Get ready to make some change! This time we build startups around health & wellbeing!

Have you ever thought of a solution that would help millions of people live healthier, higher quality life? Or perhaps you have an idea how to improve the healthcare services or even create a new one? Now you have an excellent chance to make it happen! Come, pitch your idea, form a team and make a change!

Startup Weekend Vantaa: Health & Wellbeing is an event where multidisciplinary teams openly co-develop business ideas and solutions for products and services of the future health & wellbeing fields. Participants can pitch their own ideas or take one of the business/technology challenges provided by companies and develop it throughout the 2,5 day event into product or service prototypes, viable business models or other solutions, which are presented in public at the end of the event.

During the weekend YOU WILL:
  • Have a great chance to network and meet new people will similar interests as yours
  • Get coaching from the experienced entrepreneurs and industry professionals
  • Not need to bother about meals and other practicalities, just have your laptop
  • Have fun, we promise that! And the winners will be awarded!

Speakers


José Valanta

Currently I work as a Director of Economic Development in the City of Vantaa. I´m the leader of Business services –unit and also a member of the Executive Committee of the City. My responsibilities cover of the overall economical development of Vantaa, including corporate advisory services, development of tourism, the city's communications and marketing as well as the international affairs. 

I have wide experience in various public sector development and management tasks. I've also been a founder in several municipal companies and organizations, as well as being a member in various steering groups and a member of Board of Directors in many municipal companies. 

Formerly I worked as a Director of Development at the City of Lahti for five years. Before that I was a Sub-Regional Director of Lahti Region and Development Manager at Finnish Local and Regional Authorities.

Tapio Koivu

Tapio is currently the CEO of Heureka, the Finnish Science Center in Vantaa, (www.heureka.fi). Prior to this, he was the CEO of Makery, formerly Helsinki Business and Science Park Oy). Through the years up to now, Tapio has been active in a number of boards of start-ups (Solucel oy, Envault corp, Vergo Oy, Plexpress Oy, Zora Biosciences, Global Eco Solutions Oy), chair of an investment committee of a start-up fund (SeedCapII) and active in different business development functions (Venture Cup Foundation, board) as well. From 2011 to early 2013 he was director of Research Affairs at the University of Helsinki. His responsibilities covered research administration, innovation and research funding. Prior to this, he was Executive Vice President at Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) where he was responsible directly to the CEO of VTT for the commercialization of intellectual property and generation of new technology based start-ups. Tapio eld the position of Vice President and founder of VTT’s office in Silicon Valley and Research Fellow at Stanford from 2001 to 2004. Before moving to the U.S., he headed a division called Strategic Technology Development at the VTT Building and Transport with responsibilities covering industry collaboration and technology strategies for partnership level customers. He holds a Ph.D. in construction management from Tampere University of Technology, Finland, and M.Sc. in Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology.


Howard Rupprecht

Howard is currently Vice President of New Business Development at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. He is responsible for the commercialization of new technologies developed within VTT, which is done through spin-offs, licensing and contract research. Howard has more than 25 years of industrial experience, both technical and commercial. Prior to VTT, he was Director of Sales and Marketing for TherMark Corporation where he was instrumental in developing the company from an early-stage start-up to a profitable material supply and licensing business. He previously served as Executive Vice President of Marketing for OK International, a $100M manufacturer of consumables and capital equipment to the electronics assembly industry. He has also held a range of sales, marketing and business development positions in technology companies serving a sophisticated high-tech customer base. Howard holds degrees in mechanical engineering and business administration. Howard is originally from the United Kingdom, but has lived and worked out of Silicon Valley for 11 years. He has lived in Finland since 2011. Specialties: International Business Development, Product Management, Technology Commercialization, Sales Channel Management


Oppo Nyrövaara

All-around player with 15+ yrs. international experience in professional services, technology startups and digital/mobile/ICT industry. Specialized in startups and growth companies. Experienced entrepreneur, executive, accelerator and investor. Key expertise areas include business and organization strategy, management, innovation & development, new business design, acceleration and early stage investments. 


Will Cardwell
Partner, Courage Ventures

Currently, I am a lecturer on entrepreneurship and venture capital topics at Aalto University Executive Education, and Aalto School of Science (the Aalto Ventures Program). In addition, through Courage Ventures and NS Sports Management I serve as a mentor in several accelerators, and do some angel investing as well.

Formerly, I was in charge of coordinating Aalto University's strategic university partnerships, as well as being involved in teams that work with corporate partnerships. In 2010 I co-founded and ran the Aalto Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE), Aalto's tech transfer and spinout arm. Aalto is one of Finland's leading universities, and is the result of the 2010 merger of the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology, and Helsinki University of Arts and Design.

Before that, I ran Finland's largest Technology Incubator, Technopolis Ventures, with over 200 customers large and small around Finland as well as St, Petersburg and Estonia. I have spent over 15 years in the Finnish high-tech environment, as CEO of a startup (Valimo Wireless, sold to Gemalto in 2010, 3 years) venture capitalist (Eqvitec Partners, Conor Venture Partners, 7 years), investment banker (Robertson Stephens, 2 years), and researcher and lecturer (Aalto School of Economics, and Aalto University of Technology, 3 years).


Bruce Oreck

Bruce Oreck was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Finland on August 12, 2009. Ambassador Oreck has a diverse and encompassing background. Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Oreck also lived in New Orleans, Louisiana for many years and prior to moving to Helsinki, was a long time resident of Boulder, Colorado.

Ambassador Oreck obtained his Bachelor of Arts from The Johns Hopkins University, his Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University and his Masters of Law (Taxation) from New York University. Mr. Oreck practiced law for over 25 years representing many of the largest companies in the United States. He is the author of several books on taxation and has had a successful career as a speaker and lecturer on topics ranging from taxation to the process of creative thinking. In addition to his private legal practice, Ambassador Oreck served as General Counsel and Executive Vice President for his privately held family business, the Oreck Corporation, until the sale of that business in 2003.

In his capacity as a real estate developer, Ambassador Oreck worked for many years restoring and redeveloping historic properties. This work caused him and his wife to become more and more engaged in “green” building and ultimately focused on climate change and renewable/alternative energy. In 2003, Ambassador and Mrs. Oreck founded the Zero Carbon Initiative which is committed to implementing both experimental and off-the-shelf technologies in the built environment, not just to reduce but to offset greenhouse gas emissions.


Coaches and Mentors


Fabian Sepulveda

Fabian has over 15 years of working experience in Engineering, Management Consulting and Investment Banking with the likes of Lucent Technologies, A.T. Kearney, and JPMorgan in the US and UK. He is actively involved in Finland’s entrepreneurial ecosystem as a startup coach and Lean Launchpad trainer, and actively helps startups understand and execute Lean Launch and Customer Development. He also teaches Entrepreneurship at the Aalto University and other universities. Most recently, he co-founded eyescubed, a startup in automotive technology. Fabian has a BSc in Electrical Engineering, an MSc. in Finance and a PhD in International Business.


Ashwin Rajan

Ashwin helps startups with defining their value propositions and translating them into user experience. He's your go-to guy if you're trying to massage your user archetypes, feature detailing, product-market fit, competitor experience benchmarking, delivery of product/service experience through digital channels and other areas at the heart of the human-centered customer development process. Ash is design strategist and interaction/service designer with a blend of consulting, corporate and startup experience of over 12 years globally across Europe, Asia, Africa and the US. He has been with Fjord and Deloitte among others, and today relishes hard problems in health and wellness, big/open data, networked platforms and internet of things.


Kenneth Salonius
Go-to-market & Healthcare

Kenneth is a co-founder and Head of Operations at Vertical accelerator, the first health startup accelerator in the Nordics. He previously co-founded HealthSPA, the largest health & wellness ecosystem in Finland, through which he has helped over 250 health startup companies grow. Kenneth has a passion for exploring the unknown and building new and is inventor of several granted patents. He is actively involved in shaping the digitalization of healthcare.


Hani Tarabichi

Hani has 17 years experience of professional management career at Chaoui & Co. as a General Manager for its Paper and Board division. In 2000, Hani co-founded PlanIt Consulting where he consulted and trained extensively for the past 14 years. Hani trained and coached private companies and individuals on issues like Marketing, Sales and Sales Management, Customer Service, and Communication. He qualified professionally in 2003 to become a Certified Professional Trainer. In 2001, Hani Co-founded the Syrian Young Entrepreneurs Association where he served as Vice President for 2 terms. As of 2005, Hani started as an associate professor at the University of Kalamoon where he taught Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Leadership Management, Marketing Management, and Marketing Strategy courses. Hani has served as a judge and coach at Pitch It at Aalto Entrepreneurship Society. Also, he remotely coached teams during Startup Weekend Damascus, and he is mentoring teams in the Lean Lunch Pad course offered by Aalto Ventures Program.


Jaana Pylvänen
Innovation Director at Kora

Jaana's current role is an Innovation Director and head of Regus Kora operations in Finland, she is passionate about building enablers for growth companies to grow. Kora is working in university campus areas in order to bring together technology universities, corporates and startups. With global partners like EBAN we help companies to grow and research be more private funded in the future. She has Master of Econ. and had long career in Nokia Networks as recognized innovation driver and execution focused and independent global project leader in all the continents. Jaana also has an experience in running design oriented business for 5 years as an entrepreneur with 10 employees and 80 sales persons, with 900 kEUR sales on 2009 and passion for digital marketing.


Tuija Pulkkinen
Founder of Grownups for Startups

Tuija is the Founder of Grownups for Startups to connect experienced corporate background professionals with startup thinking and doing. She is also having a consultancy to help organisations and leaders to transform and ramp up into new ways of thinking and doing business and internationalization. Tuija has a strong track record of strategic and operational sales leadership projects with Nokia, having been a key member of pioneering teams to build company´s first infrastructure businesses in India and South East Asia. During her career she has lived and worked in the Nordics, Latin world, Eastern Europe and South Asia. Tuija is also a Founding Participant at THNK – the Amsterdam School of Creative Leadership. 


Anu Turpeinen

Anu currently works as a Nutrition manager in the R&D department of Valio Ltd, the leading dairy company in Finland. She is also the Program manager for the Mind and body program of the Salwe Health and wellbeing SHOK. The program aims at acquiring scientific knowledge, which will be utilized to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals through innovative products, services and practices. Main research themes focus on the areas of overweight, brain health and health management. Anu has a strong academic background, combined with experience in the food industry. She worked as a researcher at the University of Helsinki for about 10 years. During 2000-2002, she was a visiting fellow at Cornell University, USA and has also worked for the National Institute for Health and Wellfare. Since 2008, she has held different positions at Valio R&D.  Her research interests are related to the health effects of various bioactive components in milk. Anu has a PhD in nutrition and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Helsinki.


Mohamed Eldishnawy (Dish)
Profitable Business Model & Lean Product Development

Mohamed Eldishnawy (or known more as "Dish") is an experienced entrepreneur with professional work experience varying from tech industry, to social and humanitarian fields. A natural networker, and a proud philanthropist. Currently he functions as a Business Advisor for leading Nordic media company “ArcticStartup”. He is a partner as well in recently launched accelerator program Arcticblast.vc. His first entrepreneurial business was when he was 12 years old, and since then, he never stopped.


Aino Hanttu

Aino is currently working as a service designer at Futurice. She helps companies to define and transform their existing and new products and services into intuitive and beautiful digital services. Prior to Futurice Aino was the lead user experience designer for the consumer products at a San Francisco based healthcare start up BetterDoctor. The BetterDoctor iPhone application is awarded with first position at Slush conference in 2013. BetterDoctor has helped over a million people to find a good doctor. Before living in Northern California, Aino lived in Helsinki and Spain and worked at Fjord, amongst others, working on health trends and designing banking and telecom services.


Ekaterina Gianelli
Director at INVENTURE

Ekaterina is a Director at Inventure, a venture capital company in the Nordics & Baltics. Ekaterina focuses on early-stage investments, and works with the portfolio companies in digital sector, helping them define their value propositions and market their services. Prior to joining Inventure, Ekaterina has been holding various positions in innovative companies, including an e-commerce startup Kiosked and a service design consultancy Fjord. Her core experience is in service design, go-to-market, marketing and operational management.


Sébastien Gianelli

Sebastien Gianelli is the Co-founder of HealthSPA and Head of Operations at KoruLab. He facilitates co-operation between companies focusing on mHealth, eHealth and wearables. Previously Sebastien was leading operations and HR functions at Fjord, a service design consultancy creating digital services.
Sebastien has a strong enthusiasm for people, culture and start-ups. His ambition is to improve work environment, simplify processes and scale operations whilst putting team's interest at the fore. Sebastien enjoys coaching young and established start-ups on culture, business-plans, design, financing and networking.


Liisa Paavilainen
Business Model, Lean Startup, Value Proposition Development & Customer Segmentation

Liisa coaches startup teams as a business advisor in NewCo Helsinki Accelerator. Liisa is passionate for new business, technology & venturing. She is experienced international business development and operations professional: start-ups & corporate venturing, product marketing, go-to-market, business management & finance. Formerly she has worked over 15 years in various international business development roles in Nokia, Reuters and Sonera. She holds M.Sc. in engineering from Helsinki University of Technology and currently studying in Aalto University Executive Education MBA program (Finance & Entrepreneurship).


Henrik Ekman

Henrik Ekman comes from GE Healthcare Finland in Helsinki and works there as a Global Product Manager for high technology medical devices. He has been recently worked for new product concepts and innovations, wireless technologies, new clinical concepts and business development for new medical parameters for hospitals. He has 20+ year experience in medical industry starting from product development to global marketing and product concept creation. He has recently been working for creating the GE Healthcare start-up hot-spot called as Health Innovation Village in Helsinki. Henrik also gives lectures as a guest speaker about product concept creation e.g. in Aalto University and FIHTA for HealthTech Pro. Henrik holds M. Sc. in electrical engineering from Helsinki University of Technology. And if there is something specific to tell about him, he’s a passionate person for new innovation creation, brainstorming and coaching with the teams – inspiring approach to make things happen with the teams. Kimmo Uutela

Kimmo Uutela comes from GE Healthcare Finland in Helsinki and works there as a Principal Engineer. He has 20 year experience on developing healthcare technologies, especially clinical measurements of hospital patients and diagnostic brain imaging. He has been actively planning and managing research programs in SalWe Health and wellbeing SHOK. Kimmo holds PhD from Helsinki University of Technology. His current focus is to ascertain the relevancy of the alarms generated by the medical devices in the hospital.


Saara Laitinen

I am R&D Manager and Head of Research Laboratory, Cell and Tissue Therapies in Finnish Red Cross Blood Service.  I have an academic background in cell biology, adult stem cells and cell membrane lipidomics. My main tasks at the moment are management of Research Laboratory, being a principal investigator on platelets and stem cell projects with special interest areas on novel cellular nanoscale mechanisms that may have potential applications in therapy. I have experience on both academic and product development environments and have been the leader of the biomarker project: “Intelligent Marker Combinations for Stem Cell Functionality” that was part of SalWe IMO program coordinated by SalWe Ltd. I am currently one of the work package leaders in SalWe Diagnostics program GetItDone, WP502: “Extracellular Vesicles in Health and Disease”. I am active partner in EU consortium COST initiative Me-Had (European Network on Microvesicles and Exosomes in Health and Disease), the aims in this action are to improve the scientific education of Early-Stage Researchers, effectively accelerate the exchange of scientific data and technical knowledge in extracellular vesicle field. These types of actions often lead to novel scientific ideas and concepts that would not have been achieved by single research groups working in isolation in an academic, clinical or industry setting. I am also a vice president in the board of the oldest basketball sport club in Finland called Pantterit actively developing the club and promoting the healthy living and sports in East Helsinki area building collaboration with schools and youth houses.


Jaana Järvinen

Jaana has 17 years of experience on leading and developing international business at Accenture. She has been mainly working with communications, media and high-tech industry clients helping them to further develop their business and IT operations. Her core experience is developing, leading and transforming operations and businesses, as well as sales and people leadership. Jaana enjoys coaching and mentoring, and she has a special interest on health and wellbeing related start-ups.


Laura Juvonen

Laura is a results-oriented expert on development of innovation ecosystems and commercialization of emerging technologies in public-private interface. She has a broad perspective of different industry sectors based on 15+ years of experience from cross-cutting fields, e.g. nano technologies, advanced materials, computational engineering, cleantech and green growth. Laura is currently running the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation and she is also in the management group of the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries. She holds a D.Sc. in Computational Physics.


Petri Kajander

Petri has over 15 years experience of working with international growth companies. He is an entrepreneur who have co-founded Optogan Ltd. and Libera Foundation. Petri advices and helps hands-on companies with their business development, strategy, sales & marketing, and funding. He has a M.Sc (Econ) from Aalto University and is currently a member of the Mont Pelerin Society and Senior Fellow at the Cobden Centre. As a published author Petri occasionally writes to the major media.


Veera Lehmonen

Veera is the CEO and Co-founder of Cuckoo Workout, where she is responsible for Sales and Marketing. Cuckoo Workout is a web-based service that combines play, community and well-being. At Cuckoo Workout we want to get people exercising throughout the working day. Our users are reminded to take exercise breaks by an alarm and short 1-3 minutes long videos guide them through groovy workouts. Cuckoo Workout is a young company, that has Tekes funding, investment and users and is soon launching the product.


Ida Mänty

Ida is a Co-founder of Cuckoo Workout, where she is responsible for Design and product. Cuckoo Workout is a web-based service that combines play, community and well-being. At Cuckoo Workout we want to get people exercising throughout the working day. Our users are reminded to take exercise breaks by an alarm and short 1-3 minutes long videos guide them through groovy workouts. Cuckoo Workout is a young company, that has Tekes funding, investment and users and is soon launching the product.


Riitta Korpela

Professor Riitta Korpela chairs the Medical Nutrition Physiology research group at the Institute of Biomedicine.  She has supervised 16 PhD theses and 32 MSc theses and published over 270 scientific original papers and additionally reviews, book chapters and other articles and is an inventor of a number of patents.  In addition to her academic career she has a strong industrial experience since she has worked 20 years at Valio Ltd and 10 years in Karl Fazer Ab being the research director of Valio Ltd until 2010.   Her group has been is regarded as one of the frontier groups in the area of functional foods.  Korpela has a great number of advisory positions and positions of trust. At the moment she is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of The European Joint Programming Initiative “A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life”.  She also held the presidency of the board in the Strategic centre for Science, Technology and Innovations in Health and Wellbeing 2009-2010.  At present she is the president of the Finnish Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism.
