Startup Weekend Chennai

Welcome to Start-up Weekend Aaruush edition. What is Aaruush? Aaruush is the annual techno-management festival of SRM University, Chennai. The word ‘Aaruush’ means 'First ray of Sun'. It is held for a period of four days and four nights during the odd semester. The festival consists of various science and technology based competitions, symposia, events, guest lectures, video conferences, exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops. Since its inception in the year 2007, this ingenious idea, which has now grown to the heights of a Brand has sought to provide a platform where students can showcase a fine blend of imagination and technical dexterity. Aaruush continues to delve into unexplored avenues, leading the participants to do things in ways that are truly unique and exciting. With each passing year, Aaruush has evolved into a phenomenon that stands true to its mantra of “invent, innovate and inspire.”   This is the first time Aaruush is taking up the venture of a Start-Up Weekend aiming to inculcate new business ideas from young minds. Be prepared to drown yourself in the perfect aura of awesomeness and creativity. Meet the best minds of city working and create the next revolution.  How does it work?
We aim to bring together enthusiasts like you to share ideas, form teams, build products, and, most importantly, launch startups.

  • Friday: Attendees pitch their ideas and inspire others to join their teams. Teams are therefore created to work on the best ideas.
  • Saturday and Sunday: This is where you debate, build, and pitch. And build some more. Teams will focus on building a prototype of their idea/product. During this period teams will also focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing startup methodologies and building a minimum viable product.
  • Sunday: In the evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.
Who can participate?    Think of a typical Startup Weekend session as a hackathon with a strong emphasis on business and design. Your prior educational qualifications or stream doesn’t matter at all. We are only looking for a passion to innovate. Typical crowd of Startup Weekend consists of

Shyam Sekhar
CEO & Founder at Smartvalue Equisearch Private Limited

Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience. The words of Paul Coelho aptly summaries the journey of Shyam Sekhar. Tossing up between studying economics and engineering, he reluctantly took on the second. After completing engineering, his earlier calling returned. The hunger and curiosity of economics and business took over. The natural progression led to investing. Hanging around with fellow investors who shared the same passion, he spent the next few years thinking economics and stocks every waking hour. Equity research in India was an evolving discipline in the early nineties and setting up a research desk was the logical next. But, what made it unique was that he never sold his research. Research was proprietary and used by a small group of investors with shared beliefs and values. Knowledge and information were shared freely within this peer group.
Being an independent thinker with set values and beliefs, he took a conscious decision never to work in any company. Knowing that it made sense not to work in an environment where the values mismatched, he dreamt of building a clean consulting business in investment strategy on his own. But, the nineties were early days. That left him with investing as the only option. So building a proprietary portfolio was the way to go. Researching businesses, spotting opportunities and building portfolios was all he did for a decade. The dream of building an investment strategy business got anchored in 2003. He started Smartvalue Equisearch private limited as an investment strategy firm. Over the next eight years, he built a professional research and strategy firm with domain expertise in equity research, investment strategy, fund research and investment analytics. The firm is poised to break new ground with ithought, it’s wealth management division that rolled in 2008 just when the markets bottomed. The dream of building an investor centric business of scale and substance is now playing out.
