Launch Your idea in 54 hours

The third Startup Weekend in Iskandar Puteri!

Startup Weekends are 54-hour events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practising LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.

The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education. Whether you are looking for feedback on an idea, a co-founder, specific skill sets, or a team to help you execute, Startup Weekends are the perfect environment in which to test your idea and take the first steps towards launching your own startup.

Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely!

Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

What will you get from attending?
- Prize up to RM10,000.00 worth of cash prize to be won!
- $3,000 worth of credits from Google For Startups
- A free .co domain for 1 year & lots of awesome SWAGS
- Awesome coaching by industry leaders from JB, KL & Singapore
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole weekend, basically all meals are taken care of!
- A new network of developer, designer & entrepreneur friends that are also excited about entrepreneurship in Johor
- Opportunity to get incubated by StartupJohor

What will you get if you win?
- 2 Winners, 1 Crowd Choice & 1 High potential team with up to RM10,000 worth of cash prize.
- Selected for incubation program with StartupJohor at Iskandar Space.
- Mentoring support from local dedicated mentors from the StartupJohor Community

Cheong Hong Lua
SGshop Malaysia, Managing Director

I pursued my studies in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. During my studies in NTU, I joined Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) under our school internship program. In 2010, together with my brother, Cheong Rui (Ray), we won finalist award in Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition.

The life in Singapore has been an eye-opener to me. At the right time and the right place, Singapore government have been doing the right thing continuously, implementing the right policy. Singapore is a beautiful city state forged under political and social stability for decades. The country has emerged into the hub of south-east Asia in areas such as finance, healthcare, education, and logistic. Besides, the city state is the best livable city in Asia for the high net worth, with a dynamic economic environment and competitive workforce. The island is connected globally and open to innovative ideas.

With the experience that I gained in the neighbour country, I decided to come back and serve my homeland, Johor state of Malaysia. In 2014, together with Ray and my partners, I co-founded SGshop Malaysia e-commerce platform (www.sgshop.com.my). The platform serves as an international shopping gateway for local consumers, in purchasing products overseas.

In 2015, together with Ray and my teammates, with support from Johor State Exco, I founded Kelab Duta Muafakat Johor (Envoy of Harmony Johor). It is a non-profitable organization (NPO), which is in collaboration with Johor state government. It serves as a bridge between the state government and youth community in Johor.

In 2017, I stepped down as the founding president from Kelab Duta Muafakat Johor. In 2017 H2, SGshop Malaysia is relocated to Medini City, Iskandar Malaysia.
