Ari Kern
Regional Manager Southeast USA

Ari Kern is the Regional Manager for the Southeast USA for UP Global and Startup Weekend.  Ari offices out of Kansas City, MO at the Sprint Accelerator powered by Techstars.  UP Global is dedicated to empowering the entrepreneurial community and building networks that drive collaboration and strengthen entrepreneurs worldwide. With a platform offering action-based learning programs, resources, and networks for entrepreneurs and leaders, UP Global aims to be the leading organization strengthening/transforming communities through entrepreneurship.  Ari has facilitated Startup Weekends in the US and recently emceed the UP America Summit in Kansas City.  Ari has explored startup communities throughout her region and now internationally through her involvement in Startup Weekend St. John's.  She is passionate about supporting the individuals making change happen where they live!

Gary Dinn
PropelICT

Gary comes to Propel from a career covering more than 25 years of innovation, including the founding international companies, and managing research teams in new technology development.  He started his first company in 1985 as a newly minted professional engineer.  His experience includes being a founder of Rutter Inc, and serving on its board from its beginnings through listing on the TSX.  More recently he has served as VP of Technology Development for an oil & gas technology company with extensive VC backing.  Gary’s community related activities include serving as chair of the Ocean Tech Cluster (OceansAdvance) in St John’s, and serving on the board of the NL Research and Development Corp.  He has extensive experience in marketing internationally including such countries as Brazil, China and Australia, as well as Europe.  Gary looks forward to bringing his life experience to the task of helping startup companies in Atlantic Canada.

Erin Best
Lawyer and Trademark Agent

Erin is a lawyer and trademark agent in the St. John’s office of the top ranked regional law firm Cox & Palmer. Her practice involves commercial litigation and intellectual property.  She specializes in national and international trademark registrations, as well as IT licensing, broadcasting, copyright protection, film and entertainment, publishing and IP asset valuation.  Erin is the chair of the Canadian Bar Association NL IP section.  She recently presented on “User Rights in the Post-Secondary Educational Context” at the Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.  Erin was recently recognized for her work on the US$3.025bn acquisition of fibre-based telecommunications and technology services provider Columbus International Inc., by Cable & Wireless Communications PLC.  She is the NL rep for Cox & Palmer’s ALT program for start-ups which provides emerging companies with comprehensive and affordable legal advice and mentoring. Emerging companies who are accepted into the program have access to the firm’s multi-disciplinary legal team who are trained to address the unique legal issues that face start-ups. 


Kevin Harnum
Area Manager for Business Banking

Kevin Harnum is an Area Manager for Business Banking with TD Bank and has been with the organization for 17 years. He currently manages a group of Small Business Advisors in Newfoundland and New Brunswick. During the 17 years with the Bank Kevin has primarily worked in the Small Business segment helping businesses grow and expand by providing financial advice and services enabling the business owner to save time and money. Kevin has also been very active in the business community, in particular the professional segment, working with many dental professionals assisting them to start up their own new practice, purchase practices from existing owners or simply expand and grow their current practice. Kevin is active in community and is involved with the St. John’s Board of Trade, Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce and volunteers with various charities throughout the St. John’s metro area, specifically he currently Chairs the Board of Directors for Choices For Youth, a large non-profit providing programs for at-risk and homeless youth in the city.

Jeff Dawson
Vice President, PwC Corporate Finance

Jeff Dawson, MBA, CPA, CMA, Vice President, PWC Corporate Finance Inc. Jeff Dawson is a Vice President with PwC Corporate Finance Inc. and leads the Corporate Finance practice in Atlantic Canada. He focuses on mid-market divestiture and acquisition transactions, banking and capital advisory services as well as early stage private equity transactions. Jeff has a wide range of industry experience, however focuses on the renewable energy sector in Canada. Prior to his time at PwC Corporate Finance, Jeff worked in corporate banking with a Canadian chartered bank both in Ontario and Nova Scotia. He was also CEO of a private company in the seafood industry before returning to PwC.   Jeff holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) from Brock University, a Masters of Business Administration from Saint Mary’s University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Management Accountant.    


Nick Whelan

Nick is a lawyer, patent agent and Partner in the firm’s St. John’s office. As a corporate and business lawyer, Nick helps clients with mergers & acquisitions, intellectual property & technology law issues, and regulatory compliance. As a patent agent (Canada and the United States) and a professional engineer (Ontario and Newfoundland & Labrador), Nick drafts and prosecutes originating patent applications for electrical, mechanical and software related inventions. Nick is ranked in Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory and has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada for his practice in Information Technology and Intellectual Property law for the past three years. Nick obtained his law degree from McGill University in 2001, and is licensed to practice law in Ontario and New York State, in addition to Newfoundland and Labrador. Prior to studying law, Nick obtained his undergraduate and master’s degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering (control and communications) from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Prior to joining McInnes Cooper, Nick was an associate in the corporate mergers & acquisitions and technology law groups of a top tier Canadian law firm. Nick also worked at a boutique intellectual property and technology law firm in Toronto, from which he was seconded for over a year to a major telecommunications company. Nick also remains active outside of the practice as a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and Director and Corporate Secretary for the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (Canada).


Scott Oldford

It's not often you get a second chance. As a teen, Scott Oldford was a successful entrepreneur... until he wasn't. After selling everything that wasn't tied down-- including his watches and suits-- he invested in himself one last time and created INFINITUS. The gamble-- and second chance-- paid off. Scott is now passionately invested in helping bring together experts across the world combined with powerful strategy, marketing, execution, and technology. Other keywords that describe him? Entrepreneur, podcaster, adventurer, speaker, author and a steak lover. His vision for innovation combined with his worldview allows him to add a huge, unfair advantage to anyone he works with.


Blair Winsor
Assistant Professor, Entrepreneurship

Dr. Blair Winsor joined the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University in August 2013, having taught entrepreneurship, innovation management and small business management-related topics at Edinburgh Napier University in the United Kingdom (UK) for the past 11 years. In addition, to having been an angel investor and consultant to a variety of businesses in Canada and the UK, he has been part of the management team in a number of small businesses ranging from a family-owned corner store operation to a United States-based technology start-up.He completed a bachelor of arts in political science at Memorial, a bachelor of laws at the University of Ottawa, a master of business administration at the Luigi Bocconi Commercial University in Italy, and a doctor of philosophy at University of Warwick Business School in the UK. Dr. Winsor also has a diploma in French from the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi and a post-graduate certificate in teaching and learning in higher education from Edinburgh Napier University.

Jennifer Tipple is a marketing communications professional currently working in the media industry. A seasoned expat, she has lived in Caribbean, the Middle East, France and Singapore. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce (co-op) from Memorial University and an MBA from INSEAD, ranked 5th MBA program worldwide by the Financial Times. A proud Newfoundlander at heart, Jennifer recently relocated to her hometown of St. John's, where she works with many local businesses and actively supports local entrepreneurship. She is an alumna of Enactus Memorial, a member of Rotary After Hours Club, and a volunteer with Junior Achievement.

Carol Ann Garland

Carol-Ann Garland is a B. Comm graduate of Memorial University.  She graduated with a double major in IT and Marketing.  For the last 10 years she has owned and operated her own retail business and previous to that was a Senior Product Developer and Product Manager for Bell Aliant.  She is currently a Financial Planner with Sun Life Financial where her specialty is working with small and medium size businesses. 


Bernie Greene

Bernie Greene is the Director of the Newfoundland & Labrador New Venture Gateway (Gateway), an outreach initiative of Memorial University’s Faculty of Business Administration that provides mentoring & advisory, investment readiness and investor partnering services to assist innovative, high-growth firms to achieve their growth potential. Gateway works with clients – entrepreneurs committed to developing or expanding innovation-driven, industry-leading companies – to position them to attract and secure investment.
