a major robotics competition at 16, researched in Nanoscience at McGill University at 17, and dropped out of Computer Engineering to launch his first (and profitable) technology company at 19. He also launched 3 startups before founding Retinad, a venture-backed Virtual Reality company. He believes combining technology and science in a business is the best way to drive forward human progress.

Stephanie Pataracchia
Project Manager | Innovation Consultant at Hacking Health

Stephanie is a community leader and serial hacker. She currently doubles as project manager and Montreal chapter leader at Hacking Health. She graduated from McGill University with a BSc in Computer Science in 2014. Last January, she was on the first place team for the Sustainable City edition of Startup Weekend and previously placed in a couple other hackathons. She can help you with your tech questions as well as give you tips on how to best spend the limited time that you have before you pitch to the judges.

Ghani Kolli
Founder & CEO | HumanYo+Impact

Ghani Kolli est un entrepreneur en série et un professionnel de la vente et marketing cumulant près d’une quinzaine d'années d’expérience principalement dans le secteur des Technologies de l'information. Il dispose d’un bagage en formation d’informatique ainsi qu’en gestion d’entreprise.

À Alger (Algérie), il co-fonda à 24 ans une startup de 3 personnes en TI pour devenir le partenaire exclusif du leader mondial en Technologie interactive, le canadien SMART Technologies (Calgary). En fin 2007 à Rabat (capitale du Royaume du Maroc) il ouvre une société-sœur pour conquérir ce marché pour les mêmes solutions technologiques. Les deux entreprises deviennent retables et à succès.

A 29 ans, il devient à la tête d’une filiale CEVITAL, le plus grand groupe industriel privé en Algérie et le 5ième en Afrique. Il avait une équipe d'une trentaine de collaborateurs répartis en six directions.

Il décide enfin de se lancer à 30 ans dans une carrière internationale (en 2011) pour relever de nouveaux challenges sous de nouveau cieux. Et c’est tout naturellement le Canada qui a retenu son choix vu la qualité de la relation qu'il nourrissait avec ce pays depuis plusieurs années tant sur le plan personnel que professionnel.

Après une expérience avec deux entreprises de Laval, en Février 2014, alors qu’il a acquis la connaissance qui lui fallait du monde des affaires à Montréal et étant bien intégré, son réseau de contacts d’affaire s’agrandissant, il décide de se (re)lancer à son compte pour réaliser ses propres idées. L’aventure entrepreneuriale de Ghani Kolli reprend alors de plus belle en créant Beyond Nova, une entreprise de TI tout en assurant des mandats spécifiques en consultation marketing, vente et en innovation d'Affaire à ses clients. 

Citoyen engagé dans sa communauté d’origine et d’accueil, il a à son actif plusieurs implications économiques et sociales.

Noor Bawab

Noor is a renaissance person, her interests are so diverse that you simply can’t put her in a box--whether it’s mathematics, business, anthropology, or languages. At the age of 12, she attempted her first try at entrepreneurship and has been passionate about entrepreneurship ever since. She believes in the power of technology and entrepreneurship in changing the world and in making an impact on the lives of millions of people, which is why she joined the founding team of District 3 in 2013. She has since helped in connecting District 3 to the Montreal ecosystem and helped it grow from an empty room to a vibrant ecosystem. She is currently the general manager at District 3.
