Startup Weekend Education:

Startup Weekend Education was founded on the belief that entrepreneurship is a powerful force to positively impact education outcomes. We are a part of global initiative that presents unique opportunities for anyone interested in education innovation to learn how to launch and scale their endeavors.

The event:

Startup Weekend Education - Gaza is a 54 hour event, where attendees pitch ideas, form teams and launch education or edtech ventures. These events are very community focused and provide a place for budding entrepreneurs to find co-founders, mentors and momentum for their ideas. The participants that attend have 60 seconds to make a pitch, the pitches are whittled down to the top ideas, and then teams from around the ideas to come out with several developed companies or projects. Finally, the weekend culminates with demonstrations in front of an audience of judges and potential investors.

Speakers


Dr. Sabri Saidam
Minister of Education Ministry

Dr. Saidam is the Minster of Education Ministry - Palestine. Also, he is Head of the Palestine Students Union in Britain and the Director of the Institute of Development Studies founded by UNDP in Gaza. Dr. Sabri holds PhD in electrical engineering from Imperial College London and Bachelor Degree in applied physics and electronics from same university. In 2004, he obtained a training certificate in Human Resources Development from Oxford University. Also, he was the group leader of Birzeit innovation group - Birzeit University.


Dr.Ziad Thabet
Deputy of Education Ministry-Gaza

Dr. Ziad is the deputy of Education Ministry of Palestine. He holds a PhD in Education and Human Rights fields, from Institute of Arab Research and Studies - Egypt in 2006, and a Master Degree in Education (Teaching Methods of Mathematics) in 1997 from Zagazig University - Egypt. Also, Dr. Ziad has a bachelor Degree in Science and Education (Mathematics) from Zagazig University - Egypt in 1986, also, has a special Diploma in Education with (Teaching Methods of Mathematics) from same university in 1995.

Hasan Omar
Co-Founder of Glow Innovations, Development and Investment

Hasan is a serial entrepreneur, economic empowerment expert with extensive hands-on experience in institutional and private sector development, project management and design related to SMEs and jobs creation with a special attention for women and youth.  He contributed heavily to the entrepreneurship, business incubation and acceleration industry establishment in Palestine as the executive founder of the first business incubator (PICTI) in 2004, the CEO of the first Business Innovation Center (BIC) certified by EBN in 2012 and the co-founder of the first Virtual Accelerator in Palestine, GLOW Innovations in 2013.  
Drawing from more than 20 years of solid experience and knowledge in the SMEs world, entrepreneurship and innovation eco-system and the MENA context. Hasan designed and managed implementation of many programs and initiatives toward jobs creation.  He provided mentoring, coaching, business, technical and commercialization services to hundreds of entrepreneurs and startups.   Hasan recently founded the Palestine Network of Mentors and the Entrepreneurship Ambassadors. He delivered many talks, workshops and seminars regionally and internationally and has many publications. He studied at Jordan University of Science and Technology and Bethlehem University, and holds a BSc degree in Computer Engineering and a Master's Degree in International Cooperation and Development.


Ashraf Al-Astal
WSA National Expert (Palestine), & Co-Founder of eAraby

Ashraf AlAstal is a leading expert in ICT Management with an eye for innovation and pixel perfection. He is the Co-Founder of eAraby, whose core business is creating niche Arabic Digital Content and e-Marketing Solutions for Corporates and Governments designed to revolutionize Arabic Digital Content in the MENA region. Ashraf is an experienced IT Engineer and a Project Management Professional who provides strategic advisory services focused on e-Business Development polices, entrepreneurship, social innovation and Arabic Digital Content. During the past 20 years, he managed to plan and create multiple innovative solutions and revolutionized how technical and business services were being delivered for the subscribers of Palestine Cellular Communications Company. Prof. AbedAlKareem AlMadhoun
Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research - University of Palestine, Member of the Supreme Council for creativity and excellence

Prof. AbedAlKareem S. AlMadhoun is an Associate Professor of Mental Health 
and Dean of Scientific Research and post-Graduarte Studies in University of Palestine in Gaza (Palestine). He is candidate for professorship during this year (2016), member of the board of Higher council for Innovation and Excellence in Palestine, Editor of the university magazine body and  Director Debates center in University of Palestine and Qatar Debate.  He worked in many administrative positions in the university.  Also, has shared in many scientific conferences in local and regional universities and was the president of many of them.  His researches and studies focused on social support, quality of life and improvement of life satisfaction and behavior, emotional intelligence and psychological alienation among adults in Gaza community. His researches are published in many universities' Journals.  Dr. Abed AlKareem  was the supervisor for many post-Graduate theses. Also He shared in arbitration of many studies. He played a vital and important role in linkage of university with local and international institutions and organizations for local community activities.


Dr. Jon Schultz
Senior Researcher - Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies

Dr. Jon holds PhD in special needs Education. He has worked several years as a researcher in the field of education in Emergencies.  Now, he's working as a professor in Education at the University of Tromsø, Norway. Currently he's Staying 6 months in Gaza working for UNRWA community mental health.

Dr. Beatrice Bressan
GGateway ICT Social Enterprise Director - Gaza.

Beatrice Bressan is the Director of GGateway ICT Social Enterprise in Gaza. After a Degree in Mathematical Physics and a Master in Science Communication, she obtained a Ph.D. in Knowledge Management and Technology Transfer. In over 25 years of professional career she has worked as business development strategy expert consultant for enterprises, associations, and organizations, and held several managerial executive positions including in the establishment of science-related businesses in the West Bank. She has extensive experience in conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation. As science writer and journalist, she is author and editor of several internationally distributed books and publications on a wide range of subjects.


Dr. Sami Abu Shammala
Assistant Professor and Head of scholar research and library at University College of Applied Sciences (UCAS)

Dr. Sami N M Abushammala is an Assistant Professor and Head of scholar research and library at University College of Applied Sciences (UCAS), where he has been since 2005. He also currently serves as consultant of RAI consult office since. He was manager of Khanuonis branch for Sama Gaza co, the agent of Easy forex in Palestine. He received his Ph.D. in Finance the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2015. His research interests center on financial analysis, assessment, economics, financial markets, liquidity management, entrepreneurship, and performance evaluation. He invited talks and workshops. He is author of three books related to business correspondence, essentials of Corporate Finance and financial analysis, and is the author of five papers on Finance.


Rasha Abu Safieh
Co-founder and Capacity Building Manager of GGateway ICT Social Enterprise - Gaza

Rasha Abu Safieh is a professional in the fields of Management & Technology and a distinguished achiever with honour in all her years of study in different fields. She has degrees/ certified in Information Technology, Computer Programming and Projects Management. She is a strong project manager with exceptional technical and programming skills. She is a team influencer, very patient and creative person with excellent communication and decision-making skills. She has 10 years of experience working on private, educational and humanitarian international organizations to facilitate the use of technology as source of income creation for youth. She is interested in social entrepreneurship, technology and change management.


Dr. Iyad Agha
Assistant Professor, Faculty of Information Technology, IUG

Dr. Iyad AlAgha holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Durham, UK.  He is currently working as an assistant professor at the College of Information Technology at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG). He is also the head of Multimedia and Web development Dprt since 2015 and was the former head of Software Development Dprt.
Dr. AlAgha worked as a post-doc research associate at the Dprt of Engineering and Computing sciences, University of Durham (2009-2012).  Also, was a co-investigator on SynergyNet, project manager of APPEAR- Prep90 (through 2014), part-time curriculum developer and consultant for the University College of Applied Science (UCAS) in 2015 where he prepared a course material on the development of smartphone apps.  Moreover, He worked for several local and international organizations to provide vocational training and consultancy in developing mobile apps field for android system.
Dr. Iyad received several scholarships and research grants to do Master's degree in Internet and Distributed systems.  He also was awarded the excellence in Teaching and Learning Award from the University of Durham.  In 2013, Dr. AlAgha received a research project grant from IUG to explore the use of Augmented Reality technologies for learning at Higher education institutions in Palestine.  Then, in 2015, he was part of a team that received a research grant from Qatar Charity to conduct research on mobile learning.


Issam AlZinaty
Senior Software Engineer at UCAS

Eng. Issam, software developer for 10 years. He holds a bachelor in computer engineering, he worked as freelancer and developed several web apps. Now, he works at UCAS as Senior Software Developer. He is interested in big data apps and analysis, which was his Master Degree Study in University of Manchester.  


Uta Beyer
GGateway ICT Social Enterprise Director - Gaza

Uta Beyer is the Director of Operations of Gaza Gateway ICT Social Enterprise in Gaza. She has
a Master’s degree in Economics and Sociology and over 20 years of professional experience.
Over the last 10 years she has held senior positions in business support and private sector
development organizations in the wider Middle East region, and has experience in consulting,
building up, and coaching small and medium sized enterprises as well as in operations and
executive management of profit and non-profit organizations.


Fadi Hania
Software Engineering Consultant

Fadi Hania is a co-founder of Wateen Technologies, a web and mobile development services provider. He has over 12+ years of experience focused on Software Development. He has started his career as a freelance developer and worked with many customers around the world. As an expert in Software Engineering, he is providing consultation services to a number of local and international organizations and coaching startups, aiming to improve the overall software development process and industry in Gaza.Fadi holds an MSc in Software Engineering from the University of York, and he has been a successful trainer and academic instructor for a number of low and high-level Software Engineering and development courses.


Abdelrahman Hawajri
Analyst programmer at UNRWA Gaza.

Abdelrahman Hawajri Analyst programmer at UNRWA Gaza. Abdelrahman is an Analyst programmer in UNRWA, Cofounder and web development manager of Access line for information technology. A senior programmer with more than 12 years of successful experience in the software industry with a proven ability to lead and contribute. He was involved in implementation of process across the organization. Participated in many projects in different local and international organizations. An excellent communicator with trouble shooting and decision making skills as a senior programmer, database administrator, consultant, trainer and team leader.


Mohammed Qudaih
Founder of Haweya, co-founder of Divvat co.

Mohammed is the founder of Haweya, co-founder for divvat company for information technology. Mohammed has got the Google marketing challenge reward as the best 20th all over the world, the 3rd in Mena region.
Mohammed is a content manager at work without borders, digital marketing campaigns (nojoom altahi, tabkh regal).
He is a graphic designer at life-makers palestine.
Mohammed is also a media manager and executive council member at UAE student forum.
Mohammed is a project co-ordinator at al Ber association.

Mohamed Al-Madhoun
Computer Engineering Student at IUG.

Mohammed is a second year student in The Islamic University of Gaza in the Computer Engineering department. He worked as a web developer for 6 years and has a vast knowledge in that field, his ambitions took him from that field to somewhere he could find more challenging, and so he chose Game Development through Unity3d Engine and he's been working in that field for 4 years and counting. Mohammed wishes to learn more about Game Development and aims to have a team of his own.


Lina Al-Madhoun
Web Designer & UI/UX Designer

Lina holds a B.Sc. in Multimedia and web development from IUG. She has been a UI/UX designer since the beginning of 2014, she worked at World Digital, and worked as a web and a graphic designer at Athar and Dalili startups in 2013-2014. She is also a photographer, a graphic designer and a journalist at Young Journalist Club.


Rami Nijim
IT Systems Manager of GGateway ICT Social Enterprise in Gaza

Rami Nijim is IT Systems Manager of GGateway ICT Social Enterprise in Gaza. He is Computer Engineer working for UNRWA Gaza Field Office for more than 10 years as Lab Technician and Information System Help Desk Assistant. His specialisation is to provide technical support for more than 4000 users and more than 11.000 ICT assets inside UNRWA compounds. He has more than 2000 training hours in Network, Security and server administration, holding most of related international certifications. He is Microsoft certified trainer granted after hard evaluation criteria. He has acquired valuable experience in all facets of troubleshooting, installations, and maintenance for various desktop operations, hardware, and software, with a unique talent for managing servers and install network infrastructure services and hardware switching and routing. He is now studying to obtain an MBA diploma and looking forward to enhance his managerial skills and keep learning new and good things.

Helping youth and new graduates getting into job market is a big challenge and a big deal for me as it is for educational and training organization, So, building and developing a reliable job markets' information resource for the higher education colleges and universities and for individuals is a strategic basis in my work, in addition to conducting with partners job market needs assessment studies and surveys, forecasts and market trends studies. Building partnerships for On-the-Job training with local market. I, as a consultant, utilize the experience and information which we collect from the market in advising the establishment of new specialties or deletion of others. I'm expert in conducting value evaluation studies for majors of specialties and training courses at the higher education level. I offer consultancy on building career management and employment preparation training programs for school students and for students at the higher education stage, consultancy services on employment oriented education based on qualitative and quantitative job markets' needs. I believe that the employment and unemployment rates is the never-lying performance indicator for work value at schools,vocational centers and universities.


Bassma AlShaikhAli
Co-founder and Corporate Service Manager of GGateway

She has 9 years progressive experience in both Information Technology and Project Management in the Gaza Strip. Bassma is a certified project manager who was in charge of multidisciplinary projects in different local and international organizations. She has a BSc with honour in Computer Science in College of Engineering in Montana State University, USA, an Oracle Certified Professional certification, and an MBA Diploma from Islamic University in Gaza. In 2012, Bassma nominated and completed the Entrepreneurial Leadership Program (ELP) is a one-year MBA-Equivalent program in leadership drawn from Portland State University’s (PSU) MBA curriculum. The program is provided for distinguished leaders under partnership between PSU and Mercy Corps.


Iyad Najjar
Education specialist.

Iyad Najjar holds a PHD degree in the field of education from the university of Ain Shams in Egypt, and also holds a bachelor degree in the field of Mathmatics from the educational sience college in Ramallah.
Since 2010, Iyad has been the coordinator of "Taalam" website for Education and also the manager of the interactive learning program in the UNRWA.
Since 2012, Iyad has been a member in the programs production team in the UNRWA channel .And also has been the manager of the educational programs devoted for palestinian student refugees in syria.
Since 2014, Iyad has worked as an education specialist in the UNRWA, and has been involved in planning the marketing stragtegy for Mashareq radio channel.
In 2015, Iyad worked as a trainer for two Educational programs( Leadership for future and the collective learning trainings) powered by the UNRWA.


Ibrahim Al Jabour
GHub Manager

GHub Manager Social Enterprise in Gaza. With more than 10 years of experience working on IT and business development, Ibrahim is currently promoting youth empowerment through self-employment and building outsourcing relationships with overseas clients to bring long-term workflow for local market and generating job opportunities for unemployed graduates. Before joining GGateway, he worked with Mercy Corps as ICT and Entrepreneurship officer where he worked to build and strength the Palestinian entrepreneurial ecosystems, promote youth employment and empowerment through workforce development and education. Prior to Mercy Corps, Ibrahim worked in leading positions at private sector companies and non-profit organizations, including United Nations. Ibrahim has a BSc in Business Systems from Al Azhar University. In 2013, he earned a diploma in Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship from University of Michigan.


Lauren Peate (Via Skype)
Business Development Manager

Lauren has experience working and living in the US, Central America, North Africa, the Middle East, and New Zealand, and she speaks English, Arabic, French, and Spanish as varying levels. Over the last few years, she was based in Jordan where she worked with Endeavor Jordan and then served as Business Development Manager and later Interim COO for Jamalon, the eCommerce startup with the largest catalog of Arabic and English books in the Middle East. After wrapping up with Jamalon, she supported startups throughout the Middle East as an advisor, travelling from Saudi Arabia to the West Bank and Gaza. She visited Gaza twice to mentor at bootcamps for Gaza Sky Geeks and was so impressed with the quality of startups in Gaza that she wrote a TechCrunch article about it.   Lauren was previously a management consultant with Bain & Co. in San Francisco, where she worked with large tech companies to improve their strategy and operations. She studied at Stanford University and holds a degree in Economics with minors in Arabic and Human Biology. She is currently based in New Zealand, where she is working on her next startup endeavor—watch this space!


Mohammad Ibrahim (Via Skype)

Mohammad Ibrahim is the United States Ambassador for The Palestinian House in Silicon Valley Program (PHSV), where he manages the program in Silicon Valley. He’s an Entrepreneur and Co-Founder of a Silicon Valley based startup that provides the safest & most natural alternative form of sugar to the world! Prior to that, he did Business Development at PITME (Progress In Technology Middle East), which was started to help entrepreneurs in the Middle East building companies, create opportunities and to introduce a fragment of the Silicon Valley moral fiber and to get startups connected to clients, investors and partners. Mohammad graduated University with a B.S. in Finance and Economics from the United States and completed part of his studies in London, UK.

Dianna Yau, is an entrepreneurial global citizen whose experiences spans from corporate settings to startups. Her vision for the future is to bridge her experience at technology organizations to driving social impact, providing solutions in education, poverty, healthcare. Dianna currently works at IBM as a business consultant, arming Fortune 100 companies with innovation solutions to reshape businesses and industries. Prior to that she worked at Rocket Internet, helping build startup ecosystems in emerging economies and Google, where she worked with entrepreneurs on digital marketing. Before she started working, she studied economics, psychology and leadership at Columbia University where she aimed to target her education to making an impact. 


Aazar Shad (Via Skype)

Aazar Ali is the specialist in B2B sales. He has worked with Emirates Telecom as a Key Account Manager, and BizDev Specialist in a couple of startups. He has his own startup in Munich Germany named Lieferoo UG which is going to be launched by the end of April. Currently, he's heading Sales of Accredible and now Acccredible has 5 times more revenue than last year in Accredible since he has joined. He's a closer. He's a specialist Salesman, Digital Marketer and an Entrepreneur.”  


Jenny Baez

Jenny has studied Graphic design, political sciences and hold a master’s degree in international security (international relations).  She's from Venezuela, lived and worked in the US, France, Jordan and Palestine – mainly focused on project management and humanitarian assistance to refugees – as well as donor relations and fundraising.


Tania McBride

Tania McBride is the Chief of Field Office (a.i) for UNICEF Gaza. She has a Master's in Education from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Tania has 16 years of experience in the Education sector and lectured in Teacher Education, Social Sciences and Health Education at the Christchurch College of Education (at the University of Canterbury). She has taught in various parts of the world including London and Sonoda University in Japan. Since joining the United Nations in 2006, Tania has worked in a variety of humanitarian contexts, including Haiti, Pakistan and Darfur in Sudan. Before joining UNICEF in Gaza, Tania worked for the past 4 years as UNICEF Regional Emergency Specialist, covering countries in crisis in the Middle East and North Africa

Alaa Saqer
Product Manager

Alaa Saqer is one of the founding members and leaders of Gaza’s startup and tech

community. An Information Technology graduate from the top university in Gaza, he 

was one of the winners of Gaza’s first Startup Weekend in 2011. He went on to launch 

Datrios, a game and social network for sports fans, and one of the first two startups in 

Gaza to receive investment (from Oasis500). In 2010, he co-founded the Google 

Developers Group Gaza, a grassroots student organization that trains youth in tech topics 

and connects them to Google’s resources.

Based in Gaza, Alaa is now a product manager for EXA, a well-known technology 

company in Saudi Arabia. He is fluent in agile product development and a mentor at 

many startup events in Gaza, including Gaza Sky Geeks’ bootcamps. Prior to becoming a 

tech entrepreneur, he worked for Mercy Corps (the largest humanitarian organization in 

Gaza after the United Nations) as a program officer providing psychosocial support to 

children using sports methods. In his free time, Alaa is a loving father and a sports fan.
