As we are facing special times we all need to re-think and face the "new normal", so we are bringing you Techstars Online Startup Weekend COVID-19 Netherlands to your home! Startup Weekends are 54-hour online events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs, they help you understand and develop your entrepreneurial skills - you'll connect with amazing mentors, industry experts, founders, and partners who are ready to help you get started. For the first time a series of online Techstars Startup Weekends are run at a country level, focused on developing solutions that directly tackle COVID-19 related challenges. 

Do you have an idea on future of education, a solution to tackle the health challenges, a sustainable way to keep businesses going in times of crisis or connecting and support communities in your network or surroundings? Not sure how to get started or who to start with? Or do you have great skills or knowledge you want to contribute with by joining a team? Amazing! This Online Startup Weekend is the perfect opportunity for you to do so, join a team formed across the Netherlands, validate your idea, create a prototype and receive feedback from experienced mentors, e.g. entrepreneurs as well as tech, business and specialised experts in the relevant vertical industries. 

Why Startup Weekend? Because this event is not only about bringing together developers who can work on software-based solutions for the crisis. It’s an opportunity for everyone interested in the topic to inspire and be inspired and to work together on developing inclusive solutions. Tickets to register your place for the event are completely free but you are able to make a donation, which will go to an organization selected by the Techstars, tackling the COVID-19 crisis. If you wish to make a donation, simply add any amount you wish to donate to the ‘Donation’ ticket option. 

Please note: In true Startup Weekend spirit, the ideas you submit should not be existing businesses but new projects. They can but do not necessarily be directly related the current COVID-19 situation. Find more answers to your potential questions in our Attendee FAQ.

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. You register for the Online Startup Weekend Netherlands via Eventbrite.
  2. If you want to contribute an idea, you submit it via Google Form by Wednesday April 22nd, at 6 pm CET. Please have a look into the ticket confirmation from Eventbrite, the Google Form link will be integrated there.
  3. A panel of mentors will vote and select the top ideas to move forward for the weekend team will be working on.
  4. 24 hours before the Online Startup Weekend COVID-19 Netherlands starts, the top selected ideas are communicated to all attendees and you have one day to form teams on the Discord platform. More details will be communicated to the participants who have signed up. 
  5. The Online Startup Weekend COVID-19 Netherlands will be kicked-off by the organising team (via Youtube Livestream) on Friday April 24th at TBC time. You will be provided some introductory information, then you are able to start working with your team right away.
  6. On Saturday April 25th, you’ll get support and feedback on your ideas and projects by our experienced mentors.
  7. On Sunday April 26th at 12 pm, each team submits their idea with a video via Google Form. Our judges will watch those videos and vote on the top 10 teams. Those 10 teams will be invited to a live virtual Demo Day in the evening time. Then, the results will be announced.

What will happen after the Online Startup Weekend COVID-19 Netherlands

Techstars will select up to 20 teams from all the country level winners and invite them to participate in an exclusive Techstars Innovation Bootcamp. The program will surround teams with the frameworks, mentorship, and resources necessary to rapidly identify and validate solutions effectively to help you do more, faster!

In addition, there will be local prizes for the Online Startup Weekend COVID-19 Netherlands edition. Stay tuned, details coming soon.

Ohad Gilad is an entrepreneur, an investor, an advisor, a connector and a Startup Changemaker. He is influencing the Dutch startup ecosystem with Keadyn, his venture capital firm; 42workspace, the leading tech cowork hub of Rotterdam; Angel Academy, an education course for angel investors and WeTechRotterdam, a platform to build the next European tech powerhouse. All these companies together are changing and boosting the Dutch startup ecosystem. Ohad is often active at startup / innovation events and communities, as changemaker, jury or advisor.

CEO and Senior Lecturer

Mehrdad has held various strategic & commercial leadership positions in the Medical sector, Academic world, Healthcare, R&D and Pharma industry. Mehrdad is CEO at Life Science Business Ltd and also Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship & Innovation MedTech and HealthTech (Executive MBA program and Startups program). He has studied at various universities in the Netherlands and is (co-)inventor of several innovative medical technologies, such as: 1) Dutch Bio- electronic Neurodegenerative Filter Technology, for Parkinson's patients. 2) Bionic Neurodegenerative Tremors Blocking System for Restless legs patients. 3) Biomaterial against stent thrombosis in heart patients. 4) POC test for measuring arterial stiffness. 5) Bionic Adjustable Gastric Band.

Since being little I've always said I'd help change the world - I love helping people increase their impact in the world, developing creative solutions and getting stuff done – no matter what the odds are. I started my career in strategy consulting at Deloitte in the Netherlands. Since then, I have worked across countries, cultures, continents and industries on complex (think big and hairy) problems and major turnarounds, requiring organisational insight, strong analytical skills and stakeholder engagement. Lately I have been in the investor seat and am on a mission to democratize wealth through, for starters, revenue based financing deals for impact-driven founders & investors. An adventurer at heart I live to explore and travel, both through work and play.


Paul van Bommel
Co-Founder & COO

I've worked in first generation tech companies for many years (eBay, Twitter, Google, Rocket Internet), as an enterprise sales executive, and later as a sales director. I've also mentored other early-stage successful startups, and now am co-founder & COO of Geowox, where we are reimagining real estate valuations.

My main area of expertise is in finding and working with potential clients (Validation, Product/Market fit validation, Sales). Also, i've extensive operational (Hiring, Managing, Venture Capital) experience.


Cheryl Boyd
Marketing Communications Lead / Co-founder

Cheryl is an American entrepreneur who moved to the Netherlands in 2016 to start an online media company, Dispatches Europe, a lifestyle and information publication for English-speaking expats in Europe. Cheryl and her husband Terry, a lifelong journalist, manage Dispatches Europe and provide marketing communications services to HighTechXL and other high-tech and deep-tech startups and scale-ups. Cheryl is a seasoned writer, editor and marketer passionate about developing content strategies and helping startups craft their stories.


Mari Järvinen
Co-Founder of Profounder for Startups, Entrepreneur and a Startup enthusiast

Mari is an organizational psychologist with a background in organizational development, leadership research, conflict resolution and personnel assessments. In recent years she has worked with, for and among startups in Finland and Amsterdam, helping them create a solid foundation for success.


Tina Yazdi
Sales

Tina Yazdi’s experience ranges from B2C new market launches to B2B product analytics strategy. She started in advertising as a strategist for multinational omnichannel marketing campaigns in EMEA, before becoming an early joiner at Careem (ride hailing company) as a market launcher. Since then, she’s joined Amplitude focused on new market growth. She can support on new market launches, product analytics and B2B SaaS go to market strategy.

Marie Weijler
Investment Manager

Marie Weijler (28) is an investment manager at Cottonwood Technology Fund, a Dutch-American venture capital fund that invests in high-tech and hardware startups. She is currently the only female hardware investor from the Netherlands. Furthermore, Marie is the Chief Legal Officer of LipoCoat, a biotech scale-up. In 2019, Marie was included in the annual Forbes 30 Under 30: Europe list in the Finance category. She is the first Dutch citizen who made it to the list in this category.
