Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event that brings together Fredericton designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all domains to do amazing things. Learn more!
This time Startup Weekend won't just be about Fredericton but the whole world as being part of the Global Startup Battle.

Mike LeBlanc
President & CEO at Blue Spurs

Mike LeBlanc created Blue Spurs in 2012 to help companies accelerate reaching their business goals through the use of innovative technology solutions. Having been in the industry for over 20 years, he realized the potential of the Internet early on. Mike was one of the first Java Certified Developers in Canada and has been involved in Internet systems development since the early '90s having implemented dozens of mission critical web-based systems. 

Always both business and technology focused, he co-founded icGlobal in 1998. This was an award winning LMS provider. He sold it to SmartForce (Now Skillsoft) in 2001 which at the time was the largest eLearning provider in the world. He also co-founded Ensemble Collaboration which developed enterprise collaboration solutions which sold to Global Mentoring in 2006. Recently he led the technology division of Chalk Media and built a team of over 50 technology professionals. He also spearheaded the development of a mobile based content publishing platform. Chalk was sold to Research in Motion in 2009. While at RIM Mike led numerous product development teams across North America including BlackBerry App World, EBay, BlackBerry News, and Chalk Pushcast. He left in 2012 to start Blue Spurs. 

Mike and his team have a history of creating innovative solutions that are sought after in the market place. Blue Spurs focuses on using our skills, experience, and excellent customer service to deliver next generation solutions.

Susan Holt
President & CEO at New Brunswick Business Council

Susan Holt is the President and CEO of the New Brunswick Business Council.  Having joined the Council in August of 2011, she brings a diverse background and unique perspective to the organization. Raised in Fredericton, Susan's first jobs were scooping ice cream and ringing in groceries for local entrepreneur Richard Tingley and conducting environmental impact assessments on the Maritimes & Northeast pipeline project with the home-grown firm Washburn & Gillis. After completing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Economics at Queen's University, Susan went on to sales, human resources and management roles with some of the world's most successful firms: Xerox, Manpower, HP, Cognos (now IBM) and Research In Motion (now BlackBerry).Having spent nearly a decade working around the world, from Toronto and Ottawa to Australia and India, Susan returned to New Brunswick in 2007 and has been committed to the province’s growth ever since.  Recently serving as CEO of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, Susan is a tireless champion for entrepreneurs in our province.  Today, she leads 24 of New Brunswick’s foremost business leaders on the NB Business Council, working to make New Brunswick the best province to start and grow a company.Susan is a proud wife to Jon and mom to daughters Molly and Paige. 

George Tahan
MBA I Relationship Manager at TD Commercial Banking

George is a Relationship Manager for TD Commercial Banking in Fredericton NB.  In this role George manages business banking needs for over 65 Borrowing and 35 Deposit clients from Fredericton west to the NB /QC border. He is mainly responsible for business development and Commercial lending in the $1MM to $25MM space.George joined TD Bank Group in 2014 from Scotiabank Commercial Banking in Toronto where he had worked for four years as an analyst, risk manager, and a relationship manger. George spent most of his career in the Toronto working in various business development roles at Bell Canada, and Canada Post Corporation before starting his career in Banking in 2010 after completing his MBA at the University of Toronto.  George is originally from Fredericton, studied business/finance at the University of New Brunswick and was a member of the 2005 Student Investment Fund. 

Coaches and Mentors

Yan Simard

Yan Simard is the founder and CEO of Zaptap. He is a serial entrepreneur with experience in managing global technology operations and a leader with a strong track record in both sales and operations. Yan is a visionary with a taste for disrupting innovations.His experience in technology spans many industries from consulting, telecommunications, multimedia, video games, e-learning,retail, and in IT Management working for companies such as CGI, Bell Canada, Gameloft, NBCC, Industrial Alliance and Irving Oil. For the past several years Yan has led the program for client Bell Canada. He managed client relationships and supervised a team of 70 developers located in Toronto, Montreal and Bangalore.Yan graduated from Université Laval with an MBA in IT Management and a BAA in Information Systems. He also attended several technology and leadership classes and workshops, including the ‘Effective Leadership’ seminar from McGill. Yan spent most of his childhood in Quebec and now calls Fredericton, NB. home. He is the proud father of 4 children.

Jake Arsenault
CEO of The Black Arcs

Co-founder of The Black Arcs (TBA), as well as founder and former CEO of Inversa Systems Ltd, Jake has tremendous experience at breathing life into a startup.  Jake has been a self-employed entrepreneur since 2006, and is a member of the Order of the Wallace McCain Institute for Business Leadership.

With a background in mechanical engineering, and a PhD in gamma-ray imaging, Jake understands the challenges that come along with deep research. He also knows the challenges of the transition from research & development to commercialization.  Jake led Inversa Systems to develop the world’s first CAT scan system deployable in the field for the civil infrastructure and oil & gas markets, bringing cross-sectional inspection images to these industries.

In short, Jake understands both the art and science of a disruptive startup: from concept, private and public funding, research, development, commercialization, strategy, marketing, design and sales.  He is also passionate about helping the New Brunswick startup ecosystem thrive, serving as the Entrepreneur In Residence with the Technology Management and Entrepreneurship Program at UNB.

Nicole LeBlanc
Associate Director at Strategic Investments BDC

Nicole LeBlanc is an Associate Director with BDC Capital, and is responsible for managing the BDC convertible note program and associated investment portfolio. Prior to joining BDC Nicole was the Director of Finance at the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, making investments in early stage companies in NB. An active member of the Maritime startup community, Nicole also worked as an Investment Analyst with the First Angel Network and as a professional financial consultant with many IT and Medtech companies in Nova Scotia. Holding a CPA/CGA accounting designation, she began her career as a staff accountant and later Admin Controller at Ganong Bros. Ltd. in St Stephen. An active community supporter, Nicole has contributed as a high school soccer coach and held board positions with Soccer NB, the Literacy Coalition of NB and other non-profit organizations. 

Sean Greenlaw

Sean is a passionate, creative, and energetic local entrepreneur.  He was the founder and CEO of Lashpoint, a custom software development company that grew steadily until it caught the attention of Blue Spurs earlier this year.
Blue Spurs, acquired Lashpoint in June, as is a major software development and consulting company in the region, specializing in mobile and cloud application development.  Sean has kept the original Lashpoint team together as they transitioned to Blue Spurs, and now works to grow their business and deliver value to their customers.

Peter Clark
Vice President, Investments Atlantic Canada

Peter, having joined GrowthWorks Atlantic Ltd. in 2006 as the Regional Investment Manager for New Brunswick, now serves an expanded role within the investment team as Vice President Investments. He brings a depth of experience executing corporate development transactions and conducting financial planning and analysis. Prior to joining GrowthWorks, Peter held increasingly senior positions with large corporations (Teletech, TCI Communications) and start-up companies (Covad Communications, Barrett Xplore) in the United States and Canada.Peter is using his knowledge of leading investments, acquiring companies, and establishing joint ventures to help GrowthWorks Atlantic Venture Fund expand its investment portfolio throughout the Atlantic provinces.Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. In addition to his portfolio company responsibilities for the Atlantic Fund, Peter serves on the Board of Directors of Lymbix, MedRunner Health Solutions, Enovex Technologies, MultiCorpora, and Acentify. He is also Past-Chair of the Board of the Fredericton Community Foundation

Paul Simmonds
Founder of Robert Simmonds Clothing

Paul Simmonds has been in the retail clothing and footwear business for 35 years, all at the independent level. In 1998, Paul founded his own independent clothing business, Robert Simmonds Clothing, and has since expanded four times in different markets affiliated with the company’s core business. Paul was a past member of the Board of Directors of The Fredericton Community Foundation, which serves the greater Fredericton area. This Foundation has established a fund for emerging youth, to which Robert Simmonds Clothing donates a portion of annual sales. Additionally, Robert Simmonds Clothing is associated with many local charities, from supporting the homeless with an annual coat drive to helping other non-profit organizations.Paul has been a Retail Council of Canada member for twelve years and was previously a ten-year member in his last role as managing partner of an independent clothing store. He is current chair of the Canadian Independent retail committee and a current board member of the Retail Council of Canada.

Sean Dunbar
Owner of Northampton Brewing Company

Northampton Brewing Co. Ltd., located in Fredericton, is an award winning microbrewery, brewing specialty beers under the brand name Picaroons Traditional Ales.

The company won two gold medals and one silver medal at the 2005 Canadian Brewing Awards. Picaroons founder and brew-master, Sean Dunbar, is a true craftsman. He tests and finely adjusts his recipes and watches each batch carefully.Picaroons Brewery is one of only two microbreweries in Canada to use the traditional technique of open fermentation.

Sales of Picaroons beer are throughout New Brunswick in bars, restaurants and liquor stores; and is one the region's most beloved beverages.

Peter Goggin
CEO of Resson Aerospace

Peter Goggin is a passionate, budding entrepreneur who is motivated toward creating new business opportunities. Interests involve being active and experiencing new adventure. He is a member of the UNB Varsity Red's men's basketball team from 2010-2013.

Peter's Most recent endeavour is entrepreneurship. He has a strong background in management, marketing, and business development. Peter also participated in UNB's Activator Program to experience first-hand how to develop and launch a business, and is now applying this experience toward Resson Aerospace.

Lynda Savoie

Lynda Savoie is a senior level executive with 21 years of business experience and is currently the President and CEO of Aperture Capital Consulting, a Fredericton based consulting firm which works with entrepreneurs, established businesses and other organizations with planning and execution of term assignments in the following areas: part-time CFO services, administration of corporate finance projects, corporate governance, financial analysis & projections, business plan preparation, cash flow management, and other corporate services.
Prior to founding Aperture Capital Consulting in 2013, Lynda held various executive roles with Plazacorp Retail Properties Ltd. (now Plaza Retail Reit), a publicly traded retail real estate development company where she served as an instrumental force in taking the company public, was a key member of the team that raised over $130M in private placement offerings and where she developed systems to meet its continuous disclosure and corporate governance requirements. Lynda began her career with Grant Thornton and holds a CPA/CA designation and a BBA from the University of New Brunswick.
