What is Startup Weekend?
A Not For Profit event. A Startup Weekend is a weekend-long, hands-on fun experience where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable and get the full startup experience themselves. Around half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds. On Sunday evening they meet the judges and selected investors with their ideas.

What do I do?
Bring an idea, bring some skills, meet some new people, get support from great mentors, get free food and free drink for a whole weekend and then go on to build some cool new businesses.

What is Malta Startup Weekend?
Its an experience you’ll never forget. From Friday to Sunday techies, marketers & entrepreneurs Work in a newly formed team to convert an idea into an operating viable business.

Who should attend?
Anyone who ❤ the process of creating a new product or service and turning it into a business OR wants to learn how to do that. Attendees include business development, programmers, marketers, designers, lawyers, team builders, entrepreneurs and writers. We will offer a small number of special discount Early Bird tickets. But once they are gone, they are gone go good and the tickets are back up to FULL price so please please please... did we say please... get your tickets early.

Why should I attend?
Are you kidding? What is your idea worth if you don't try it out. So the BIG reason to attend is to TRY out your ideas for real and stop wasting valuable time pondering them. Also another reason is to become inspired, to forge a whole series of lasting friendships, to seek out and find your co-founders & employees, to learn some new tools & methodologies, to practice some new skills and to experience that unique sense of accomplishment when you build a working team around your idea. Oh yes and to have some fun too. Why not?

What can I expect?

Attendees meet Friday at 6:30p and start the startup weekend format. After a dinner and some swift inspiring presentations, you’ll go through six steps to build a new business by Sunday at 5pm:

How do I sign up?
Register on our Eventbrite sign up page (the registration link will be available soon).
If you fit multiple categories, pick your strongest for now. You will not be restricted to this role during the weekend. If you don’t know which to pick, select Non-Technical for now.

David Vella
Founder & CEO of Altaro Software

David has led Altaro Software since the company was founded in 2009. Before Altaro, David spent 11 years at GFI Software with the last position being Director of Product Management. At GFI Software he was responsible for the product management of GFI's product lines. Other responsibilities while at GFI Software included market/sales analysis, acquisitions and building OEM relationships with GFI's OEM partners. David joined GFI when it had less than 15 employees and left when GFI Software had over 200 employees worldwide.


Sarah Kennard
Public relations and communications specialist

Sarah has been working as a public relations and communications consultant for almost twenty years building, developing and managing the public relations division with leading marketing communications agency MPS Ltd. In her capacity as a communication specialist, Sarah has acted as an intermediary between the general public and numerous local and international organizations, conceiving and implementing integrated communication campaigns on behalf of the company’s clients. Sarah was also the editor for the Air Malta In flight magazine for the past seven years.


Anthony Grech
Management at V&A Investments

Anthony Grech has held various senior positions in the finance industry. In London Anthony was involved in the valuation of multiple cross boarder private equity and M&A transactions. He also valued stock options for FTSE listed companies and his insights on capital markets developments and publicly listed equities were widely followed by the financial media, including Bloomberg and the Financial Times. Anthony is currently managing the operations of V&A Investments Limited, the corporate venture capital arm of Alf Mizzi & Sons and Gasan Group. V&A Investments invests in early stage technology start-ups, predominantly at the seed and round 1 phase.

Michael Sturm is an expert in opening new revenue opportunities and to expand business into new markets. Don Ross

During the past 27+ years, Don has worked in a variety of IT management roles including 14 years as Managing Partner & Technical Director with German new economy start-up Six Offene Systeme, as Managing Director and CTO of digital marketing leader MRM WorldWide,  in senior global support and service management positions with American software companies PGP and Symantec, and most recently as Director of Cloud Consulting - EMEA for Citrix. Don is passionate about building high-performing international software service and consulting teams, and strategies... as well as mentoring managers across a broad range of management responsibilities including people, key-account, and performance management. Living and breathing the challenges of the FinTech sector since 2004, for the last >9 years I have been also actively involved in the global startup ecosystem as a startup co-founder, acceleration program manager, mentor/coach and educator. I have been collaborating with several institutions – from startup incubators and accelerators to universities - designing and running structured programs targeting local and international startup communities. I have also been collaborating with corporate partners designing and delivering intrapreneurial programs, focused on rapid ideation, prototyping and validation.

As a French intern event organizer at TAKEOFF Business Incubator, will be on hand to help with the organization of this start-up weekend.Alice is in Malta for a 6 months interning at TAKEOFF to strengthen her experience and knowledge in the event and planning sector. Having worked for entrepreneurs and start-ups in France, on different projects including creating a national day dedicated to entrepreneurs, helping with the organisation of a startup platform and even team-building gigs. Alice looks to get more involved in the start up scene, loving the creativity, challenge and innovation that comes with it.
