Startup Weekend, powered by Google for Entrepreneurs, is a 54-hour weekend entrepreneurial training program to form a team (Fri), work, learn, build a prototype (Sat), present your startup idea and network with entrepreneurs (Sun). As you learn how to CREATE A REAL THING & BUSINESS, you'll meet the very best mentors, investors, cofounders, and sponsors who are ready to help you get started. Q: May I join alone without a team?
A: Definitely yes! You will find a team and news friends who share the same mission at the first night!

Q: I don’t have an idea, can I join?
A: Of course. You will choose the team with idea that you want to work the first day.

Q: I am not interested in creating my own business. Should I join?
A: Startup Weekend is also a good learning experience for you to turn book-knowledge into a real thing. During this journey, you will learn how to apply your knowledge to the real world!

Q: I don’t have any knowledge about Health-care and Bio-tech. Should I join?
A: Don’t underestimate your talent! What you come across in your daily life might be relevant to this field as well. Most importantly, you can find teammates in the first day that could complement your inadequacy.

Prof. Gary Chen
Director at HKUST Entrepreneurship Center

Dr. S.-H. Gary Chan is currently Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong.  He is also the Director of Entrepreneurship Center, and Chair of the Committee on Entrepreneurship Education Program, Center for Education Innovation. Professor Chan has co-founded several startups deploying his research results.  Due to their innovations and commercial impacts, his projects have received local and international ICT awards (2012-2015). He is the recipient of Google Mobile 2014 Award (2010 and 2011) and Silver Award of Boeing Research and Technology (2009).  He has been a visiting professor and researcher in Microsoft Research (2000-11), Princeton University (2009), Stanford University (2008-09), and University of California at Davis (1998-1999).

Dr. Frank Filser
Director and Founder at Nexpaq

Dr. Frank Filser is an inventor who invents new products that never existed before and makes them reality. His inventions span across various fields among them ceramic teeth for dental technology and modular cases for smartphones and modular power banks for Internet of Things, smart homes and smart cities. 
Frank has resided in Hong Kong since 2008 where he started three companies and is currently serving as director and member of the board in Nexpack Limited and is engaged as consultant in Health Builder London Limited  at the Centre for Signal Therapy. Since 2012, he also serves as director at The Gifts of the First Fruit Foundation (United States), a non-profit organization.  
Frank has received numerous awards, among them is the prestigious “International Ceramics Prize” by the World Academy of Ceramics in 2004.  Frank graduated in design, mechanical, and production engineering from the Technical University Kaiserslautern (Germany) in 1992 and earned his PhD in materials science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in 2001.

Dr. Alex Kwong
Associate Director at HKUST Technology Transfer Center

Dr. Kwong completed his Ph.D. specialized in Biosensor and Bioelectronics with the support of Croucher Foundation Scholarship. He then started his career with MAXX Bioscience in 2000 to manage various biotechnology projects, acting as Senior Biotech Analyst before he left. He joined Tianda Pharmaceuticals in 2004 as the Project Manager in the R&D Dept, responsible for the monitoring of research collaborations with universities, hospitals and companies. After serving in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, he moved to the medical device manufacturing industry by joining Automatic Manufacturing Ltd. (AML) in 2005 as the Senior Biomedical Manager and Medu-Scientific Ltd. as V.P., Business Development. Meanwhile, he was also serving as the Executive Board Member in the Hong Kong Medical & Healthcare Device Industry Association in 2006-2007. In 2010, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as Development Manager in the Technology Transfer Center, particularly for the commercialization of traditional Chinese medicine, biotechnology, biomedical and pharmaceutical-related research projects.

Roy Yuen is one of the co-founders of Oursky, a HK-based app dev studio that helps startups turn their ideas into reality and contribute to open source developer project. With his strong technical background and management skills, he led different startup products to world-class level.

Tim Chan is founder of HelloReporter & HelloPR, leveraging technology to do PR for Startup & SME. Lucas Fong
Co-founder & CEO at Simplus

Lucas is the co-founder and CEO at Simplus, a HTML interpreter with a marketplace for SaaS and developers. Lucas started coding since 10 and familiar with over 10 coding languages. He has provided software development, system administration and security services over 8 years, and involved a lot of large scale projects for government, famous organizations and competition events. Lucas is also an active contributor for promoting information technology. Answers will never come if we don't ask questions. Asking "WHY" is always the key for becoming a wise.

Sean Leung
Co-founder & Chief Architect at Simplus

Sean is a Network Engineer, Front-end Developer and UI / UX Designer. Sean studied and worked in Information Technology field with around 5 years and specially focus on UX design of mobile & web application in the past one year. Until now, Sean created over hundred design works including graphic, logo, mobile and web interface design. One of the mobile application is awarded in Hackathon.I founded Simplus.IO with my college classmate, who share the same vision with me - provide better development experience to developer. That's why Simplus.IO is founded and empower HTML - the world simplest language as the medium to simplify the development process of integrating SaaS with user interface. As a Chief Customer Officer, I’m responsible to walk with customers, collect feedback and provide better user experience. As an UX designer, I love interact with people and try to find out people’s conceptual model.

Growth Hacker at Oursky

May Yeung is the growth hacker of Oursky. She has helped grow some developer tools such as MakeAppIcon, ShotBot and Skygear.

Wing Kwong
Patient Engagement & Access Manager at Pifzer

Kwong has been with the healthcare industry for 5 years and is currently with Pfizer Corporation as patient engagement & access manager. Prior to this role, she was the brand marketing manager for the Inflammation & Immunology therapeutic unit, taking care of both Hong Kong and Macau markets. Kwong joined healthcare as a public relations practitioner with Ogilvy & Mather, and moved on to the worldwide pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline. Kwong holds a Bachelor in Education Studies in the University of Exeter, UK, and a Masters in Integrated Communication Management with The Hong Kong Baptist University.

Cyrus Chan
Assistant Manager at HKSTP

Dr. Cyrus Chan is the assistant manager at Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP). After obtaining BSc in Biochemistry in CUHK, he spent six years as a postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State University and HKU, before joining the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) as a senior biomedical engineer. Throughout his career Dr. Chan published 18 research papers in international peer-reviewed journals with h-index 13, got 3 research grants (2 as principle investigator and 1 as co-investigator) and successfully filed one patent.

Kit Shum
Project Director at IceHealing Health&Pro

Miss Kit Shum is the project director of IceHealing Health and Pro Ltd. She is an expressive arts therapist-in-training, registered teacher, yoga teacher and hypnotherapist. She provides psychotherapy and training services to different organisations.

Patrick Lam
Diabetes scientist / Management consultant

Patrick is a diabetes scientist-turned-management consultant with over 10 years of translational drug discovery experience in metabolic disorders. He is author of 17 high-impact articles and a filed drug utility patent to the USPTO for one of his many innovations. He is recipient of over 20 national and international merit awards, including the prestigious CIHR national doctoral award and served as project lead for a social business challenge hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative. As a management consultant in Canada and Hong Kong, Patrick has been advising commercial, public, and institutional clients in strategy and operational excellence in Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences and Healthcare. He is a member of the British Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee.

Davie Chen
Strategy & Planning Manager at GSK

Prior joining GSK, Davie has obtained his PhD within the normal study period with 10 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, paper presentations, and invited keynote speaker in international optometric conferences, and fellowships awarded by AAOpt and BCLA. After graduated from his doctoral degree, he worked as an experienced marketer specialised in expert marketing and product management in both pharmaceutical and healthcare product in GSK and Bausch and Lomb respectively, and led the record breaking mega integration between GSK and Novartis in 2014, also similar integrations with Pfizer, Amgen, STADA and Stiefel business.

Ben Cheng
Co-founder of OurSky

Ben Cheng is a young entrepreneur in IT industry, Co-founder of Oursky, and Vice President of Internet Society Hong Kong. His award-winning team Oursky have launched a number of apps with over 3 Million downloads on both iOS and Android platforms. Their apps have also been featured as Best of the week / Best of 2013 by Apple, among other prestigious apps. Since 2008, Ben and his team create quality web and mobile apps for small businesses and consumer users through consultation, design and agile coding. They also develop in-house products such as,, with great passion. Ben have been actively engaged in various community / government organisations including Creative Commons Hong Kong and Elected Member of the Election Committee (IT sub-sector) of HKSAR. In addition, he is on a mission to help promote entrepreneurship in Hong Kong and share his startup experience with young adventurers.

Jack Kong

Mr. Kong graduated from Professional Accountancy, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and he is a chartered accountant of HKICPA. Before joining Hong Kong X, Mr. Kong worked in the Merger & Acquisition Department of E&Y, Sequoia Capital China and Investment Monitoring Department of Tencent. 

Dr. Jian Sun
Director of Internal Operations at Hong Kong X-Tech Startup Platform

Doctor of HKU (Computational Chemistry), Master and Bachelor of Nankai Univ., has extensive experience in computational chemistry/biology and material simulation.  Worked in HKU as a Research Officer and the Project Manager of Area of Excellence on “Theory, Modeling, and Simulation of Emerging Electronics” (funding: 150M HKD)

Felix Wong
Community Manager, Greater China at Techstars

Felix is a young entrepreneur, community builder and growth hacker in Hong Kong, Greater China and Asia Pacific. He is the Community Manager of Greater China at Techstars, a worldwide network that helps entrepreneurs succeed. Since 2015, he has facilitated over 50 Techstars Startup Programs regionally, including Startup Weekend, Startup Week, corporate innovation program and regional summit.

He started his career at Ricoh as a Data Scientist working with many multi-national companies in data strategy and digital transformation. As part of his startup passion, he co-founded and led 3 fast growing startups prior to joining Techstars. He co-founded Cloudbreakr aiming to bridge the gap between influencer marketing, data analytics, social media and advertising agencies. He also held position leading growth strategy at The Wave’s integrated startup platform in terms of growth marketing, user acquisition strategy and for-purpose event management. After that, he joined Abtitu as the Director of Growth leading product strategy, UI/ UX design and technical project implementation.

Felix graduated from The University of Bath in Mathematical Science and received a master degree in Marketing from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

He is deeply involved in helping both young founders and the startup community thrives. He always put forward new ideas if only more time to implement them. In his spare time he loves playing football, cooking pasta and transform his imaginations into reality by Lego.
