About Techstars Global Startup Weekend COVID-19 Edition: 

This series of online Techstars Startup Weekends are run at a country level, focused on developing solutions that directly tackle COVID-19-related challenges. They are 54-hour online events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs - you'll connect with amazing mentors, industry experts, founders, and partners who are ready to help you get started. 

Each country will bring together hundreds or even thousands of participants that will work on prototypes for three days. This event is not only about bringing together developers who can work on software-based solutions for the crisis. It’s an opportunity for everyone interested in the topic to inspire and be inspired and to work together on developing inclusive solutions. Tickets to register your place for the event are completely free but you are able to make a donation, which will go to an organization selected by the organizing team, tackling the COVID-19 crisis. If you wish to make a donation, simply add any amount you wish to donate to the ‘Donation’ ticket option that will be available in the next few weeks.

Startup Weekend is here, and in collaboration with all the organizers of the Greek SWs, invites creative people to collaborate, remotely for the first time from all over the country, to find solutions related to COVID-19 that will triumph! Make the perfect start on April 24-26!

What is Startup Weekend?

Startup Weekend is one of the most popular youth entrepreneurship development institutions in the world today. Participants are invited to form teams and to develop and present comprehensive business plans within just 54 hours, under the guidance of mentors from the business, academic and investment sectors. This time, all this will happen from your home!For the first time, potential startuppers from all over Greece are joining forces to tackle problems arising from the state of the global pandemic, and are focusing on the business solutions of the next day.

Where?

Like all major events of this period worldwide, Startup Weekend GREECE REMOTE COVID-19 will be held entirely virtually and remotely for participants, mentors and judges, in a discord server and is expected to support thousands of attendees simultaneously!


How do I register? Is there any cost?

Anyone can register by April 24 here, and it is completely free! Upon Participation you can:
  1. have the opportunity to work on your idea,
  2. be consulted with mentors and market people
  3. work with other people who share common interests
  4. get your idea validated by experienced judges
  5. create your own startup!

What should I expect?

  1. Startup Weekend starts on Friday afternoon with a presentation of the concepts/ideas and formation of the teams!
  2. Continues on Saturday at an intensive pace with brainstorming, business canvas development and prototyping.
  3. and finally it concludes on Sunday night with the remote presentations to the judges who will evaluate the result based on the viability of the business plan and its innovation.
  4. Throughout the event, successful mentors from the business “realm” are at the side of the teams to guide participants and share valuable experiences and advice.
  5. Winners win services as prizes that will give them the opportunity to showcase their idea nationally and internationally.

Giannis Stratakis
Digital Analytics & Optimization Team Leader at Aegean Airlines

Giannis joined the digital world back in 2012, after graduating from the University of Piraeus (Business Administration & Management) and attending a diploma in Digital Marketing from CIM. He started working in one of the early well-known startups (Daily Secret) at that time in Greece, gaining significant experience in online advertising. Since then he has established a solid digital analytics background, implementing data strategies and measurement solutions to improve online performance and digital products for eCommerce. After 4 years in Aegean Airlines, one of the biggest eCommerce in Greece, he is currently leading the Analytics, Optimization, and SEO department of the company.


Yiannis Yiannis Kotsis-Giannarakis
GM at HAMAC - ΣΕΚΕΕ

Yiannis Kotsis-Giannarakis is an entrepreneur, active in electronic publishing and digital content since 1985.
He was one of the founding members of the Greek leading internet portal www.in.gr where he acted as Managing Director for the first five years, from conception till its establishment as a major media factor.
Among others he was Director of the Greek edition of National Geographic books and videos, newspaper collumnist and editor of various electronic and paper publications. and reports on Innovatio, Entrepreneurship and STEM issues.

Born 1959 in Alexandria, he studied Biology in Athens, never finished his PhD in Bioinformatics, and spends some weekends hiking and mountain-top communicating with very low power in radiowaves.

He is currently General Manager at Hellenic Association of Mobile Application Companies (HAMAC - ΣΕΚΕΕ).



Stephanie Contomichalos
Founder of Nefeli Nine Retreats

This is twofold for me, and stems from two equally important things: Love for Greece: I grew up in the UK, lived briefly in France and in the US. As my grandparents got older and we started spending more time with them in Athens, I started discovering Greece more and it’s an outstanding place. Traveling around the mainland and falling in love with everything I saw! Greece has beautiful sea, mountains, rivers, it has huge amounts of culture, fantastic food, and great weather. He’s been working in creative advertising and communications for the past 20 years and has worked in both Portugal and the UK for different global markets like EMEA, LATAM and APAC. Samsung, HP, Fox International Channels, Nestlé, Bentley Motors, Xbox, Colgate, Virgin Active, Bentley Motors, Unilever and BP are some of the clients he has worked for. Maria Fragkaki
Freelance Digital Marketer & Content Creator | Social Media Instructor | Startup Consultor

Her experience in chess as an elite sport led her to the University of Crete at the Mathematics Department, but her passion for content changed her path.

Starting as a Social Media Manager at a Personal Development Company in 2014, Maria discovered the Digital World mainly as a copywriter. After this experience, she created her own literature blog and worked as a Content Manager at a Creative Digital Marketing Agency.  Right now, Maria works as a Freelance Digital Marketer & Content Creator, with 5+ years of working experience, 38+ satisfied companies, and more than 270 personal archives as a content writer.

Patrick Bosteels

Simon Bensasson
Founder of OK!Thess

Simon, born 1945 in Thessaloniki, has an architecture degree from Aristotle and computer science from the University of London. He has worked as an architect in Zambia and Spain. He worked in the UK initially as a business consultant where he founded two companies in the IT field. In 1990 Simon entered the European Commission in Brussels, being responsible for research on future and emerging technologies in IT and telecommunications.

He dealt with the promotion of "digital cities" and international cooperation in research and technological development. Later, as the senior officer responsible for international relations of the EU in the same sectors, contributed to the preparation of the EU negotiations and agreements with countries such as China, Russia, the US, Brazil and others.

He came back home to Thessaloniki where he taught European politics at ACT. In 2014 he was elected member of the Thessaloniki City Council with special responsibility for innovation. In the latter capacity he has been the founder of OK!Thess an effort to catalyse an innovation ecosystem in the city as well as a pre-incubator for promising startups.


Alexis Komselis
Director, Alba hub for Entrepreneurship and Development (AHEAD)

Alexis co-founded and leads AHEAD, the entrepreneurship center at Alba Graduate Business School. AHEAD supports entrepreneurs from different backgrounds and industries through training and capacity building. He also teaches at Alba's MSc in Entrepreneurship, bridging the classroom with the entrepreneurial reality. Alexis has experience in training, coaching and mentoring entrepreneurs, primarily in the areas of value proposition, business modelling, and governance.

Athina Polina Dova
Chief Operations Officer and Co-Founder of Owiwi

Athina Polina Dova is the Chief Operations Officer and Co-Founder of Owiwi.
She has graduated from Law School and holds an MSc in International Business & Management. Combining legal background, people skills and business acumen she maintains control of diverse business operations and secures the functionality of business to drive extensive and sustainable growth.

She is very active in women entrepreneurship empowerment initiatives and mentoring programs, she has been featured in Greek and International Press, included three times in Fortune 40 under 40 List, she has been nominated for Greek International Woman Award and Female Startup Founder of the Year while this year was chosen as National Female Role Model 2019 at the Global Startup Awards.

She is also elected in the Board of Directors at GiCluster of Corallia, the first creative industries' cluster established Greece regarding the Gaming and Creative Technologies and Applications Industry.


Olesea Fortuna
President of GEN Moldova

Olesea Fortuna is a qualified leader with an extensive experience in executive management of various community building and leadership projects and private enterprises, entrepreneurship ecosystem and development programs, large events, acceleration programs, with business and institutional development training and consulting experience of over 14 years. She has a leading role in the education of startups in Moldova, being the President of GEN Moldova (Global Entrepreneurship Network).

She has been involved as a speaker, mentor, group coach, experimental trainer in projects focused on business development at both international and national levels. Her interests revolve around assisting entrepreneurs in creating, launching, developing national and international businesses and particularly in creative industries and sustainable business models. Among projects deployed in the country she has participated in the design of the first rural entrepreneurship cup (a rural business competition deployed and acceleration program with Estonian partners and with several rural incubators), designed the first fashion acceleration program in collaboration with Fashion Technology Accelerator from Milan and a French fashion consulting agency, deployed and consulted one of the first ecological CSAs groups in Moldova (Community Supported Agriculture) With regard to women entrepreneurship: Olesea has initiated projects for young women starting with 2010 "Life and Business Skills for Girls", started women programs such as GEN WOW Program - a peer to peer women entrepreneurship development program (2014),GEN Creative Women , invited as a national country expert in an EU-funded project "Women Entrepreneurship – A Job Creation Engine for South Eastern Europe" and others.

She was nominated and accepted the role of WED World Ambassador for Moldova for 2015 and 2016.

Sotiris Bantas
Founder & CEO, Centaur Analytics

Raised in the rawhide trade, an ancient profession tied closely to Greece’s rural economy, it was generally expected Sotiris would follow suit like the generations before him. But his love for numbers and circuits led him to pursue engineering and a career in semiconductors, growing his design automation software startup to multi-million dollar accounts in Silicon Valley and Japan.

Returning to his roots, Centaur allows him to create innovative technology that makes food production safer and ultimately more democratic – proof that creative solutions can help crack tough humanitarian problems.

Sotiris has a degree in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in semiconductor design. He holds four US patents and has several pending.


Vasilis Georgitzikis

I'm a Computer Engineer turned entrepreneur. I started organizing and managing things at the University, organizing the 2011 FOSSCOM conference, starting P-Space, the first hackerspace in Greece, and then starting codebender, an online programming environment for IoT and one of the early Greek startups in 2012.

Natalia Kritsali
Social Entrepreneur & Chair of the Board at Bloode

Natalia has been working as a Service and Experience Designer merging strategy and experience design, helping clients to deliver value and achieve service & experience transformation. She has worked with companies like Nike, Ikea, and Eurosport as well as delivered impact-driven work for non-profits.
Natalia graduated for the RCA with an MA in Service Design. During her bachelor studies, back in 2014, she co-founded Bloode.org, an awarded non-profit organization in Greece, that enables people to donate blood through a digital service.

Nikolas is the founder and CEO of Geekbot. Starting his career in 2000 he has founded and managed several startups. The past years he is volunteering as a mentor to local startup incubator programs and participates in international panels on future of work and remote working.


Amalia Agathou
Fashion/Tech, Strategy and Innovation Consultant, SW mentor & organiser

Amalia Agathou has more than 12 years of experience in the European startup ecosystem and the creative industries as an entrepreneur and innovation consultant.

A firm believer in innovation fuelled by cross-border and and cross-industry collaboration, Amalia has designed and worked on numerous international projects that merge various industries with the world of startups, like EDF Energy's Pulse Awards, Global Fashion Battle and CFE's Fashiontech accelerator.

Vasiliki Kiou

Vasiliki Kiou is a member of the Athens Bar Association and Foreign Legal Specialist in California. She holds an LL.B. degree from Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an LL.M. in Science, Technology & Intellectual Property Law from University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
Since 2015, Vasiliki has been an Associate at Ergon Law Group, a law firm in San Francisco, California advising and assisting established U.S. and European businesses and start-ups on business formation, corporate governance, financing, contracts and intellectual property. 

She is a member of the Hellenic Law Society of Northern California and advises Greek companies on procedural and documentation matters about product exporting to the United States.

From August 2015 until May 2018 he was proudly fully dedicated himself to Intrideo, leading the concept from day one. Bill also owns a handful of dead startups on his “trophy room”. Bill is active in many projects (Spotoo app, Artistic) either as a co-founder or as an advisor and an investor in an ever-growing portfolio of businesses.

Dr. John Pagonis is a UX researcher and software production coach who helps teams produce useful software. John's specialty lies with UX research, Scrum coaching, requirements elicitation, requirements management, product discovery and the integration of UX design into agile software production.


Fofi Mimi-Saltiel
Founder of coho – the coworking home

Fofi Mimi-Saltiel (Ph.D. Ruhr University of Bochum and Industrial Engineer, University of Hagen Germany, Mechanical Engineering, Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki) has a 15-year experience in TQM training, consulting and auditing in various German and Greek companies. She was visiting lecturer, Department of Industrial Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace and Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Thessaly. In 2013 she founded coho – the coworking home.


Constantinos Nikolaidis

I graduated with a bachelors degree in law and a masters in Banking & Finance law, and have previously worked as a Tax Consultant for PwC, and as an Associate at Index Ventures backed startup SeedLegals. I am currently working as a Senior Analyst for Greek based VC firm Velocity.Partners, and I have extensively researched the legal & regulatory aspects of cryptocurrencies.


Sotiris Sotiropoulous
Senior UX Researcher & Designer

Sotiris is a Senior UX researcher & designer who helps teams inform product, service and business decisions, by gathering valuable evidence. He has worked across multiple industries, conducting user research, designing solutions, training researchers and carrying out workshops. Synthesizing user journey mapping with KPI optimisation in an agile environment, helps him improve products in a continuous and iterative way.


Nikos Zachariadis
Lancom Chief Commercial Officer

Nikos is basically a chemist. He studied chemistry, but he soon discovered that chemical compounds are less interesting than human relationships.However, chemistry explains analytically the processes of life, so its reduction to “human compounds” leads to a wonderful way of thinking.In his professional career so far, for about 22 years, Nikos promotes and strengthens formal sales people to people who produce profitable work, with respect and commitment to their collaborators and customers.Nikos does not like numbers. Numbers are just a result that is easy to come, if people can overcome the concept of “opposite” and move on to the concept of “together”.

In the last 6 years he is living the dream of his life, applying his whole experience, devoting all his energy and enjoying every minute of the day at Lancom as Chief Commercial Officer.
