Sustainable Development Goals for Startups

Join us for a workshop by Nadim Choucair on how to work with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's)
After the 1 hour wokshop we will join Impact Hub Berlins resident entrepreneurs and friends for fruitful discussions on sustainable entrepreneurship.

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present while improving the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

This workshop session will tackle on elf the most important challenges many people and organisations encounter when presented with the SDGs as a framework is the question: “Where do we start?”. The SDGs are an interconnected network of targets and goals, that need to be approached as a system. While this is a source of complexity that can make answering that question even more daunting, one can leverage this systems approach to design a more concrete action plan and start working towards the SDGs while adapting to the local context and constraints. Furthermore, this approach can be used to use the SDGs as a starting point for sustainable innovation. Concretely, this session will help answer the “How do we start” question by:
  • -  Suggesting a way to reconcile and bridge the gap between personal motivations and professional requirements for people looking for ways to create positive social and environmental impact through their organisation
  • -  Delivering a simpler and participative approach to understanding the SDGs as a system of goals rather than a collection of 17 individual goals.

The participants wil:
  • -  Start with an alternative definition of sustainable development, moving the narrative away from compromise to one of opportunity.
  • -  If not done yet, get acquainted with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to it
  • -  Examine the SDGs by exploring, and suggesting, a way to reconcile and bridge the gap between personal motivations and organisational / professional constraints
  • -  Act on these insights to build a systemic approach to the SDGs as a first step in using the goals as a starting point to design & build new sustainable products or services, during an interactive mapping & clustering exercise
  • -  Be inspired to own a set of goals towards which they can contribute and towards which they can push their organisation to work.
  • -  Be introduced to the “Sustainability by Design” process The workshop is mean to be interactive and includes very short presentations from the participants about the work that they will do during the workshop, followed by a Q&A and discussion session.

TANGIBLE OUTCOME
In this interactive workshops, participants will develop an understand of the SDGs as an interconnected network of targets and goals, and will walk away with:
    • -  A personal / organisational SDG Map
    • -  A prioritisation plan of which SDG to work on
    • -  A first framed challenge, that can be used as the basis for an ideation exercise to develop new solutions.
