SHE - An event for all the talented, entrepreneurial women of Bangalore to get inspired and explore starting their own ventures!

Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur? The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014. The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

Startup Weekend SHE Bangalore
Gear up, Women of Bangalore! Workbench Projects is partnering with HenIndia (HerEntrepreneurialNetwork), BHiVE Workspace, Printo, Intel Software, YourStory, eMyPA, Uber The August Fest and IBM Bluemix and jumping head on into our city’s famed startup scene by organizing a Startup Weekend focusing on women entrepreneurs on the 29th, 30th and 31st of May!

Startup Weekend brings together active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is a gathering of passionate people who come together to get things done; to learn, network, bridge the gap between trades, expose potential and see actual results. All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Join us for SHE, a special women’s edition of Startup Weekend where we are assembling a host of the most talented, enterprising women of Bangalore.
In this day and age where there is an upraise of women empowerment in every discipline and field, we believe that an adequate opportunity should be given to these women to group together, brainstorm and join hands to create something meaningful for our society. WE provide the working space, food, new friends, mentors and inspiring speakers and judges while YOU supply the energy and innovation to build something big over the weekend.  Whether you are an entrepreneur, a student, a housewife or even a CEO of a company, if you have the drive and passion to build something exciting and see it graduate from a simple idea to working product, we guarantee this event is a perfect chance for you to exercise your entrepreneurial faculties to the fullest. So get ready to put on your thinking caps and register for SHE, the best (and most productive) weekend of your lives!

FAQ
Why a women-focused Startup Weekend?
The entrepreneurial talent we see from women in Bangalore is inspiring, and we are eager to create an event that will showcase it.  One of our major goals for SHE is  to provide the opportunity for aspiring women entrepreneurs of our community to (1) get inspired by an idea/product/team enough to explore starting their own venture, or (2) become more connected with other brilliant entrepreneurially-minded individuals in Bangalore and thus more engaged within our local entrepreneurial ecosystem (which is one of the best in India, if we say so ourselves!)

Are men allowed to attend Women’s Startup Weekend?
YES… but there’s a catch!  If you are a man who wishes to attend, you can if and only if you find a woman participant to bring you along.  Since Startup Weekend SHE Bangalore is about connecting entrepreneurial women through the process of building exciting companies, we want to connect them to the best resources and people out there – that includes both men and women. That said, to ensure that we maintain a high percentage of female participants, the number of tickets we issue to men will be limited (there will be a wait list).  If you’re a man who wants to attend, find a female participant to bring you along, and do so quickly! (Note: Each female participant can only bring one male participant.)

Will the participants be required to pitch or work on “women-focused” startup ideas?
NO. Participants can pitch and work on any kind of startup idea they wish!

What are the categories under which the participants can pitch ideas?
We have kept it quite wide open but some of the categories under which people can come up with ideas would include hardware, product design, software applications, sustainable development, social issues, embedded systems, digital fabrication, food and beverages, systems integration, IoT, wearables, interactives, user experience, creative technology etc. You can pitch ideas which do not fall under these categories as well. Perfect time to exercise your imaginations and respond to a need in society!

A Bachelors in biotechnology and a Masters in applied genetics, Sreeranjini worked with a couple of bioinformatics companies initially. She then moved on to work at the National Centre for Biological Sciences(NCBS) in Bangalore, to get a hands-on approach to research. She had to leave NCBS to dispense her motherly duties. She wanted to keep her kids engaged creatively through interesting games but she found that most of the toys and games were noisy, not thought-provoking and were plastic made. So what began as a search for engaging activities for her own kids ended in Kavade — her dream. Kavade is a store which has loads of ancient board games as well as puzzles and brain teasers. Kavade Attic — a vibrant exploratory space with loads of games and books. It is a proposed alternative to videogames parlours, engaging children and adults alike. The groups coming together at the Attic will slowly grow into a community with similar sensibilities (The space has a cute café too, so check it out).
Sreeranjini is definitely the go-to person to learn how to set up a business where you turn your dreams into reality!
