Ben Sykes
Product Designer + Experience Strategist - Since '95

Ben Sykes is a dev / design hybrid with a focus on interaction (IxD), user experience (UX) and behavior design. He has always had a strong desire to tell stories, and started out in Hollywood working in TV & film on such projects as Melrose Place, American Beauty, and Murder In The First.

In the mid 1990’s, Ben started a web design consultancy and worked on a variety of projects with  Warner Brothers Music, Artisan Entertainment, Digital Evolution just to name a few.

In 2003, he joined the Marine Corps Reserves and was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon his return, he continued to design and develop with such companies as :, American Idol Underground, NSA, NASA, & Oracle.

More recently, Ben has worked with  Microsoft, where he led multiple UX initiatives; Cisco where he managed and built the Irish UX team and helped integrate WebEx / CUPC; and Google where he was a lead designer on the AdWords team and was instrumental in the creation of multiple features such as the DisplayTargeting Tab, Alerts, and Google Help. He then went on to lead the design of the big data visualization of self-service dashboards backed by the Google Data Warehouse.

Ben currently serves as a User Experience Design Advisor to multiple start-ups and has been designing & facilitating the curriculum for the Apprentice Program and Job Search Standup for General Assembly’s UX Design Immersive students as well as teaching Interaction Design at San Francisco State University.

2010-2011: Research Fellow in Prof. Heymans PReCISE research centre, Computer Science department, Namur University.
2006-2010: PhD in computer science, graduated with grade “Outstanding” under Leon van der Torre, Luxembourg University, ICR group.
3-year project with the city of Luxembourg on the topic of conviviality in artificial social systems based on a actual use cases provided by the city of Luxembourg.
1999-1994: Master of Science in Computer Science in New York University under Prof. Dr. Jack Schwartz. Research assistant at NYU Media Lab.

Nicolas Henckes
Secretary general of Union des Entreprises Luxembourgeoises

After starting as an M&A attorney with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in Paris, Nicolas came back to Luxembourg where he became the PA to the Governor of the Luxembourg Central Bank. As of 2005, he managed the Association momentanée IC / VB with regard to the public market of the Luxembourg Official Journal. On this basis, he created Legitech, the Luxembourg legal publisher of reference, in early 2006 for the same shareholders. He has reached 3rd position at the 2011 Creative Young Entrepreneur Luxembourg contest for this creation and successful launch. Since September 2013, Nicolas is the secretary general of the Luxembourg Employers' association, representing Luxembourg companies' interests in negotiations with the government and the trade unions. 
Nicolas graduated from HEC Paris, before obtaining a graduate degree (D.E.S.S.) in Business Law from the University Paris XI Law school. He also obtained the CEMS MIM awarded by the European leading business schools.

Michele Gallo
Advisor, Directorate of New Technologies, Luxembourg Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade

Michele is an advisor at the Luxembourg Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade where he is in charge of public funding for young innovative enterprises and of the incubation initiatives. After starting his career in London with Sardis Capital, a boutique investment bank focused on M&A and private placements within the High Tech sector, he joined the Corporate Finance Advisory team of KPMG in Luxembourg, where he specialised on company valuations. Before joining the Ministry of Economy Michele worked for Luxinnovation, Luxembourg’s National Agency for Innovation, where he coordinated the start-ups support department . Michele holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London and a Master in European Business from ESCP Europe in Paris.

Patxi Avila-Kildal
Senior Product Manager at Amazon

Patxi is a Senior Product Manager at Amazon, with extensive experience in launching new projects. Before that, he did his MBA at London Business School, he set up an online publishing company and worked at Google in Mountain View. He is originally from Barcelona, and has lived in Paris, the Bay Area, London and Luxembourg.

Coaches and Mentors

Digambal Nayagum
Avocat à la Cour (Barreau du Luxembourg)

Digambal is a member of the Luxembourg bar since 2011 and is practising at AS AVOCATS, where she initially started as a legal counsel in 2009.

She also leads the India desk at AS AVOCATS, and has previously lectured at the University of Luxembourg.

She has a Bachelor in Law and Management from the University of Mauritius, a Master in Business Law with a specialisation in International Commercial Law from University of Nancy II, France.

Digambal’s main areas of practice are : corporate law, intellectual property law, labour law, civil and contract law.

She is participating for the third time as a legal coach at the Startup Weekend. She has the desire to assist and support start-ups by creating the proper legal framework right in the beginning, in order to ensure that the start-up grows into a fully developped company and that business expands.

Laurent Kratz
Entrepreneur and Investor

Internet Entrepreneur, IT Professional services background. Knowledge in innovative business models, business mutations.Specialties: Free software, Intellectual property, Internet strategy

Philippe Papanastassiou
Investor, business developer, tech enthusiast and INSEAD MBA

Philippe brings close to a decade of experience in TMT and professional services. He started his career in Business Intelligence at MACH, the leading roaming clearing house. After a year, he was promoted to sales & account manager with responsibility for the company’s largest customer. During that time, he not only won new clients but also renewed framework agreements and developed new products and services. More recently, he was a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group and worked with clients in Energy, Consumer Electronics and Financial Services on a number of topics such as strategy, marketing and organization. He now leads Business and Customer Development efforts for TaDaweb.
Philippe holds an MSc from Solvay Business School and an MBA from INSEAD, focusing on corporate finance, venture capital and private equity. He also completed an MBA exchange with the Wharton School in Philadelphia, USA and a week-long entrepreneurship seminar in Silicon Valley.

Denis Avrilionis

I am an entrepreneur in the software industry. My background is computer science and software engineering. I am passionate about people willing to created new businesses. I have the pleasure to advise teams in bootstrapping their business ideas.

Nicolas Valaize
Startup support & National funding services at Luxinnovation

Nicolas participated to a previous edition of the Luxembourg Startup Weekend and quitted his job one week later.
