1. What is Startup Weekend?
The Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event where individuals from different spheres of interest and expertise come together to share their ideas and evolve them in a startup concept. They do this organized in teams, and with the help of the mentors develop a product or a business model in a single weekend. In the end, the teams present their ideas in front of a committee of experts, the best teams get valuable prizes and surprises.
2. Is this event for me?
The participants usually come from the areas of programming, design, marketing, finance, and law, but if you come from a different field that is a good thing too. Whether you have some experience in the area of entrepreneurship, or you don’t, this is a great opportunity for you to gain some more, as well as network, learn from the experiences of others and have a lot of fun while doing it. If this sounds like an interesting idea, then Startup Weekend Skopje is just the event for you!
3. Can I come alone or do I need a team?
The choice is yours: you can sign up with a team, or alone. You also need to know that if your idea (or your team’s idea) doesn’t get picked after the presentation round, you will need to join one of the other teams. The goal of the voting is to simply pick the ideas which have the highest likelihood of success, and the teams to be highly diversified in terms of abilities and prior knowledge of the members.
To conclude, whether you come alone or with a team; whether your idea is picked, or you join another team, you will have countless opportunities to contribute with your whole potential to the realization of something amazing, in just 54 hours.
4. How do I sign up?
You can save your spot and get your ticket here. If you don’t have PayPal and have trouble setting it up, contact us and we will help you out.
5. How much does a ticket cost?
The tickets will cost 15€ (12€ if you are a student)
The price includes food and beverages during the event. The venue (Innofeit) has powerful wifi, so you don’t have to worry about that either.
6. Why do I need to pay to participate in the event?
We ask our participants to pay the small participation fee mainly for the following two reasons:
- This is a way to cover part of the cost for organizing the event (the rest will be covered by sponsors).
- It serves as an assurance that those that sign up do so with interest and will show up on the day of the event.
7. What do I need to bring to the event?
- a laptop and a charger
- business cards (bring as many as you can, this is a great opportunity to network)
- everything you think you will need for 3 days of work and potentially not returning home
- positive energy and motivation
8. Do I need to prepare before the event?
We advise you to do some research about useful tools and techniques which you can use in creating your startup, as well as research on the latest innovative startup solutions (worldwide). There is a database on the following link http://www.startupweekend.org/attendees/resources which can help you get started.
You can also make sure to get plenty of sleep in the days before Startup Weekend, as you might not have to much time to rest during the event.
9. How will the ideas be presented?
At the beginning of the event, those that want to share their ideas and submit them to voting are going to have to present them in 60 seconds. In just one minute the crowd needs to understand the concept and be convinced to vote for it, but also, the idea needs to attract a team from other participants who will work on developing it. This is why you are going to need to do a lot of research, as well as practice your speech (even in front of the mirror)
10. Do I need to work 54 hours without a break?
Of course not. Sometimes the teams decide to work only during Friday or Saturday night, but this is also not mandatory, nor expected. Still, because the time period is so short, the more ambitious teams are likely to want to use all the time they can get on developing their ideas, so the venue where Startup Weekend Skopje will take place will be open overnight for those that wish to use it.
