Startup ideas with a positive impact on the planet

Passionate about design, innovation, and sustainable development? Got an idea you want to pursue or a problem you want to solve but are not sure where to start? Do you have the desire to make an impact? Sustainability Startup Weekend is the right place to create a prototype for your idea, validate your business idea, find a team, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs.

Got a weekend to let us inspire you?

The perfect opportunity to pitch an idea, gather a team, and turn that idea into a startup is given by Sustainability Startup Weekend. The idea can be sustainability-focused, or simply a business that integrates sustainable practices in operations and strategy. The rest will be provided by us: the tools to get your idea produced in an incredibly short amount of time, test it with potential consumers, and pitch your startup in front of a panel of judges.

Don’t have a startup idea yet? We want you anyway - and we can bet that you will end up pitching something before the weekend ends!

What’s special about this event?

During the course of 54 hours, you’ll experience it all - the highs, the lows, the joys and pressure that make up life in a startup. While learning how to create a real company, you simultaneously meet the very best mentors, investors, co-founders, and sponsors, all of whom are more than ready to help get you started. Whoever you are and whatever dreams and aspirations you have, come take part in a weekend that could change your life and the future of many.

Sustainability is the future of business. We are ensuring that the entire weekend will be a green event itself, in every element, such as branded t-shirts, stationery, food & waste disposal. We’re incorporating ethical production and sustainably sourced or recycled materials throughout the event.

Who is this weekend for?

Sustainability Startup Weekend is designed as an inclusive program and event that aims to bring all sorts of people together, including, but not limited to:
  • Aspiring & experienced entrepreneurs;
  • Designers of all types;
  • Developers;
  • Non-technical talent (sales, business, finance, legal, etc.);
  • Passionate visionaries;
  • Sustainability enthusiasts;
  • Lifelong learners and educators;
  • Students from universities and secondary schools;
  • Professionals looking to switch careers or build new skills.

What do you need to bring?

One thing is for certain - you’ll need to bring lots of energy! Throughout the weekend you will pitch your own idea and listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets.

The idea should be something you have not previously worked on. You’ll get mentoring, feedback, and are likely to pivot your approach entirely.

What do you get out of it?

Your ticket price includes:
  • A new network of developers, designers, and business people eager, like you, to change the world.
  • 7 full delicious meals.
  • All the internet, coffee and tea you can consume.
  • Fantastic working space at P47.
  • Access to some of the area's best startup mentors.
  • Benefits and discounts from our global partners.
  • Plus, if your team wins, you will get heaps of additional resources.
  • Continuation in Red Brick Accelerator.
  • Tickets to Stream Startup Festival.
  • Consulting with some of the mentors.
  • More prizes to be announced soon!

Feeling inspired? Join us for a very special weekend, and be a part of the global Techstars Startup Weekend movement!

Ben Matthews

Having turned his hand to freelance web development four years ago, Ben has now looked to scale the role of the specialist web developer by creating web platforms for small businesses, visual artists, film production companies and professionals / influencers. He has created a range of specialist "digital platforms", which offer "WordPress As A Service", but also integrate with custom search and discovery services, including specialised webapps for finding local and niche businesses, local artists and independently produced films. As well as his scalable digital product, Ben offers consultancy, training and development services in the fields of user identification, behaviour, analytics, digital strategy, search engine optimization and enhancement, online sales funnels, service and technology integration (including cloud services and machine learning), and digital risk assessment. Ben is a total geek when it comes to all things online, and when he isn't busy integrating an API into a project, or attending developer / tech conferences, he is often speaking at local meetups or creating online video content for content managers and business owners to help develop, enhance and protect their online presence.

Antti Pitkänen
Idealistic, hand waving, software developing hippie person at Futurice

Antti is a startup minded software and business developer. He was one of the organizers of the first Techstars Startup Weekend in Tampere in 2018, an attendee in Techstars Startup Weekend Turku, a former Chairperson of Tribe Tampere, and a former Vice President of Tampere Entrepreneurship Society, so needless to say, the Tampere startup scene is close to his heart.

Antti works at Futurice doing software development, business development, marketing, public speaking, facilitation and a surprising amount of acting on camera, working primarily with the energy industry. He is also one of the organizers of the monthly TampereJS web developer meetups, a musician, eager exerciser, an adorer of furry animals, and a lover of bad puns.
