Jane Gertner
Executive in Residence at ventureLAB

Jane is in constant pursuit of strategic and operational excellence to position her clients for maximum competitive advantage. She is a strong business generalist with hands on experience spanning from marketing/sales to executive management, raising capital and creating successful exits.

She initially trained at Unilever as a Global Marketer, launching and growing international brands in North America, and expanding successful Canadian products world-wide. As President of an operating division of George Weston Ltd, Jane executed a complete financial and operational turnaround, divesting the company at a significant multiple.

Jane is also a solid integrative thinker, and is able to draw upon her deep business experience and broad skill sets to assist clients in strengthening their value propositions, commercializing products, forging successful strategic partnerships, improving investment readiness, and enhancing shareholder value.Jane is the Managing Partner of an SME consultancy, and serves on the Advisory Boards of several high growth entrepreneurial ventures. She holds an MBA from the Rotman School of Management, and is Vice Chair of the school’s Alumni Board.

Suneet Tuli is the CEO and Founder of DataWind. Suneet is a civil engineer, who graduated from the University of Toronto.

DataWind’s product range includes the PocketSurfer smartphones, UbiSurfer netbooks and UbiSlate tablet devices. The company has a portfolio of 14 US and international patents for its Web Delivery Platform which serves as the basis for its product innovations. The company manufactures, markets and sells tablets branded as UbiSlate to consumers and called the Aakash (meaning ‘Sky’ in Hindi) to the Indian government.

Andrew Maxwell
Director Entrepreneurial Engineering at Lassonde School of Engineering

Dr. Andrew Maxwell received his Ph.D. in Management Science at the University of Waterloo in 2011, winning the Academy of Management’s Heizer Award. Prior to this he completed an MBA at London Business School, and a B.Sc. (Eng.) in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College London.

He has been Chief Innovation Officer at the Canadian Innovation Centre for the past ten years, developing and delivering innovative and entrepreneurial programs (such as VentureStart for FedDev/RIC and InnoGate for IRAP and the Innovators’ Alliance). In 2012, he was jointly appointed to the College of Engineering and the Fox School of Business at Temple University (Philadelphia), developing Masters programs in Engineering Management, and Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship. 

His research examines the behavioural aspects of technology innovation, specifically the formation of new business and entrepreneurial relationships. He is a subject matter expert for IRI (Washington) in the field of trust and innovation, and a field editor for the Journal of Business Venturing where he pioneers new approaches to translational research through multimedia. 

He has won several teaching awards, authored 5 refereed journal articles, numerous industry articles and spoken at global academic and industry conferences.

Dr. Samir
Economist

Dr. Samir Joshi, is a renowned economist and an expert in his fields of research focusing on Small and Medium Businesses, regional industrial development, financial institutions, gender economics, Canadian Economic issues and labour economics. He was Chairman of one of the prominent stock exchanges of India and was Professor of Business Economics at M.S. University of Baroda, India where he taught at Bachelor, Masters including Masters of Human Resources Management, Master of Business Administration and postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programs in various branches of Management. Dr. Joshi was awarded Graduate Award (1991-92) to pursue part of the PhD research at the University of Toronto, Faculty Research (1999-2000) and Faculty Enrichment (2006-2007) Awards for the post PhD research projects at the University of Toronto by the Government of Canada. 
Dr. Joshi holds a Masters degree in Economics from M.S. University, India and Ph.D. in Business and International Economics from M.S. University, India and University of Toronto, Canada. 


Abdullah Merei
Product Manager for Video Compression Products at Evertz Microsystems

Abdullah is currently a Product Manager for Video Compression Products at Evertz Microsystems. Mr. Merei has contributed to the design and development of many products for the TV Broadcast industry. 

While earning his Degree in Computer Engineering from York University, Mr. Merei was ranked #1 in Engineering and was awarded a gold medal from OSPE (Ontario Society of Professional Engineers) for being the engineering graduate with the highest GPA. Abdullah has since earned his MBA part-time at the Schulich School of Business specializing in Marketing and Strategic Management. 


Terry Sachlos

Dr. Terry Sachlos completed his doctorate in bone tissue engineering at the University of Oxford. His doctoral research resulted in the development of a novel 3D ink-jet printing technology for bone tissue engineering. During his postdoctoral tenure, he specialized in stem cells with Prof Bob Langer at MIT, Prof Debra Auguste at Harvard University and more recently with Prof Mick Bhatia at McMaster University. 

 A serial entrepreneur having co-founded several start-up companies, Terry’s current endeavour is as the CSO of Bikanta Corp – a company developing fluorescent nanodiamonds as next-generation medical imaging probes.

 To date, Terry has first-authored or co-authored 14 peer-reviewed articles and filed 8 patents applications, all in the area of regenerative medicine. As part of a $26M stem cell screening initiative at McMaster, Terry spearheaded the development of a novel stem cell screening 

platform which culminated in a 2012 first-authored publication in the top-tier journal, Cell.


Joseph Breitner
Founder/Owner of Breit Future Innovations

Joseph Breitner specializes in leading product developments; taking concepts through prototyping, design to full production/manufacturing. Drives “design for manufacturing” with "can do" attitude. Joseph is open minded, creative and a problem solver. Prior to opening his own consulting business, Joseph was the Engineering Director at GE Water & Process Technologies leading an international team of technical people in developing water filtration products. He received in 2012 GE’s Technology Award - Customer Value for the development of LEAPmbr. Joseph has a B.Sc. with honor degree in Mechanical Engineering and M.Sc. degree in Materials both from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel.


Kundan Joshi
CEO, TheAppLabb

Kundan Joshi is the Founder & CEO of TheAppLabb. TheAppLabb is leading product development firm that is focused on Strategy, Design & Development of Mobile Apps. With headquarters in Toronto, and global offices in New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne and India, TheAppLabb has created apps for high profile clients like Unilever, Rogers, Dell, Toronto International Film Festival, and several other leading enterprises & exciting start-ups. Kundan is also the Founder & CEO of StartupLabb, an accelerator for tech start-ups, through which he invests in several innovative, high potential start-ups. Kundan is also co-founder of Urbery, an on-demand crowd-sourced grocery delivery service. Kundan has a Software Engineering degree from Western University.


Chetan Lamba
Sr. Account Manager, TheAppLabb

Chetan Lamba is a Senior Advisor & Account Manager at TheAppLabb. In addition with his own first tech start-up product under development, Chetan heads the sales vertical and provides strategic thought leadership to the number of start-ups, SMEs and enterprises who are entering the mobile space. Chetan also spent a couple years with the tech giant, IBM and has exposure working with agile software dev companies for the total of 7+ years.


Vikram Chopra

“Customer always comes first” is Vikram’s motto. A true customer advocate and a serial entrepreneur, Vikram likens himself a Self-Unemployed Entrepreneur. Vikram began his career in sales within the technology sector, after completing his Bachelors of Economics degree from the University of Toronto. Keyur Modi

Keyur Modi is a Business Analyst at TheApplabb specializing in delivering mobile and web solutions. Keyur is a fluent communicator with strong investigation, problem-solving and decision-making skills, combined with a pragmatic approach and sound business acumen. He is highly accomplished with a verifiable track record in fields such as analysis and gathering, business process mapping and the development of prototypes.


Ashish Patel

He is a high-performing leader and entrepreneur with the strategic business, engineering, and team leadership skills that consistently generate revenue from technology innovation. He has an impressive 14-year track record for identifying new opportunities, applying business acumen, and engineering products from concept to commercialization; while building customer relationships with a passionate entrepreneurial spirit. Ayaz Khokhar

Mr. Khokhar possesses 19 years of North American and International global business development, due diligence and M&A experience in over $8 billion of projects in renewable energy, thermal power, offshore gas and LNG.   Since 2008, Mr. Khokhar has provided project origination, due diligence and business development, project management support for developers, investors, energy companies and EPC contractors with a key focus on alternative and renewable energy. He was responsible for originating and successful acquisition of 1.6 GW of renewable energy projects, while maintaining a pipeline of over 9GW of International projects.   Previously, Mr. Khokhar was responsible for Merger & Acquisitions of projects at Alcatel – Lucent in the US, Europe and APAC regions. Mr. Khokhar also lead the post merger integration of Lucent Technologies with Alcatel and was responsible for $810MM in synergy savings in 10 months. He also held the position of Country Business Manager for Lucent Canada where he was responsible for managing Lucent Canada’s Operations with an annual budget of $117MM and a turnover of $1.1B.   Prior to 2000, he held various technical and management positions at engineering and consulting firms in the US.  He successfully led various initiatives including an expansion of professional services of a US company into the Canadian market, a very successful initiative that generated $30MM in new business revenue.  Prior to that Mr. Khokhar managed the Korea wax project and its supply chain for Pratt and Whitney Engines, a highly complex and patented manufacturing process for compressor blades for aircraft engines, a $200MM project.   He spent the first five years of his career involved in various project execution functions and was involved in numerous cross border technical infrastructure projects in Canada and the US   Mr. Khokhar holds two undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering as well as a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management.   He also enjoys mentors and advises advising numerous startups at Innovation York, Venture Lab, and MaRS.


Pat Perdue

Pat Perdue has spent his professional career helping customers and brands fall in love.  Whether it was when he was in charge of brand experience at Tommy Hilfiger USA, or as senior vice president working with international cruise lines to help drive customer satisfaction, Pat has helped brands and customers remain connected and happy.  Prior to starting Socialicity Media nearly 5 years ago, Pat was at the advertising firm Draft FCB as brand experience consultant.  His experiences there prompted him to launch Socialicity Media.  Socialicity is a brand experience consulting firm that specializes in driving customer excitement by precise brand positioning, and flawless customer experience execution.


Nicholas Romanidis
Owner and Director of Triacolyte

Nicholas Romanidis is the Owner and Director of Triacolyte Business Solutions Inc., a company which specializes in custom software development and consultation services.  With 12 years experience as a Software Engineer, Nicholas has developed specialized software in various industries across Canada and the United States.  Nicholas is constantly expanding his knowledge in computer technology and enjoys working on unique projects.  Having been featured in a video which profiled leading software makers, he was recognized by Microsoft as an early adopter of their next wave of technology, and has previously been profiled in ‘Momentum’ magazine.


Reg Charney
Entrepreneur

Reg is an entrepreneur who has also been a marketeer, magazine columnist, consultant, and software engineer and designer.

He has created a number of software products and sold them the worldwide. In addition, he has also been a columnist for magazines such as Dr Dobbs Journal, Computer Language, and Linux Journal. While in Silicon Valley, Reg published a monthly news letter notable for its ability to predict employment trends three months in advance. He is a lifetime member of the ACCU (www.accu.org), the world's premier association for anyone interested in developing and improving their programming skills. While in Silicon Valley, Reg founded the ACCU's Silicon Valley Chapter and was its chairman for 5 years. Reg has also served as a marketing consultant to a number of Silicon Valley startups.

Giving back to the community is important. Reg was a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and was Chairman of the Working Group on Program Design Standards. the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). He is also a strong supporter of the Open Source movement, and Electronic Freedom Foundation. Part of Regs core values is his belief that open sharing and easy access to information and expertise is key to our creativity, success, and freedom.


Hal Swann

Hal began his career as an industrial designer. Initially, concerned with aesthetic design, his work progressed to mechanical and optical design, including patenting a laser measuring system. Continuing in automotive service equipment, Hal was recruited to a sales position, in which he took a product line from an installed base of two units, to become the most highly-respected system in Canada, and was named top sales manager in North America.Parallel to and supporting these successes, Hal became deeply involved in industry associations, contributing to building curriculum for technical skills advancement, and “train the trainer” programs.A brush with death saw Hal move more fully into photography (which he had used extensively in market development), virtual reality and film making technology. Rapid advancement led to consulting, specialized imaging and public speaking engagements for Apple, IBM, Kodak, Ontario Provincial Police, and other organizations.As VP Digital Media at ZoomAndGo, Hal spearheaded numerous unique initiatives, including an online video and photo administration system to interface with a vast database of places to stay, worldwide. The firm’s *Geospatial Engine is highly touted by Sabre Global Distribution System as an unsurpassed system for data visualization of accommodations around the world.Continuing with travel industry focus, Hal has filmed and produced materials for firms such as IBM Transportation Systems, Skyservice Business Aviation, AirSprint Private Aviation, and others.Hal was approached by EntreBahn to film a piece for their WizOf.biz product, and after some months of ongoing consultations, was excited to accept their offer to become Chief Operating Officer, in 2013.In Hal’s offline life, he has served on boards of a number of arts organizations and is directly involved in efforts to alleviate, and ultimately eliminate, homelessness.


Andrew Yang
Founder & CEO Venture for America

Andrew is the Founder and CEO of Venture for America, and has worked in startups and early-stage growth companies as a founder or executive for more than twelve years. He was the CEO and President of Manhattan GMAT, a test prep company that was acquired by the Washington Post/Kaplan in 2009. He has also served as the co-founder of an Internet company and an executive at a health care software startup. Andrew has been selected by the White House as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship and a Champion of Change for his work with Venture for America. He is the author of “Smart People Should Build Things,” published by Harper Business (excerpts here and at Amazon). He was named one of Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business,” and has appeared on CNBC, Morning Joe, Fox News, TIME, Techcrunch, the Wall St. Journal, and more.
