Becoming Startup Ready in One Weekend!

Petrosains together with KakiDIY and supported by Google for Education and MaGIC, are excited to host a Startup Weekend KL Edutech Edition from 4th to 6th August 2017. The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education. We will be welcoming entrepreneurs, educators, and tech enablers to converge on developing an edutech enterprise or an edutech solution (products or services).

Participants create working startups during the event and are able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. All teams will get to hear talks by industry leaders and receive valuable feedback from local entrepreneurials.  We look forward to see you there!

Dr. Daniel Loy
Director, Centre of Learning & Innovation, Petrosains

Dr. Daniel Loy is currently the Director of the Centre of Learning & Innovation, Petrosains which looks at innovative approaches to STEM education while leading free choice learning research. Through the lens of STEM, Petrosains also supports entrepreneurship development and is a recipient of the Social Enterprise Patron under the Amplify Awards by MaGIC, and is a current mentor of MaGIC’s Global Accelerator Programme.

Daniel has a PhD in the field of Informal Science Education, with a Masters degree in Online Education and a Bachelors in Media Innovation. Prior to his current role at Petrosains, Daniel was the Vice President of Social Innovation at Agensi Inovasi Malaysia. Doing good he believes should be the default mantra for all businesses, and that doing good is not mutually exclusive to profitability. Daniel also dabbles in travel blogging and photography in his free time.

Izwan Ibrahim
Chief Operating Officer, PETRONAS ICT

Izwan is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of PETRONAS ICT Sdn. Bhd since 2013. An engineer by training, Izwan is a PETRONAS scholar who graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York with B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.Sc. in Information Technology.   Izwan’s entry into the oil & gas industry started in 2001 when he joined PETRONAS Carigali (Sarawak Operations) as a System Analyst. Since then, he has been with several companies within the PETRONAS Group. In this span of 16 years, prior to his appointment as COO, Izwan has held leadership roles as the Head of Managed Services and General Manager in PETRONAS ICT Sdn Bhd. His work experience covered areas involving project management, systems development, technical support, client relationship, business development and management.   

Besides work, Izwan is passionate about Education. He is presently a member of the Board of Trustee for Universiti Malaysia Pahang and he also contributes his time as an Industry Advisory Panel member for Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and Asia Pacific University (APU).

Ridwan Othman
Head & Vice President, Advanced Global Institute of Learning Excellence (AGILE)

Ridwan is currently the Vice President of the Advanced Global Institute of Learning Excellence (AGILE) at the Taylors Education Group (TEG) which comprises of more than 13 different educational institutions (K12 to University) in Malaysia and Singapore. Apart from heading AGILE, Ridwan also spearheads various strategic initiatives in areas of pedagogy, teaching competencies and learning technology innovations, especially focusing on learning analytics, online and blended learning, learning space design and holistic education approaches.

With more than 18 years in the education, eLearning and educational technology industry, Ridwan is both an educator and learning technologist at heart. As a learning designer and learning technologist for more than 15 years, he also knows the technical side of implementing learning tools to enhance learning and teaching. He has trained more than 1000 teachers in K-12, Higher Education and the corporate sector on many aspects of learner-centered pedagogical approaches and on learning technology solutions.

Yusuf Jaffar
Program Consultant, MaGIC

Yusuf Jaffar is a consultant with MaGIC, currently working on its social enterprise certification and procurement programme. He also heads Social Enterprise Ventures (SEV), a venture capital management company that invests in promising social enterprises, or businesses that maximise social impact alongside profits. In his spare time, Yusuf trains, advises and mentors aspiring social entrepreneurs.

Alan Teng
Head of Digital Innovation Strategy & Architecture, PETRONAS ICT

Alan is the Head for Digital Innovation, Strategy & Architecture at PETRONAS Group ICT. Known for being strategically forward-looking and creatively collaborative, Alan currently focuses on disruptive technologies and start up culture that enables digital innovation in the Enterprise. He believes in the future of a digital-technology driven PETRONAS and therefore passionately challenges conventions and offers support to ensure its success.

Alan has over 20 years ICT experience with a background in Enterprise Architecture and Business Development. Alan is TOGAF 9.1 and COBIT 5 certified and he has also recently completed the Harvard Business School Executive Program for Competing on Business Analytics & Big Data. 
Alan graduated with an honours degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.

Alex Lim
Co-founder, MYReaders

Alex is a Co-Founder of MYReaders, an organisation aimed at providing a solution to illiteracy amongst high-risk youths by training community leaders and education enablers to administer literacy-based interventions. He was previously a teacher in Sungai Petani. Believing that students can do more than merely receive information from adults, he rallied his students to mentor younger students in his school to read and in doing the same, grow student leaders.

Alex graduated with an LLB(Hons) from University of London and is an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. He is now working with the Ministry of Education in Performance & Delivery Unit (PADU).

Amelia Tan
Co-founder, 100% Project

As an investment banker turned social entrepreneur, Amelia has always believed that education is the key to solving the world’s many problems. After leaving RHB Investment Bank, she began her journey in education in Teach For Malaysia, working as a fundraiser for the organisation. This eventually led her to starting 100% Project, a crowdfunding platform that helps teachers provide the best learning experience for their students.

Amelia is passionate about harnessing the power of technology to provide equal access to quality education for every child. She also enjoys community building and telling stories.

Dr. Amir A Samad
Head, Common Support Services, PETRONAS ICT

Dr. Amir has been in the IT industry for the past 23 years. He was a PETRONAS scholar and upon graduation, his first job was to connect PETRONAS to the Internet. Since then, he has been involved mostly in software design and development work. Most recently, he spent the past 10 years in Microsoft as a consultant, before re-joining PETRONAS ICT.

Dr. Amir is now with the operations team, where some of his portfolio cover services such as Email, Lync, Active Directory, Windows Servers, and Printing services. He believes that one should never be afraid to fail and constantly challenge the status quo to keep getting better.

Andrew Yong
Co-founder, 100% Project

A huge advocate for education, Andrew is the co-founder of 100% Project, a crowdfunding platform that empowers teachers to provide the best learning experience for their kids. He believes that education is society's collective responsibility and that we can use the power of technology and the internet to connect the public to classrooms in need.  

Andrew is an inventor at heart - he had co-founded a start-up in Australia after graduating with law and economics degrees at the University of New South Wales. He has spent years ever since building awesome products for the enterprise. Andrew has an eclectic range of industry expertise - from consulting to organisations like CIMB, PwC and Reserve Bank of Australia, to being a full-stack programmer himself. Having grown up in Sydney, Andrew recently came back to Malaysia looking for adventure and ways to contribute to the country of his birth.

Angeline Chin
Head of Corporate Citizenship for Asia Pacific, Credit Suisse

Angeline's role as the Head of Corporate Citizenship in Asia Pacific for Credit Suisse is to drive strategic giving and staff engagement with the communities across13 countries in this region, focusing on children, youth and education. She plays an important role in designing the programs with partners and communicating Credit Suisse's philanthropic efforts both internally and externally.

Angeline brings over 20 years of experience from the private sector, NGOs and government. She started her career as a regulator with the Securities Commission Malaysia and has been involved in the financial services sector throughout her career.  Prior to joining Credit Suisse, she was Chief Executive Officer at Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong for 7 years. Angeline was also a Board member at the Hong Kong Chapter of Variety Children’s Charity. She is legally trained and holds a Master in Law from City University Hong Kong and a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.  She is a Harvard Mason fellow.

Anupam Chatterjee
Founder & CEO, CEMPIA

Anupam Chatterjee is the Founder and CEO of CEMPIA, TheDecisionLabs, a customer experience management platform with embedded analytics. Anupam is in charge of the Business of CEMPIA and growing it in Malaysia and ASEAN.  Anupam has been in the field of Business Innovation , Analytics Consulting and Product development for last 13 years. Anupam holds a bachelors degree in Economics from Presidency College, University of Calcutta and an MS in Quantitative Economics from Indian Statistical Institute. He also holds an MBA from HEC Paris and MIT Sloan (IEP) with specialisation in strategy from Harvard Business School.

He is passionate about new ideas, innovation and startups. In his free time he goes for long walks or movies. Anupam loves traveling and meeting new people.

April Khor
Sunway iLabs

After a few years as a practising lawyer, April decided to join an agency to build and contribute to the social entrepreneurship ecosystem in Malaysia. Now, she is in Sunway iLabs fostering the entrepreneurship culture in Sunway University.

Chan Teck Keng
CEO, LH Learning Group

Teck Seng is the Project Manager for the Turbo Charge Learning School Programme, a programme to inspire students achieve more by using advance accelerated learning skills. He believes that the secret to success is a dedication to effective learning, and everyone should continuously learn and grow.

Teck Keng holds a first class honours, majoring in Biomedical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is also a Licensed Financial Planner and was one of the lucky few to have been a part of the financial fast track programme in 2009 named “Financial Sector Talent Enrichment Programme” (FSTEP), a brain child of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and organised by Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia (IBBM). 

Chelsey Lepage
Innovation Head, UNICEF Malaysia

Chelsey is part of UNICEF’s global innovation team, and has worked with organizations and young people across 4 continents to help find new ways to solve problems that impact children. Her experience draws from the areas of human-centred design, social enterprise development, renewable energy distribution, mobile information systems, youth participation and human rights advocacy.    

Ask her about universal design, inclusion of children with disabilities, co-creating with children and young people, problem-solving (and music!).

Denise Teoh
Partnerships, FrogAsia Sdn. Bhd.

Denise has led various partnership portfolios with local and international education partners over the past three years. At FrogAsia, she has been extensively involved in the development of opportunities for the company’s products and services to increase on-ground awareness, building online connections with stakeholders through social media platforms, and securing sponsorships for company initiatives.

She continues to develop strategic plans to enhance the use of technology and pedagogy in schools. This is aligned with FrogAsia’s vision to equip every student, regardless of background or location, with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in the 21st century.

Edmond Yap
Co-founder, EduNation

Edmond has spent large portions of his life wondering “what am I doing?”. He was a civil engineer, salesman, soft skills trainer and now, a social entrepreneur. His last effort has seen him create the website where he is helping 100,000 Malaysian students monthly. With 6000 videos, EduNation is Asia’s largest free educational resource. He believes that life is too short to do meaningless work and that we can make the world a better place.

Edmond is currently working on his latest project in starting up a cutting edge school called KITA, designed to help improve public education for every Malaysian child.

Hui Yik Seong
Founder, Direct Lending

Yik Seong is the Founder of Direct Lending, an online personal lending platform that provides a faster, simpler, safer and more affordable borrowing experience for consumers. He has over 15 years of banking, capital market and accounting experience in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and London. 

Before starting Direct Lending, he was a Director with Barclays Investment Bank (Debt Capital Market team), where he successfully raised over USD40 billion of financing for banks, insurance companies and corporates across Asia and Europe. Yik Seong is a CFA Charterholder and a qualified accountant. 

Josh Teng
Chief Executive Officer, NEXT Academy

Josh founded NEXT Academy to empower people to pursue careers in technology and marketing. His expertise and interest is in web development and artificial intelligence. His vision is to see NEXT Academy play a pivotal role in growing Southeast Asia into a formidable technology hub in the world, where cutting edge research is conducted and highly innovative companies are built. In addition, through the development of talent at NEXT Academy, he hopes to attract more tech companies from across the world to establish engineering offices in Southeast Asia and thus raising the average salaries of tech talent in the region.

Prior to NEXT Academy, Josh co-founded an enterprise customer support software company, primarily for banks, and was invested by the Singapore government.

Lee Wei Chee
Founder, CheQQme

A first class graduate in Information Technology from Coventry University, Wei Chee started experimenting with computers since the 1980s when he help digitized his father’s O-level exam papers, who was a teacher in Melaka. He’s deeply hands on, interested in creative games and the virtual world.

He co-developed the world's first MMOG on feature (low-end Nokia) phones in the late 1990s, and one of the first virtual world platform in the early 2000s. He believes that the Internet can be a lot more immersive, connecting Consumers and Merchants, in delivering seamless consumer experience. This brought him to him to found his current start-up, CheQQme, a gamified mobile marketing platform that converts online users traffic to walk-in in-store customers. During his free time, Wei Chee enjoy a rigorous basketball game and also a quiet meditation time.

Lee Xin
Tech Lead, CollectCo

Early in his career after graduating from UNSW Sydney, Lee Xin started as a full-stack developer in Sime Darby and was later on assigned as a solution architect to design and implement innovative IT solutions for the company. With a burning passion for technology, entrepreneurship and running a business, he decided to pursue an exciting opportunity in a fledging startup.

Armed with 7 years of experience in web and mobile development, Lee Xin is currently the Technology Lead for CollectCo, a startup which converts brick and mortar stores into “mini post offices”, so that people like you and me can send, collect and return parcels at any convenient location and time. Ultimately, what drives him forward is the passion to leverage technology to solve people’s problems.

Mellissa Lee
Head, GetResponse Malaysia

Mellissa is currently the Head of GetResponse Malaysia, a marketing automation and email marketing cloud-based platform for small and large businesses. Mellissa has always been very involved in the start-up community, and has a lot of experience running and managing start-ups. She was a part of the original founding team of ZALORA Malaysia managing Operations & Production, Country Manager for KakaoTalk Malaysia, and the GM of Marketing for KFIT, coordinating marketing across 10 cities in Asia Pacific. 

She has also founded her own start-up which was eventually acquired. She strongly believes in making education accessible to all.

Nigel Sim
Co-founder, Chumbaka

Nigel was an English teacher in Sekinchan and is currently lecturing at Sunway College. He is passionate about Innovation and Design Thinking, and is experienced in coaching students in innovation related competitions. His students have gone on to win awards across state, national and international levels. This includes the Best Innovation Award for secondary category at the Malaysian Young Inventors Exhibition 2016. 4 of his students from Sekinchan made headlines when they won a trip to Silicon Valley in December last year, after going through two accelerator camps organised by MDEC under their #mydigitalmaker Global Exchange programme.

Building on his passion, Nigel 
Co-founded Chumbaka and is a sought after trainer on the 21st Century Project Based Teaching & Learning. He was a speaker for  Yayasan Amir Trust School Conference in 2015 and Teach for All Global Teaching Summit in Miri in 2016.

Phang Jo Yee
Marketing & Community Manager, FutureLab

Phang has been in the start-up scene for over 3 years. She spearheaded a game development company and help grew a 3 man team to a studio with 7 full timers and over 30 interns. With a strong passion for branding and marketing, Phang went on to join a social start-up as the Marketing & Community Manager, overseeing a community of over 1,000 members from 37 different countries. On top of that, she is highly involved in online mentoring on and community building for Google Business Group Malaysia.

Dr. Renard Siew
Climate Change Advisor, CENT-GPS

Renard is a Climate Change Advisor for CENT-GPS and is a member of the World Economic Forum Expert Network. Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral teaching fellow and a researcher at the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) where he has worked on a number of portfolios including sustainability/ integrated reporting, ESG integration, socially responsible investment (across different asset classes: equities, infrastructure and property/real estate), climate change and sustainable construction for the building/infrastructure sector. Renard is a graduate of Cambridge University and UNSW. In 2013, he was selected as one of 15 international scholars to attend the PhD Academy at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). He has published in many international refereed journals. In 2014, he won a Highly Commended Paper award by the Emerald Literati Network and was a nominee for the Individual Leadership in Sustainability Infrastructure Award.

He was the recipient of the Yayasan Sime Darby Scholarship, Cambridge Bursary Scholarship, ARG Hermes Scholarship, Brookfield Multiplex Engineering Management Prize and the Australian Conferences Management Education for Engineers Award among others. He was nominated Top 10 for the Shell Academic Excellence Award and the International Postgraduate Student of the Year Award by CISA for outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievements. For his work in sustainability, he was also recently named as one of Malaysia's Top 10 Most Inspiring Green Warriors.

Professionally, Renard is a Green Star Accredited Professional (Design & As-Built). He serves as an industry working group member for the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and is a Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure (SuRe) Stakeholder Council member.

Richard Gan
General Manager, Sunrise Enrichment Centre

Richard is an education entrepreneur who is passionate about making a positive impact and change in the present education system to becoming better, supporting the growth and development of the future generations. 

Sataksi Chatterjee
Director, CEMPIA

Dr Sataksi Chatterjee is the Director of CEMPIA, TheDecisionLabs, a customer experience management platform with embedded analytics . Dr Sataksi's primary interests are in medical care , medical innovation and research. She has authored numerous medical papers. Dr Sataksi holds an MS in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) from Bangalore Medical College and is the Head and Neck Oncology Fellow from RGHUS. When she is not doing Cancer surgery, she loves drawing, enjoys traveling and is now trying her hands in guitar.

Sotheeswari Somasundram
Senior Lecturer, Taylor's University

Sotheeswari is a dedicated and passionate individual who firmly believes that good quality higher education can truly transform people's lives and benefit society and businesses at large. She has 20 years of experience in higher education and extensive experience in curriculum design, new programme creation, teaching and was also a Head and Dean of a Business School. She initiated the design and development of an entrepreneurial education module at Taylor’s University. This course has produced students’ start-ups with teams taking their business ideas beyond the classroom.

In her previous role as the Dean of the Business School at INTI International College Subang, 
Sotheeswari doubled the enrollment numbers to more than 2,000 students and was a co-leader in the design of a strategic Graduate Talent Programme that propelled the institution to achieve the graduate employability rates of 96% within 2 years from 70%. She lead the faculty to become a leading school in the execution of real projects from the industry and various strategic immersion programmes with over 30 employers. 

Tan Yee Siang
Lead Developer, MaGIC

Yee Siang is a full stack developer with wide range of skillset, building software since y2k. He build medium to large scale web application using LAMP or mobile app with Corona SDK/phonegap/native Android. He also lectures in The One Academy, teaching design student on using open source technology such as Processing and Arduino for interactive multimedia.  His previous clients including Bank Negara Malaysia, Iskandar Malaysia, Sunway University, KVC, HTC & Continental Group. He is currently a Lead Developer in MaGIC.

Tiffany Marie Mervin
Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs Lead, IBM

Tiffany Mervin is IBM's Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs Lead for Malaysia. In this role, she seeks to identify and act upon opportunities to employ IBM's technology and expertise to societal challenges across key strategic areas including education, health, and community. Over the course of her career, Tiffany has had the opportunity to engineer, consult on and scale programs to improve educational opportunities for a range of groups from students disadvantaged by rural locations to differently abled students as well as plugging the gap of needs amongst educators.

Tiffany is passionate about the use of technology to innovate, disrupt and create transformative social change.

Wan Dazriq
CEO and Co-Founder, PurpoSE

Wan Dazriq is currently the Founder & CEO of PurpoSE Malaysia, a private driven entity that aims to venture build high potential and scalable social enterprises in Malaysia. He manages initiatives as well as strategic engagements and helps forge collaborations that focus on social entrepreneurship development and ecosystem building efforts.
Previously, Dazriq leads the Malaysia's Social Inclusion & Vibrant Entrepreneurship (MasSIVE), a strategic unit under the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) that aims to create social impact through entrepreneurship related initiatives. Dazriq has served several portfolios under MaGIC. He was the MaGIC Social Entrepreneurship Program Manager and went on to head the strategic initiatives portfolio with the ASEAN Centre of Entrepreneurship prior to MasSIVE.
He specialises in areas of change and transformation with years of experience in strategy, execution and implementation for large scale nation building initiatives and transformation projects with various multinational companies.

Lalitha Wemel
Regional Manager, Asia Pacific

Lalitha Wemel is a community architect based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is incredibly passionate about fostering entrepreneurship, grassroots leadership, and strong communities. Lalitha has been involved in various startup projects and communities for the better part of the last decade, both in and out of Malaysia. She has a deep love for eloquent minds, adventure, coffee, and travel. She is currently the Regional Manager for Techstars Startup Programs across South East Asia and Oceania, where she works with amazing community leaders to strengthen and empower their local startup ecosystem.
