TechStars Startup Weekend Surat (Social Innovation)

Social innovations are new strategies, concepts, ideas and organizations that meet the social needs of different elements which can be from working conditions and education to community development and health — they extend and strengthen civil society.

What is social innovation?
“Social innovation is the process of developing and deploying effective solutions to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues in support of social progress”. Social innovation can be new strategies, concept and ideas that meet the social needs of different elements which can be from working conditions and education to community development and health.

How Social Innovation is different from social entrepreneurship?
Although social entrepreneurship has become a popular rallying point for those trying to improve the world, social change can happen outside of them. As a matter of fact, solutions have historically come from the nonprofit, private, and government sectors. The concept of social innovation focuses attention on the ideas and solution that create social value- as well as the processes through which they are generated, regardless of where they are coming from.

Why do we need social innovation?
Social innovation aims to increase human well-being. It responds to societal demands that markets or existing institutions do not traditionally address. Through social innovation, different actors including civil society, entrepreneurs and policy-makers create or reconfigure social arrangements or networks, with the goal of enhancing development outcomes with respect to the economy, society and the environment. Social innovation can introduce new solutions to challenges faced by rural areas, especially those considered as marginalised.

Example for social innovations are:
1. Sink faucet nozzle
The Altered:Nozzle is the worlds most extreme water saving nozzle. It installs easily into your existing tap. By atomizing water we can use 98% less water and still retain full functionality. And if you need a little more, then you switch to our regular saving mode. Still 75% savings, but all the water you need.
  • Fits into your existing tap.
  • Super easy installation. 30 sec.
  • Pays for itself in a couple of months!
  • Multiple finishes and sizes
  • Lead Free Eco Brass
2. Algae water bottles
Product design student Ari Jónsson debuted these biodegradable water bottles at the Reykjavik design festival in Iceland. He created the bottles out of red algae powder and water, so they're naturally made and even edible — if you're into that kind of thing.Jónsson was inspired to create this bottle after finding out that more than 50% of plastic is used only once and then thrown away.

What can not be consider as social innovations:
  • Bloof Donation App, NGOs etc
Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend Surat is a full weekend-long experience. Your ticket includes:
  • 7 full (and delicious) meals over the course of the weekend
  • Benefits and discounts from our global partners
  • One-on-one time with amazing mentors
  • A new network of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs eager, like you, to change the world.
  • All the internet and coffee you can consume.
