Judge Spotlight: Christoph Backes

On behalf of the StartupWeekend Space Team, I would like to introduce you to one of our judges, Christoph Backes. He will assess your team and your final product on Sunday evening, evaluating your business model, customer validation, technical and design execution.
Christoph Backes is an economist, consultant and theater actor. He is the Managing Director of U-institut and was the founding Executive Director of GründerZentrum Kulturwirtschaft (Business Incubator Cultural Industries) Aachen.
Since 2008, he has been acting as an advisor for the Initiative Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft der Bundesregierung (Initiative Culture and Creative Economy of the Federal Government) and the Kompetenzzentrum Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft des Bundes (National Competence Center Cultural and Creative Industries). As a consultant, it is important to him to ask the right questions, no matter how tricky.
He is a lecturer at various universities in Germany and Switzerland, and author of several studies and reports in the subject area of cultural and the arts. He authored, for example, the first German economic report on culture of for the city of Aachen in 2006. Today, among many other projects, he brings to realisation the annual award “Kultur- und Kreativpiloten Deutschland“ (Cultural and Creative Pilots Germany) initiative for the Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft des Bundes. Christoph Backes was the marketing director of the 1st RuhrTriennale (Festival of the Arts) and a lighting designer with performer Tim Fischer.
