We live in an exciting time when new technologies are changing our interactions and relationships with food. Foodtech is fundamentally changing how we cook, eat, find, share and experience food.
Galway is hosting the first ever Food and Technology Startup Weekend in Ireland! This is a fantastic opportunity to Combine your love of technology and food, build a team, and launch a startup in 54 hours. We are looking for those with business, developer and designer backgrounds, all foodies welcome!

Declan Droney
Founder, Kinvara Smoked Salmon

Declan Droney is an experienced entrepreneur, business consultant and business mentor. He is the founder of one of Ireland’s most distinctive, artisan food companies, Kinvara Smoked Salmon Ltd. The company exports to the US, Hong Kong and Japan and also operates a worldwide mail-order business through its website. He is also a Business Mentor with the Galway Local Enterprise Office, the Mayo Local Enterprise Office, SCCUL and Enterprise Ireland. He is also a lecturer to the UCD Innovation Academy and on the New Frontiers programme at GMIT.


Mark McGann



Cáit Noone

Cáit Noone joined Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in 2007 and is the Head of the College for Tourism and Arts and Vice President for International Engagement. Cáit has worked in Higher Education since 1993 and brings significant international education experience to GMIT. As well as working for a number of international hotel management schools, Cait has been involved in various research projects in the tourism and food sectors in Ireland, UK, Switzerland and Asia. She serves on a number of West of Ireland groups assisting with regional and local economic development. Cáit is also the academic representative to The Taste Council in Ireland and is an external examiner in a number of Institutes of Technology in Ireland. Currently she participates in the Galway European Capital of Culture Steering Committee and the Galway European Region of Gastronomy Steering Committee. For the last three years she has volunteered with SCCUL Enterprises as a Food and Agriculture Judge alongside Declan Droney. Cáit has also advised food SME’s across the country.


Saibh Egan
Creative Director, Into The West Blogger Network. Fashion Photographer, Blogger, Designer & Printer.

Saibh is creative director of Into The West Blogger Network, Ireland's leading network for bloggers. They work to connect and support bloggers and to link them up with brands and companies also. As creative director, she oversees the media content, planning, blogging and PR for both the network and #itwbnBlogSchool.

Having worked with many Galway companies in the early years of social media, she now teaches blogging workshops in Galway (#itwbnBlogSchool) as well as helping many small companies with their social media strategy.

As well as blogging personally since 2009, she has been working with other Irish bloggers in the areas of design, branding, web design/layout and offline marketing materials too. She thrives on helping people unlock their talents and helping them to realise their dreams. Saibh loves to share the knowledge she’s have gained over the years and takes great pleasure in seeing all the blogs come alive and grow. Saibh’s core personal ethos is for people to support each other and share knowledge.


Dr. Lisa Ryan
Head of the Natural Sciences Department (GMIT)

Dr Lisa Ryan obtained her PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry at UCC in 2004. Following her postdoctoral research experience Dr Ryan moved to the UK to a Senior Lectureship in Human Nutrition at Bournemouth University before moving on to another Senior Lectureship at Oxford Brookes University in 2008 where she joined the Functional Food Centre.  In 2010 she was asked to take over the running of the Functional Food Centre as Operations Director. Following her time at Oxford Brookes University Dr Ryan was invited to Monash University in Melbourne, Australia to help establish the BASE (Be Active Sleep & Eat) Research Facility and lead the Functional Food research stream. To date she has worked with over 50 industry partners including small discrete projects and larger clinical trials and has also attracted research funding from competitive funding agencies such as the Medical Research Council (MRC, UK), The Nuffield Trust (UK) and The Wellcome Trust (UK). Last year Dr Ryan was awarded the prestigious Agrifood Fellowship in Australia to investigate the potential of marine polyphenols as anti-diabetic agents. She is widely published in the area of functional foods and has given many invited national and international presentations. Dr While in the UK, she worked with some of the triathletes and cyclists for the 2012 Olympics as a sports nutritionist. Dr Ryan has recently returned to Ireland from Australia to accept the post of Head of the Natural Sciences Department in the School of Science and Computing at GMIT. 


Melissa Snover
Managing Director of Katjes Fassin UK Ltd., Birmingham, UK

August 2015 – Based in Birmingham, UK, Katjes Fassin UK Ltd. was founded in the spring of 2015. Melissa Snover (35), an ambitious visionary and pacesetter, is its Managing Director. She’s enjoyed success for 12 years with her innovative and trendsetting concepts. At 23, Melissa Snover studied in Business Management and Political Science at the University of Colorado Boulder in the US. She also took part in the CU World Ambassador Exchange at the renowned Lancaster University in the UK. She subsequently founded Burton Mortgage Services. She sold this company in 2009 and switched to a career in the confectionery business. In 2010, she founded FTF Sweets Ltd., UK and created the world’s first all-natural, vegan and allergen-free fruit gummy under the Goody Good Stuff brand. Goody Good Candy is halal and kosher certified and has no allergens such as gluten, soya, nuts, eggs or dairy products. In 2013, she sold Goody Good Stuff to Coletta PLC. When she finally left the company in February 2015, Melissa Snover and her team had created a sales network of 20,000 outlets in more than 27 countries. As a result, Goody Good Stuff is one of the fastest growing brands in Europe. Melissa Snover joined the family-run company Katjes in March 2015 when Katjes Fassin UK Ltd. was founded. Together with Bastian Fassin, Director of Katjes Fassin UK Ltd., she has been driving the expansion of the Katjes brand forward by launching innovative ideas such as the Magic Candy Factory. As the Managing Director, over the next two years she’ll be in charge of marketing the latest product in the Katjes family – a 3D food printing concept called the “Magic Candy Factory”. Her success is based on her gut feeling for trends as well as a strong interest in progressive concepts. Melissa Snover believes that the future of the food industry lies in integrating health and wellness, natural ingredients and lifestyle with new technologies. Though American-born, she’s currently learning German for her job at Katjes.


Olivia Collins

Seeing how many excellent establishments and producers were not making the most of their PR and marketing opportunities drove Olivia Collins, Director of Those Two Girls PR, to set up the niche agency, Food PR and Marketing. Olivia has worked with Michelin starred restaurants, multi-award winning venues, high profile cookery schools and quality artisan producers from all over Ireland developing online strategies, PR campaigns and managing marketing budgets.    

Olivia's mission is to build sustainable great brands and profiles; To introduce online marketing mediums to effect profitability and to gain Irish food producers the recognition they deserve and their excellence acknowledged.

Gary is an early stage technology investor. As Director of NDRC LaunchPad, he specialises in helping new ventures to create value propositions that contribute to building repeatable and scalable business models. He has invested in over 100 startups during the last four years, including Soundwave, Boxever, Fieldaware, Logentries, Newswhip, Bizimply and VideoElephant. As an entrepreneur himself, he founded both Computer Gym And Vrising. With a background in the ICT sector, Gary brings a strong customer focus to the organisations with which he works, aligning technical solutions with customer problems. He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and holds an MBA from the Smurfit Graduate School of Business.



Kim Tighe

Kim Tighe is a Solution Leader in the Enterprise Services division with HPE Galway, where she has gained (10+ years) experience in solution architecture and design, with a highly successful track record in winning deals, achieving business growth and good margin for HPE. Her expertise and experience is in providing highly innovative IT outsourcing solutions for clients across EMEA in Manufacturing, Retail, Healthcare, Energy and Pharmaceutical. She works with new and existing clients of HPE building solutions to meet their business objectives and needs. She also previously worked as a research engineer in leading edge web technologies as a key industrial member partner with DERI and NUIG Galway. Kim was recently named as one of Ireland’s Talented 38 Technology Women 2015 by Technology Voice in conjunction with the Galway City Innovation District.


Paul Killoran
CEO and Founder, ExOrdo

Paul is an engineer by trade and a boot-strapper at heart. For the past 4 years, Ex Ordo has tripled year-on-year revenue and secured customers like the European Space Agency, Harvard Business School and the largest IT company in the world. Ex Ordo was awarded Enterprise Ireland’s CSF in 2013 and now employs 13 people. Paul is a co-founder of The PorterShed, Startup Galway, Galway Beta, CodeNinja and Bizcamp.

Keith Bohanna

Keith Bohanna is a passionate food consumer who co-founded Real Bread Ireland in 2015 and ran a series of 10 food producer events, under the Biabeag name, in Highbank Orchard, Kilkenny, Cooks Academy in Dublin and at Theatre of Food during Electric Picnic. He also ran Outstanding by Design, a one day conference on food branding and packaging. 

He also mentors a small number of food businesses in the South East and has delivered workshops for Bord Bia on online sales. He is a judge since 2011 with the IEDR Optimise Fund and has been a judge for the IIA NetVisionary Awards. 

His day job involves digital customer experience in Bank Of Ireland across websites, apps and social media. He has previously worked with businesses such as Eircom, Bord Gais, Enterprise Ireland and others to design and implement their digital strategies.

Gene Murphy
Entrepreneur in Residence @ Bank of Ireland

Gene loves Startups! He organises DublinBeta startup showcase, the startup meetup Drinkabout Dublin, Startup Weekend Dublin and previously the pre-accelerator Startup Next. Previously also a cofounder @startupireland & currently E.I.R. at Bank Of Ireland. His passion is working with tech startup entrepreneurs.


Philip Clapperton
Regional Sales Director

Originally from the UK Phil moved to Ireland in 2004 and has worked for Magnet Networks ever since. Magnet Networks are an award winning Broadband / Voice & Wi-Fi provider and Phil has worked in a variety of roles within the organisation and is primarily responsible for setting up both the customer services and sales teams respectively. Since Dec 2015, Phil has become the Regional Business Director for Magnet and is now responsible for creating a West of Ireland Business Development Team. The central hub for this team will be based in Galway and Phil and his family have recently made the move from Dublin to Galway and are quickly settling into the way of life in the West!

Maricka Burke Keogh
Head of Digital Marketing at Altocloud

Maricka is Head of Digital Marketing at Altocloud and founder of OMIG, a business network for the West of Ireland. Maricka was the winner of JCI Galway 'The Outstanding Young Person of the Year Award’ in 2013. She has also previously held positions with ad agency Atomic, IMS Marketing and Google.

Over the years, Maricka has worked with large corporate brands ranging from GlaxoSmithKline, PaddyPower, Ladbrokes, and Unilever to working with organisations such as Fine Gael and Leinster Rugby. 

Maricka, now based in Galway and is responsible for the Digital Marketing Strategy for Altocloud. Maricka's digital marketing specialities lie within the B2B sector for Medical Device, Engineering and ICTs (SaaS based models) sectors. 


Brendan Lally
Startup Advisor

Brendan has recently returned from many years abroad in the USA/UK and is an experienced technologist with roles ranging from CIO to Consultant roles . He has worked with Fortune 500 enterprises across many diverse industries and sectors. He has spent the last several years working with startups as advisor/mentor through to founder, CTO and adept at wearing many hats.
Returned recently from a years travel from Alaska to Argentina where he sampling many variations of ethnic food. Involved locally with PorterShed and GDIC and advisor to SaaS startups.


Oonagh Monahan
Founder - Alpha Omega Consultants

Author of “Money for Jam – the Essential Guide to Starting Your Own Small Food Business” which was published by Oaktree Press in 2013. Having previously worked with Kerry Foods and Mr. Kipling Cakes in Ireland and the UK as a food technologist, she set up Alpha Omega Consultants in 2008 focusing on small food producers. Oonagh is a Business Mentor with Enterprise Ireland and nine Local Enterprise Offices across the country. She lectures in EU and Irish Food Legislation at St. Angela’s College, Sligo. Oonagh also project manages technology transfer between academia and the food industry.  She develops funding proposals for the start-up, bio-tech, food and engineering sectors across the island of Ireland.  Oonagh has degrees in Biosciences, Food Science and Technology and in Business and Management and is a Certified Management Consultant


Rick Nassar

A complete Tech head, massive advocate of entrepreneurship and Startups with a big interest in rapid innovation with six years of startup experience under his belt.

The foundation of a good Startup begins with an awesome Team. Rick has been part of the Startup Weekend as both a participant and mentor. IoT (Internet of things) PhD student at UCD, his passion for technologies helped him found a new community pilot project that uses IoT as way to revive rural areas in the country.

Rose Barrett
Founder of Folio Digital

Rose has experience in technical project management, scrum and DSDM, content marketing and SEO and is working on making Folio Digital the solution to match the online presence of tourism businesses with their focused business goals and strategy.  With a background of managing bars and restaurants and in research, the love of serving people and measuring and researching is met through her work in analytics and the softer skills required to help client businesses to success.

Rose is taking charge of the social media for the Bia Lover food festival in Athenry ("Bia" is the Irish for food) that takes place in June.  The festival has been growing in popularity with amazing food producers and businesses coming together to showcase their produce.  The festival is expanding this year to include arts and crafts, supported by Athenry2020, and a food trail that will help support local charities and organisations.


Eimear Tyrrell
Head of Marketing at NUIG's Entrepreneur Society

A final year student of Marketing in NUI Galway with a passion for entrepreneurship and startups. In 2015, Eimear won the Galway startup weekend and this was a pivotal moment in her career in business. Being Head of Marketing at NUIG's Entrepreneur society is a role she takes great pride in as it is the fastest growing society on campus. They host events with entrepreneurs and industry professionals in order to spread entrepreneurship and knowledge throughout the University. Such free events include a sales courses, stocks course, marketing academy, networking breakfasts, and charity events. She has been involved running NUIG’s Student Enterprise Awards 2016. During University she has completed digital marketing plans for local food businesses and understand the fast paced environment in which marketing has become along with the constant need to adapt to new technologies. She currently works in marketing activations representing various food and drink brands in assisting to tell their brand story. Recently she has worked as a social media intern in Food PR & Marketing where she was involved in the two day symposium Food on the Edge. Eimear’s biggest passions in life include food culture, sustainability, homebrewing and technology.



Craig Brown
Founder at Interview Rocket

Craig is the founder and majority shareholder of Interview Rocket, a video interviewing service replacing first round interviews normally conducted by phone. Interview Rocket eliminates scheduling conflicts and provides employers with better insight into candidates’ capabilities earlier in the hiring process. Having received in excess of $250,000 in investment in 2012, Interview Rocket now offers a full range of services surrounding its core technology. Interview Rocket has clients globally, including Amazon Japan and Admiral Insurance UK. Craig’s areas of expertise include product ideation and formulation, process optimization, and sales. He has previously been involved in a number of industries, including advanced manufacturing, transportation, business development consulting, and HR. While Craig is originally from Nova Scotia, he has also lived and worked in France, Japan and the UK. Craig has an undergraduate degree in literature from Acadia, and an MBA from Kingston University in the UK, and can speak French and basic Japanese. Craig is married with three children.


Mark White
Founder / CEO Codacast

Mark is a native of Monkstown in Dublin. He received his undergraduate degree in Software Engineering from Athlone Institute of Technology in 2002. He spent a number of years working as a C# Developer in the private sector before deciding to undertake a masters in Information Technology at NUI Galway. His research resulted in a new algorithm to reduce Data Centre Energy Consumption and has since been published. He founded Codacast in April 2015. The company is based in Galway, providing Smart QR Code Management Software for clients from a variety of business sectors. Codacast has received numerous awards and accolades including finalist in 2 categories of The Irish Web Awards for 2015. 


Mícheál Reilly
CEO/CTO at Educated Machine

Mícheál is an engineer who has been involved in running a wide variety of different businesses for the past 10 years. He has run his own online store, traded currencies, run an IT service company and has tutored both adults and children in coding. For now though he works with his team creating websites and mobile apps and teaching people how to code and blog. Currently he runs courses in web development, app development and wordpress at Educated Machine. He plans to eventual build spaceships.
