What is SWSG? | At SWSG, you’ll meet like-minded people to brainstorm, design products and validate your ideas with high calibre mentors and judges. Throughout the weekend, prepare to be immersed in an ideal environment where you will be equipped with the right tools and approaches to realise your startup idea. Begin with building your team and brainstorming with them on Friday evening, get down to business on Saturday, and pitch your ideas to the crowd and panel of experts on Sunday.

In just one weekend, you’ll be able to take giant leaps towards creating a business, becoming a founder, connecting with the right people and resources to actually start a business.
Who is SWSG for? | Startup Weekend Singapore is for everyone; whether you are in the corporate world, juggling your own business, hustling in a startup, or working as a coder, designer, businessman or a student, everyone can start working on their big ideas and contribute to the team in their own special way. Young and old, experienced or new to the startup scene, we invite all to come join and create an impact at Startup Weekend in Singapore. It will be a festive hackathon to celebrate innovation, ideas and camaraderie.   

Developer: The developer eats, sleeps and breathes code. The one who can create algorithms, intellectual property, and build products that forms the building blocks of the startup. Instrumental in building a platform for sustained growth.

Hustler: The hustler eats, sleeps and breathes the business model. The one who builds the team, ignites their passion, forms partnerships and guides the team along the validation path all while cementing its culture. With a keen eye for numbers, this role typically entails anyone from a business, marketing, finance, law background, etc.  

Designer: The designer eats, sleeps and breathes design. The one who follows the best practices in brand identity building, user experience, information architecture and wire framing. Constantly keeping the consumer behaviors in mind, this role usually loves UI, UX and is a born artist.

Event Judges

Arthur Tang
Vice President & Acting Chief of Enterprise Business Group | StarHub

Arthur is responsible for driving the next growth phase of StarHub enterprise business and deepening the engagement with the business community. He is active in the tech industry and is currently serving as co-opted councillor at SGTech.  

Prior to joining StarHub, he worked for Tech Mahindra and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. His most recent stint was with Hewlett Packard Enterprise as Director and General Manager of Commercial and Public Sector for Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Guillaume Sachet
Partner, Digital Transformation | KPMG

Guillaume Sachet has 23 years of experience in the tech industry. Prior to joining KPMG as a Partner, he was the Head of Strategy at Mediacorp where he drove digital transformation, innovation and investments between 2012 and 2017. He was subsequently appointed Head of Social to manage the group’s social media and digital marketing activities.

Prior to Mediacorp, Mr Sachet was a Partner with the strategy practice of Accenture, responsible for telecom, media and tech strategy clients across Southeast Asia. Over the years, he has developed deep digital strategy and customer experience knowledge and expertise across the Asia Pacific region. He has spent more than 20 years in Asia, working in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Brunei, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea and China. Recognised as a thought leader in the tech industry, he is a regular speaker and writer.

Nicholas Lee
Chief Executive Officer | EZ-Link

Nicholas Lee is the Chief Executive Officer of EZ-Link Pte Ltd, where he oversees the strategic direction and growth of the company. He is responsible for driving adoption, transactions and applications of the ez-link card, the leading contactless smart card that has been serving millions of commuters and consumers in Singapore every day since 2002. 

Under Nicholas’ leadership, EZ-Link has continuously delivered cashless innovations pivotal to realising Singapore’s cashless society vision. These include launch of  EZ-Charms - EZ-Link’s first non-card form factor; My EZ-Link Mobile application - the world’s first Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile application for contactless card top-ups; EZ-Link NFC SIM - the first NFC payment service on Singapore’s public transit; and EZ-Pay - Singapore’s first free card-less ERP payment service.
 Most recently, in December 2017, Nicholas also steered his team towards launching the new EZ-Link app, lifting users to a whole new level of convenience in accessing EZ-Link’s functionalities and services.

Alan Hellawell
Partner | Alpha JWC Ventures

Alan Hellawell has been intimately involved in the Asian internet and e-commerce space since 1995. He has served in a variety of leadership positions, both within industry in operational positions, and as the head of TMT research in investment banking. Alan most recently served as Sea’s (NYSE: SE) Group Chief Strategy Officer, based in Singapore; with responsibilities for key partnerships, in-bound and outbound investment and M&A, investor relations and other areas. Alan has worked regularly with management across other leading global platforms such as Alibaba, Tencent, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Paypal; in addition to the region’s leading PE, VC and investment banking firms. Alan prior to this managed Deutsche Bank’s Asia TMT research group for 11 years based in Hong Kong. Alan supported many of China’s largest internet companies from their early, private stages through IPO and beyond. He maintains long running “CxO-level” relationships with dozens of leading names in the space. Prior to his role at Deutsche Bank, Alan held positions at Lehman Brothers, Lucent Technologies and Netscape Communications. Alan currently mentors a number of Southeast Asian internet start-up’s.Alan graduated from Stanford University with a Masters in Business Administration and Masters in East Asian Studies. Alan also holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University.

Coaches and Mentors

Silvia Thom
CTO | Zalora

Silvia Thom is the CTO of Product Management at ZALORA - Asia's leading online fashion destination. Together with her team, she oversees ZALORA's customer-facing products such as the websites and an Android and iOS app but also internal systems used by Operations & Logistics, Customer Service and Buying.

Before working for ZALORA, Silvia headed the Product Team at Glossybox, a beauty subscription service and was the Country Manager for Japan at Sellaband, a music crowdfunding platform. Silvia is a native German who loves to travel and experience different cultures. She was based in Berlin, London, Madrid and Tokyo before moving to Singapore at the beginning of 2013.

David Chua
CEO | National Youth Council

David was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Council in July 2015, becoming the autonomous agency’s first CEO. NYC was restructured into an autonomous agency under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth in January 2015, and operates as the national body coordinating holistic youth development. It also houses Outward Bound Singapore and Youth Corps Singapore. David is also concurrently the Chairman of *SCAPE.

David graduated from Imperial College, University of London with a Master of Engineering, and subsequently a Master of Business Administration from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Prior to joining NYC, David served in the Singapore Armed Forces for 22 years. His more interesting jobs saw him working in Indonesia for three years across 27 provinces as an Army Attaché and organizing the 2013 National Day Parade Show. He was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military) in 2014.

David is married with four children.

Alvan Aiau Yong
Regional Lead | Airbnb for Work

Alvan is the Regional Lead, Airbnb for Work and leads the Sales and Account Management team in the Asia Pacific region.

Based in Singapore, Alvan’s team is responsible for acquiring, nurturing and growing the corporate client adoption onto the Airbnb for Work platform.

Alvan joined Airbnb in 2017 having spent the last 5 years working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) in multiple roles across Sales, Program Management, Product Marketing and Operations. In his last role, he was Vice President, Global Sales and Program Management responsible for managing CWT’s extensive client base in the Asia Pacific region and for delivering solutions that add value to the travel programs of global corporations.

Prior to joining CWT, Alvan led the Ocean Freight division at DHL Global Forwarding, first in Shanghai, then Singapore, managing the delivery of complex off-shoring projects, operational improvement initiatives, as well as management of supplier and vendor performance. 

With more than 15 years of experience across operations, quality, and sales functions, Alvan is a leader with strong customer focus and a track record of successful project deliveries.

In his free time, Alvan runs an employee hosted experience in the Airbnb Singapore office to introduce boxing to his colleagues.

Mohan Belani
Co-founder & CEO | e27

Mohan Belani is the Co-founder and CEO of e27, a startup and tech ecosystem platform focused on help startup founders build and grow their companies. He believes that startups can make the world a better place, and in order for Southeast Asia's tech ecosystem to be relevant, it needs to be driven by sustainable and impactful companies solving problems at scale.

He enjoys working with Founders and helping them alleviate the challenges of building great companies specifically around the areas of talent, funding and market access.

Nicholas Teo
Assistant Professor and Deputy Programme Director | SIT

Nicholas is a design anthropologist who teaches design methodologies at Singapore Institute of Technology. His experience in applying design to different schools ranges from business to healthcare. His research interests include experience design, spatial design, service design, ethnographic methodologies, and popular culture.

Having graduated from the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne and having work experience in both Australia and Europe, Nicholas has been exposed to the values and nuances of designing and understanding of different cultures and communities. Through the awarding of various grants locally, Nicholas has been able to work closely with various companies to build better design driven solutions. He has presented his work and research on design and education around the world and is now trying to build a stronger design community in Singapore.

Liz Brown
Partner and Chief Experience Officer | BCKG

Liz is a proud generalist committed to utilizing her interdisciplinary skillset as an urban planner, user experience designer, and technologist to bridge gaps and highlight the importance of inclusion within innovation ecosystems. As Managing Director at Backstage Philadelphia, she contributed to the development and successful launch of Backstage Capital's accelerator for underrepresented founders. Additionally, Liz is the cofounder and Chief Experience Officer at BCKG, a Philadelphia based design thinking consultancy aimed towards helping forward-thinking startups, organizations, and government agencies to unpack problems and identify effective solutions.

Prior to launching BCKG, she cofounded and served as Co-CEO & Head of Design at Webjunto, a user experience focused design and software development agency that served 100+ startups and enterprises globally. In her free time, Liz continues to do work in the community as a civic hacking enthusiast, meetup organizer, and globetrotting public speaker.

Sang Shin
Director, Digital Innovation | Temasek

Sang co-founded Been, Inc. in 2013 and developed the world’s first and only mobile app that enabled users to monetize and take control of their personal data and privacy, blocking personal data collection and advertising from all mobile websites and mobile apps on iPhones. The disruptive threat caused by the app, called Been Choice, utlimately resulted in the app getting banned from the App Store after it went viral in the United States.

Sang decided to move from Silicon Valley to Singapore to help develop the region's startup ecosystem, bringing his experiences from Been, McKinsey, and Bridgewater Associates with him.

He was the Head of Strategy & Architecture at GIC before moving to Temasek where he is currently the Director of Digital Innovation.

Vincent Desclaux
Managing Director | PALO IT

Vincent had been working in Asia for the past 10 years (Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai) within the digital and technology space. He had founded and run several companies in different sectors such as IT Consulting, Education and the F&B business. As a servant leader, he inspires teams to harness the power of trust, collaboration and accountability to go beyond efficiency, productivity and execution. As an Agile and Technology enthusiast, he is passionate about digital innovation and the infinite horizons that it offers.

Vini Mota
Design Lead | PALO IT

Vini is a firm believer that we’re better together – knowing that co-creation is the best way to gain a holistic view of a customer, stakeholder and business needs. To deliver a positive impact for people, he will do his best to create a tailored process, all the way from ideation to implementation. With 10+ years of experience working in Brazil, Australia, Dubai and Singapore, his previous clients include AUDI, Heineken, Virgin Mobile, Borouge, HMV and Kodak.

Jordan Dea-Mattson
Site Director, Singapore |

Previously, Jordan was the VP of Engineering where he led Carousell's engineering team. He oversees the development, systems design and delivery of product and infrastructure. Jordan wrote his first line of code in 1981, and developed his entire career in software engineering.

He has more than 35 years of experience from Silicon Valley, having spent many of his earlier yearsin Apple working on the Macintosh up to Mac OS X. After leaving Apple, he took on different engineering roles in Adobe and Yahoo. Jordan uprooted from America and came to Singapore in 2016 because he believes that Southeast Asia will experience profound growth and change in the next few decades.

He is extremely passionate about using technology to solve problems at scale, as well as nurturing talent and building a world-class engineering community in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Mark Lven Tupa Palejaro
Co-founder, Pocket Hologram

Co-founder of Pocket Hologram as well as an active volunteer in One Maker Group, Sustainable Living Lab, and in various National Geographic Channel events. These groups use their talents in the field of Mechatronics, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, challenge their knowledge and create innovations that science has to offer. Youth Economic Empowerment Consultant

Cynthia leads the incubation programmes for young social entrepreneurs in 20+ countries at the Youth Co:Lab, an initiative co-led by the UNDP Asia-Pacific and Citi Foundation to economically empower the next generation in the region, through youth entrepreneurship and government innovation. She is also the co-founder of a travel fintech startup called, which helps travellers better manage their FX needs for a more connected world. 

After participating her first Startup Weekend in the Silicon Valley in 2014, she has been actively involved in organising and facilitating 18+ events across Asia. She has a deep passion for future skills education and financial inclusion for women, and always intrigued to learn about new ways to advance development through her travels.
