Startup Weekend Education: 6-8 Feb 2015 in Hyderabad.

A 100 creative problem solvers, innovators, idea generators, teachers and aspiring entrepreneurs passionate about solving challenges and problems in India's Education Sector will come together in Hyderabad now!

In Aug 2014, here is how Bangalore rocked at its first ever Startup Weekend Education! (Click to View) 

Registrations are now open! You could be a school head, teacher, parent, college student, NGO worker or just a person passionate about education.... inside or outside classrooms!

Have you ever had an idea for improving education? 

Here’s your opportunity to transform your education ideas into action in 54 hours. Find the right people with complementary skills & the passion to build an education product in one weekend. Design for learning, conduct user tests, receive coaching from experienced education designers & industry professionals and win prizes that will help take your idea to the next level!

Friday night: 60-second pitches that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable education concepts. Educators validate ideas, then all attendees vote. We hope you’ll pitch, but definitely not required!

Saturday and Sunday: Work days! Teams focus on user research, customer development, validating their ideas and building prototypes with the help of experienced coaches from the education and entrepreneurial world. You’re welcome to stay and work as long as the venue will allow!

Sunday evening: Teams demo their education products and receive valuable feedback from a panel of expert judges. Winning teams take home a grab bag of great tools to help launch their company!

Speakers


Pankaj Jain

Pankaj Jain is the venture partner of 500 Startups. 500 Startups is a venture capital seed fund and startup accelerator based in Silicon Valley. It has invested in approximately 900 technology startups globally since its inception in 2010. A team of 40 people manages seed investments in 10 countries. Prior to this assignment Jain was consulting for Times Internet’s TLabs accelerator in Delhi area where he was focused on deal sourcing and running the accelerator. He is also the lead organiser of Startup Weekend India. Before moving to India in 2007, Jain spent over ten years running technology and operations in NYC for multiple hedge funds, including LTCM.


Nanduri Subrahmanyam

Dr. Nanduri Subrahmanyam is an independent consultant on Business Strategy, Sales and Marketing. His current clientele is from the domains of publishing, print and electronic content distribution, experiential methods in 
School Education and Medical Services marketing. His background is as varied as his interests. A lawyer and a former teacher, he was the Managing Director of Tata McGraw-Hill in Delhi, India. Responsible for the overall management of the professional and educational publishing company, Dr.Subramanyam supervised all the functions of this enterprise which has grown significantly in market share ad revenues. Dr.Subrahmanyam began his career with Tata McGraw-Hill in August 1976 when he joined the company as an Area Representative for Western India in Mumbai. He worked in several other positions since then and was inducted on to the Board of Directors of the company. He was designated Managing Director, in 1996. In 2004 he left the company and joined a French multinational in the domain of third party Quality Assurance services by name Bureau Veritas. He worked as the Vice President for South Asia for its Consumer Products Services Division which has a strong presence in India and across the world. He holds dual Graduation in Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws from Andhra University, He holds Master of Science from Mumbai University, and a Ph.D in Botany from Mumbai University. He also has to his credit Certificate Course in Marketing from Jamnalal Bajaj institute of Management, Mumbai University.

Karthik Rapaka

Karthik Rapaka is the City Director at Teach For India overseeing Hyderabad city operations - 130 fellows, 15 staff members impacting over 4000 children across 39 low-income private and government schools. Prior to his current role, Karthik completed 2-year Teach For India fellowship of being a class teacher for 45 students in the old city Karwan area of Hyderabad. Earlier, Karthik was a management consultant at Deloitte Consulting LLP in the U.S working with over a dozen global Fortune 500 firms (J & J, Pfizer/Wyeth, Ford Motor Company, Cigna, American Express, Caterpillar, Celanese, Invensys to name a few) providing data-driven strategic business advisory and implementation support on large – scale transformation projects. Karthik completed his B.S and M.S degrees in Engineering from Rutgers University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign respectively. Additionally, he completed Summer Institute for General Management from Stanford GSB and Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator training from Teach For All.


Srinivas Kollipara

Srinivas is the Chief Operating Officer of the IIIT-H Foundation, which runs the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. CIE is one of the largest incubation centres in the country with 24,000 sq. ft. of space and around 45 startups on site. He is an active startup consultant and mentor, and advises startups on building viable, fundable and profitable companies by refining business models and strategies in order to build sustainable competitive advantages. Srinivas has over 20 years of international management experience in strategic planning, business development and product management, ensuring the creation of long-term value for organizations from customers, markets, and relationships.


Ramesh Loganathan
VP (Products) & Center Head, Progress Software

Ramesh is responsible for leading the product development at the Hyderabad Labs, providing strategic guidance to the product teams. Specifically led the transformation from offshore dev to a product engineering lab, with focus on cross-product capabilities, Common Technology and innovation for the SOA/RPM and Data integration products. Prior to Progress, he was the VP of Middleware Technologies at Pramati. He helped setup the team that built the Sonic Workbench on Eclipse, which eventually transitioned to Progress Software- India. At Pramati, he started the Technology consulting division offering high value consulting around middleware infrastructure & Web2.0 collaboration in the enterprises. 

An accomplished Technologist, has over 20 years product engineering and R&D leadership experience. Regularly speaks at tech workshops and seminars in India. Recently co-authored a book on ‘SOA approach to Integration’. He's an Adjunct Faculty at IIIT-Hyderabad, and teaches courses on middleware technologies and distributed systems. He's the Chair of ACM Hyderabad Chapter since Jan 2012, Regional council member at Nasscom & Managing committee member at ITsAP & TiE. He's a part of the National program team for Nasscom Products conclave and ITsAP Hyderabad Software products showcase.


Mamtha Banerjee
Founder & CEO, MagicFlix

Mamtha Banerjee, Founder, CEO is an accomplished tech executive. Mamtha was founder, CEO at InvestmentYogi, a leading personal finance and online tax portal and Director of Technology at Travelocity. She has a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois. She’s a startup enthusiast, who loves the outdoors, ran the Paris Marathon and hiked to the Everest Base Camp. She was a founding member of Asha Dallas, Hyderabad Startups and Grace Hopper India Entrepreneur Quest. She lives in Redmond with her family. Her kids Anya and Rudy are Magicflix beta testers. She introduced the timer feature to keep them in check!


Anil Bhansali
MD, Microsoft India (R&D)

Anil Bhansali, MD, Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt Ltd and General Manager, Cloud & Enterprise,  MSIDC

Anil Bhansali is the Managing Director of Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt Ltd and the General Manager of the Cloud and Enterprise engineering teams at MSIDC. 

A 23-year veteran at Microsoft, Anil began his career with Microsoft in Redmond in 1991 as part of the Office division where he worked on MS Excel for multiple releases. He was the Partner Development Manager in the Office Shared Services Team that worked on SharePoint Team Services V1.0 and Windows SharePoint Service version 2.0. 

Anil relocated to India in 2004 as Director of the Windows Live Platforms Services Group. He established and drove several engineering efforts at MSIDC before taking over the engineering leadership of the Windows feature engineering group within MSIDC in 2006. From 2011 onwards Anil is leading teams working on engineering features for the Cloud and Enterprise division. 

Anil has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from SUNY, Stony Brook. 

When not at work, Anil spends time with his children at home or travelling. He has a passion for street food, has trekked to  the Everest Base camp and enjoys spreading the written word via social work at Pustakar. He is also a marathon runner and has completed several national and international marathons including the New York marathon.

Prasanna Boni

Prasanna Boni is the COO/Co-Founder of Edutor Technologies. A technocrat with a tremendous passion for helping learners, Prasanna brings with him over 14 years of entrepreneurship, technology and operations experience to Edutor. He was a co-founder and VP Operations at YASU Technologies, an enterprise software product company based out of Hyderabad. YASU's products had over 150 active international customers across globe before it was acquired by SAP in 2007. Prasanna also ran an initiative that took mobile science labs to kids across schools. He has previously worked at SAP Labs and Infosys Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Prasanna holds an MBA (PGPX) from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and a B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Madras.


SubbaRaju Pericherla
Entrepreneur and Startup Evangelist

19+ years of building & transitioning businesses across the Globe. Has elite recognition in business circles as trustworthy and accomplished businessman backed up by various awards. A start-up evangelist and a thought provoking leader and consensus builder having a knack of getting things done.
As a passion he actively engages with Startup Communities, Industry, Business Forums and Educational Institutions. He believes in Human Empowerment and on the mission of helping younger generation towards Entrepreneurship and Employability. Apart from his core responsibilities, he is SLP Fellow and Charter Member of TIE, an active member of HMA and NHRD and is an active participant of Non-Profit Organizations like LetsVote (Member – Core Committee), Freemasons and Rotary Club International Member).


Pankaj Diwan
Founder CEO of Uptec Idealabs Ltd

Pankaj Diwan is the Managing Director at UPTEC IDEALABS LIMITED, Hyderabad. He holds an engineering graduate with distinction from Osmania University. He has been worked and delivered large scale solutions to several Industry leaders like HP, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Quest and Verizon. He is an ardent follower of technology and he was interviewed by BBC for his work on Digital certification. He is very passionate about skill development and employment generation and has been the founder and chief mentor of IDEALABS programme. He is currently on the board of several engineering college boards as a key member of curriculum development and training methodology.


Mayur Patnala
Co-Founder & Social Worker

Mayur Patnala is a Social Worker and is passionate about Social Innovation. He is Co-founder & Governing Board Member of Nirmaan Organization (www.nirmaan.org) started in Pilani in 2005 which works in government schools, career counselling, livelihoods etc., with 700+ volunteers from BITS,Pilani, Goa and Hyd campuses along with 3 corporate chapters, which impacted over 1 lakh lives. Previously, in his role in Government of Andhra Pradesh as State Mission Manager, Skill Development Mission, he led a team which trained 5000 economically backward youth and employed 2500 of them. He is a graduate of BITS-Pilani (Pilani campus) in B.E.(hons) Computer Science and B.E. (hons) Mechanical. BITS Alumni Association has conferred BITSAA 30 under 30 Award in Community Service category in BITSAA Global Meet 2014.


Pramod Ponnaluri

Pramod Ponnaluri is the founder of Kitki, an experiential education firm that transforms learning into an exciting experience. A product of BITS-Pilani, Pramod worked in equity research and management consulting roles before starting Kitki in 2012. In the past two years, he developed educational content, facilitated several workshops and field visits at schools and sold products & services to parents and schools. Currently a board game designer, Pramod believes play based learning could be an answer to some of the fundamental problems in Indian education sector.


Sowmya Velayudham

Sowmya Vel leads the Business Development efforts and Sales team at Gray Matters India. Gray Matters India is a social enterprise that aspires to transform the landscape of school education in India using education analytics to unlock the power of big data in education.  Prior to her current role in Gray Matters, she worked in start-up divisions of global pharmaceutical companies like Dr. Reddy's and Novartis in various roles spanning corporate strategy, financial planning, marketing, product and brand management. Before donning the business avatar, she was a cancer researcher at Penn State College of Medicine, post which she did her MBA from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. Sowmya is a scientist turned strategist turned market analyst turned social entrepreneur.


Kartik Agarwal

Kartik Agarwal if the Associate Director- Centre for Executive Education & Career Advancement Services at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. He is a graduate of the full time Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Management at the Indian School of Business with Concentration in Marketing and Strategy & Leadership.

She has also a recipient of the 2014 Stanford Ignite Program Fellowship, an initiative by Stanford Graduate School of Business.
