What is Startup Weekend?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1900 past events in 120 countries around the world. As of July 2015, Startup Weekend has reached 135 countries, involving over 210,000 entrepreneurs.

Event is 54-hours long where developers, designers, marketers, product managers, and startup enthusiasts alike come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch a startup!

Startup Weekend Karachi 2016

Aplos Innovations and SEED Ventures are organizing Startup Weekend Karachi on the dates of 25th - 27th November 2016. Over 150 passionate startup enthusiasts will be gathered to hack out their next company. They are participants of Startup Weekend, a global movement of entrepreneurs who are crazy about starting a business and building a new company.

In just 54 hours, participants will form teams, brainstorm, design a product, validate their business idea and pitch in front of experienced judges on Sunday evening.

There will be 3 distinct events as part of Startup Weekend Karachi:

  • Opening Night followed by a Theme Dinner.
  • The Working & Mentoring Sessions followed by a Social Night
  • The Closing Ceremony followed by a Theme Dinner.
Startup Weekend Karachi has been producing success stories that makes vibes worldwide. One of the ideas pitched at Startup Weekend Karachi 2015, Aerosync has raised funding from Seeds Venture in July 2016.

Do I need to come up with an idea?

If you have an idea for a startup, then great! We hope you pitch for the it and gets selected. If you don't have an idea, that's quite alright! Come and spend the weekend, listen to the ideas being pitched, and see if something strikes your interest.

Faraz Khan is a UK-based Pakistani social entrepreneur, investor, author and public speaker. He is regarded as a leading authority on social entrepreneurship and believes in bringing a positive change in the society with forward-thinking business models that allow him to fulfill a personal commitment to improve the lives of people in the UK, Pakistan and beyond. Over a period of 12 years he has taken many entrepreneurial initiatives, transforming them into a success story. He works extensively on Pakistan's entrepreneurial ecosystem across rural, urban and semi-urban environments through incubation, acceleration and investments.

Muhammad Azfar
Founder & CEO of Nutshell Forum

Muhammad Azfar Ahsan’s profile is full of achievements. He is a well-known person in the marketing world. With numerous awards and honors, Azfar’s profile flaunts his excellent leadership as well. He is affiliated with several professional organizations including Pakistan US Alumni Network, Kiwanis International, SHRM Forum Pakistan, Marketing Association of Pakistan, International Federation for Training & Development Organizations, JCI Business Network and many more. As Founder & CEO of Nutshell Forum, an international conference management and training resource organization, he has organized more than four hundred national and international conferences, seminars, training workshops and group discussions in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Singapore and Bahrain. This much enthusiasm for business empowerment and such experience makes him a perfect judge for SWKHI.

Jamal Baquar

Jamal Baquar is one of the most prestigious names in the banking industry. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, he has served at organizations such as Samba bank and JB Morgan Chase. Whereas he also running his own ventures such as Equity 5. Currently he is the Senior Executive Vice President and Group Chief of Corporate Banking Group (CBG) at National Bank of Pakistan.

Danish Amjad

Danish Amjad is currently engaged with Telenor Pakistan, Danish is actively working on Digital Partnerships and Enterprise Solutions in the B2B space. Previously, he worked with a Swedish Fund where he developed a business case/model for participation in a Technology Venture fund. He has also worked in Investment Banking at IGI, Royal Bank of Scotland in London and conducted advisory assignments at Protiviti Middle East. Danish is a graduate of Warwick Business School (WBS), U.K. & Institute of Business Administration (IBA).

Dr. Zaikuddin. Ahmed

Dr. Zakiuddin Ahmed is a visionary strategist, health-care entrepreneur and an expert in physician advocacy. Dr. Zakiuddin Ahmed specializes in developing socially beneficial, sustainable and innovative solutions in the world of Health-care through information technology with a Patient Centric Focus. His areas of interest, expertise and experience are eHealth, mHealth, Telemedicine, Digital Health and Digital Marketing in Health-care and that makes him a globally recognized and invited speaker. Dr. Zakiuddin regularly speaks on eHealth, mHealth, Digital health and Patient Safety conferences around the world and serves on the boards of various international conferences and organizations. He is currently serving as the president of OPEN Karachi.

Faraz Salim

Faraz Salim is known for developing business strategies for the largest global media conglomerate’s new business ventures in South Asia as an independent consultant. He has been working for various multinationals as well as airline giants. From Eithad Airways to Cathay Pacific and from Engro Corporation to Unilever, his jet never landed and is still high in the skies. Having an immense knowledge of the tech industry (Which came from working with Dell and Intel), Faraz is the best strategist Elixir Securities could and ended up making him the Vice President of Communications at Elixir Securities. His long journey in the consulting field and his broad vision makes him a perfect mentor.

Shahbaz Khan

Shahbaz Khan is a multi-talented entrepreneur and a well-known entity in the world of management. His profile flaunts his great work experience. He currently is the Co-founder of a construction supplies and services firm, Engineur and also is the Co-founder & Partner at Sastre Culture, Menswear suiting brand. He is also heading Marketing & Sales in Gizelle Communication which is a part of Seed Ventures. He is the main driving force in creating and shaping marketing, sales and research structures at the organization. He has an inherent ability to grasp complex problems with ease and come up with out-of-the-box solutions. His ability to take any project to a new level and ensuring its exceptionally satisfactory completion makes him an inspiring mentor.

Elia Qazilbash

Elia Qazilbash is among the pioneers of Out of Home Advertising and Retail Design in Pakistan.Over 18 years of experience in marketing of services including Telecommunication, Air-Express and Logistics, Out of Home Advertising, Education and Retail Design. An established entrepreneur with a keen eye to identify opportunities and a pragmatic approach towards implementation, using his academic qualification and more importantly the wealth of experience and teaching.

Arsalan Mahmood

Arsalan Mahmood is a strategy consultant and assumes the role of Head of Business Strategy and Investments at a leading conglomerate. An entrepreneur at heart, Arsalan set up his first consulting venture at the age of 21. Arsalan has strong roots in strategic planning, and specializes in mergers and acquisitions. He has consulted on the same for diverse clients including Goldman Sachs, L'Oréal, Royal Bank of Scotland, ABN AMRO, and Fortis amongst others in the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. Deeply interested in Eco politics, he believes the art of business and the science of economics make the world go round.

Hashim Yasin

Being a seasoned professional in multiple industries and a tech-fanatic with outrageous love for latest gadgets, Hashim is a genetically carved entrepreneur who has been a founding pillar of multiple Startups for past 6 years. In 2014, he converted his passion for tech to full-time profession and co-founded Aplos Innovations where he is currently looking after client communications, financial planning and marketing.
