Startup Weekend at America House Kyiv

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour weekend event, during which groups of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more pitch ideas for new startup companies, form teams around those ideas, and work to develop a working prototype, demo, or presentation by Sunday evening. Startup Weekend has grown into an organization with a global presence. As of July 2015, Startup Weekend has reached 135 countries, involving over 210,000 entrepreneurs. Startup Weekend is run by Techstars.

Startup Weekend Kyiv on November 18-20 is happening during Global Entrepreneurship Week and is hosted by America House Kyiv.  70 people will participate. Participation is free and we are now accepting applications - APPLY EARLY.

In case you have already applied through the America House announcement, do not do anything - we will synchronize application lists via Eventbrite.

To be considered for participation, please apply via Eventbrite (click BUY TICKETS big blue button on the left). Though the button is labeled BUY TICKETS, participation is free. Deadline for applications is November 10, 2016. Selected participants will be notified by November 12, 2016.

Ed O'Bryan
Foreign Service Officer

Ed O’Bryan is an Economic Coned Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State.  He currently serves as the head of the Immigrant Visa Section at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine.  He previously served as Political and Economic Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.  Prior to joining the State Department, Ed lived in Minsk, Belarus where he worked with the United Nation’s Global Compact project promoting corporate social responsibility.  Ed comes from a family of entrepreneurs and spent 15 years working in his family owned business in Nebraska City, Nebraska before beginning his overseas adventures with his wife and 2 daughters.

Regina Makhotina
Executive Director at UAngel

Regina Makhotina serves at the Executive Director of UAngel. Working with investment deal flow and startups on a daily basis, Ms. Makhotina gained experience in business processes and development, as well as cooperation and investor-startup relations. Being a startup community insider gives her a chance to be a connector in a possible startup-investor cooperation.

Denis Gursky
Co-Founder at 1991 Open Data Incubator

Denis Gursky is the Founder of Open Data reform in Ukraine and 1991 Open Data Incubator. As leader of SocialBoost – a tech NGO, he works on building the data-driven startup ecosystem in Ukraine as well setting up the 1991 National Seed Fund.
Mr. Gursky leads - a community of 1000+ hacktivists supported by the Ukrainian government that deliver great products such as and dozens of web/mobile applications based on government data. (

Dimitri Podoliev
Advisor to Secretary General at National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine; - Co-Founder/Managing Partner at IHUB; and Co-Founder & Chairman at Seed Forum Ukraine Foundation

Dimitri Podoliev is an investment professional with an engineering degree from Cambridge University and - a passion for entrepreneurship, early stage startup companies and all things related to IT.
He dedicates a considerable amount of time to social entrepreneurship and impact investment activities which support the growth of innovative SMEs and startup entrepreneurship across Ukraine.
His specialties include investment management, entrepreneurship, IT, startup companies, Business Incubators, Venture Capital

Andy Hunder
President at American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine

Andy Hunder, a native Londoner, is President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. With over two decades of experience, Andy has become a recognized leading specialist in Public Affairs, Communications and Government Relations in Ukraine.
As director of the Ukrainian Institute, London, Andy was a regular commentator on Ukrainian current affairs in the international media. In 2014 he was interviewed live more than 100 times on BBC, CNN, Sky News, ITV, Al Jazeera and others. He has spoken on Ukraine in the Houses of Parliament, House of Lords, Oxford University, London School of Economics and University College London.

Mykola Streltsov

Mykola Streltsov is the financial director of a large production facility with over 400 employees. His professional experience at this level exceeds 10 years, and he holds a MBA degree from INSEAD. Mr. Streltsov mentors startup teams at 1991 Open Data Incubator to help them understand the value of their products, organize their calculations, and clarify their business models.

Alena Betsa
Senior Strategist

Alena Betsa worked as senior strategist at Leo Burnett Ukraine and as a strategic planner at TBWA\Ukraine and Creative Buro Sahar. Currently she runs her own business in this industry. Ms. Betsa is a mentor at 1991 Open Data Incubator and helps teams go through vital marketing and branding steps.

Oksana Borysenko (Reznik)
CEO at E.Trade

Oksana Borysenko is CEO at E.Trade - marketplace for state procurement via Prozorro.
She is also the President at Association of IT-companies "Digital Ukraine". Oksana plays an important role in the local startup sector as an Independent Consultant at CEE Angel Investments and as an adviser to several startups. 

Kalsoom Lakhani
CEO and Founder at Invest2Innovate

Kalsoom Lakhani is the Founder and CEO of Invest2Innovate, or i2i, which supports startups and the broader entrepreneurship ecosystem in growth markets. i2i has been operating since 2011. Ms. Lakhani has trained young entrepreneurs, changemakers, and civil society leaders in Pakistan, Cambodia, Ireland, Bangladesh, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. She has spoken at numerous venues, including the World Economic Forum, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, U.S. State Department, and the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.  She was previously a Washington, D.C. Co-Ambassador for Sandbox (recently renamed the Thousand Network), a global network of innovators under 30, and is a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers.

Erik Wesner
Partner at NorthStar Consulting; Founder and Editor at

Erik Wesner is a Partner at NorthStar Consulting, as well as the Founder and Editor or He travels around the region to train sales teams of IT companies and also mentors at Hub:raum in Krakow.  He is visiting Kyiv for a NorthStar Consulting client meeting and is eager to volunteer as a sales coach.

Eugene Sarantsov
Founder of Trade Hub

Eugene Sarantsov is a Ukrainian IT entrepreneur.  For the past 5 years, Mr. Sarantsov has been a developer and coordinator for several successful businesses in the IT field. In October 2014, Mr. Sarantsov sold his IT project “zakupki-online.”  Today, he is a Member of the Board of Directors of one of the largest Ukrainian trade b2b platforms,  In 2016, Mr. Sarantsov will graduate from the МВА program ‘Banking & Finance’ at Kyiv Mohyla Business School.   Mr. Sarantsov is also a founder of Trade Hub, a studio of solutions for the b2b market. Trade Hub analyzes, searches and adapts the digital technologies which assist Ukrainian companies to enter the global market. As of April 2015, Mr. Sarantsov has been working on creating and launching a new model of business incubators in Ukraine.

Nikolay Savin
Head of Products at Competera Company

Since 2008, Nikolay Savin has worked extensively with startups at the pre-seed and seed stages.  Having been a part of Ukrainian startup community from its early stages, Nikolay is familiar with both local market players and specifics of the region. Ecosystem development is Mr. Savin’s passion, and he has created many links between Ukrainian and global startups.  

Oleg Goncharenko
CEO and Co-Founder at KEVURU

Oleg Goncharenko is the CEO and Co-Founder at KEVURU.  He is a manager with experience in consulting, operations and marketing.  KEVURU creates value for its clients through its understanding of business processes. Mr. Goncharenko holds an MBA from INSEAD and volunteers as a coach for Ukrainian startups.

Debora Fairlamb
Deputy Director of the Investment Promotion Office of Ukraine

Deborah Fairlamb has more than 20 years of professional experience building and marketing a wide range of businesses, products and programs. She worked in senior level positions in Private Banking with Merrill Lynch and UBS for 15 years before she transitioned her corporate experience to more entrepreneurial investment and business development projects.  She has worked as an independent advisor and business consultant in Georgia, Ukraine, and the U.S. for the last 7 years. Currently, she serves as Deputy Director of the Investment Promotion Office of Ukraine, an initiative from the Office of the Prime Minister.

Oleh Zahnitko
Partner, EU Desk at Integrites

Oleh Zahnitko, PhD, is a partner at Integrites since October 2015.  Mr. Zahnitko’s principal focus is on corporate finance, financial institutions compliance, and exchange control regulations in domestic and international finance.  Mr. Zahnitko has experience representing the interests of companies from industrial areas such as automotive, banking, agriculture, consumer lending, NPL sale and restructuring, energy, iron & steel as well as capital markets. His recent projects include syndicated loan facilities to industrial companies and financial institutions, project finance, and supporting the market entry of consumer finance companies.  Before joining the Integrites office in Kyiv, Mr. Zahnitko co-headed the Ukrainian banking and finance team at Gide Loyrette Nouel (2014-2015) and Beiten Burkhardt (2005-2014). At the beginning of his career, Mr. Zahnitko was a senior research fellow at the Economy and Law Research Institute (National Academy of Science of Ukraine) and Donetsk National University (1996-2001).  Mr. Zahnitko graduated from Donetsk State University with degree in Commercial Law, John Marshall Law School, Chicago, Illinois, USA (LLM in Comparative Legal Studies) and obtained a post-graduate degree (equivalent of Ph.D) from the Institute of Economic and Law Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Bohdan Kupych
Vice Chair at Borsch Ventures

Bohdan Kupych is a business development and technology executive with 25 years of experience in the developing economies of Russia/Ukraine/CIS/CEE.  Mr. Kupych’s portfolio includes:  De Novo, advanced datacenter and cloud computing, IT services and nanotech; business development at UA.RPA defense and security; Director, Borsch Ventures; promoter of the tech ecosystem in Ukraine;  past president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine; lecturer in entrepreneurship at Lviv Business School.  Mr. Kupych is a Board Member of De Novo, Ukrainian Venture Capital Association, and Ukraine Advisory Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee. He is also an accredited International Election Observer.

Olga Baranova
Counsel of Tax and IT practices at Arzinger

Olga Baranova is a tax and IT lawyer at Arzinger.  Arzinger is an independent law firm headquartered in Kyiv with regional offices in Western and Southern Ukraine.  For over 10 years, Arzinger has been among the lead firms providing high-quality legal support to clients throughout Ukraine. Among the firm’s many clients are top representatives of the international and local business.

Aleksey Mas
IT & Digital adviser at Kyivstar

Aleksey works in IT business since 1998. 
He is the head of Ukrainian Banner Network,, Ukrainian web-portal and Mail.UA, Webman. Moreover, he is one of the initiators of Ukrainian forum of Internet top-people - iForum.
Currently, he also provides training for startups and writes a book about philosophy of management in creative work groups.

Olena Skyrta

Olena is a journalist at, co-organizer and speaking coach at TEDxKNU, mentor at 1991 Open Data Incubator, and a co-founder of Speak2Me company that does public speaking, presentation & pitch training. One of their latest projects is coaching Ukrainian startups team to pitch at Techcrunch Disrupt.

Elitsa Zaimova
Director of International Business Development at Integrites

Elitsa has over 3 years of experience working at a management consulting and advisory firm in Washington, D.C., working with Sales and Marketing Directors at Fortune 500 companies. In this capacity, she assisted in the development of sales and marketing strategies tailored for each company to increase their market share. Additionally, she has completed several sales courses and has led trainings on the development of effective sales pitches and closing strategies. Most recently, Elitsa moved to Kyiv and joined Integrites, an international law firm, to lead their international business development efforts. Elitsa is also an advisor at IWCK (International Women’s Club in Kyiv) and an active volunteer working with several NGOs to support physically impaired kids and elderly people.

Dmitry Kalita

During last 3 years Dmitry Kalita is leading Intel in Ukraine. His team is focusing on Intel Corporation business development in three neighboring countries of Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. Roman Zinchenko is smart energy / green economy advocate and communications consultant. Since 2009 he develops eco-system for green startups, social entrepreneurship and sustainable innovations at Greencubator, Ukrainian energy innovations network (
The tech part of his careers started in 2000 in web projects, leading to bizdev role in Ukraine’s first venture capital firm. Before co-founding Greencubator Roman worked as financial communications and investment PR consultant. Between 2004 and 2008 Roman was financial PR/IR adviser for capital market transactions, serving IPOs and private placements of Ukraine’s leading companies and investment banks. 
He’s visiting lecturer in Ukrainian business schools - Kyiv School of Economics and Lviv Business School, focusing on green business models, art of presentation and storytelling.

Vitalii Chumak
Events and Partnerships manager, America House Kyiv

Vitalii Chumak works as Events and Partnerships manager at America House Kyiv. He manages an extensive number of public events at America House from concept development to completion and evaluation. Over the past years Vitalii worked for different international organizations (IREX, UEFA) and U.S. based newspapers. He was selected for participation in the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the United States Department of State and administered by IREX (International Research & Exchanges Board) to study for one non-degree year at North Dakota State University majoring in Journalism & Mass Communication (2008- 2009). Served as a 3rd person in Media Operations at UEFA EURO 2012 in Donetsk venue, managing a team of 50 volunteers. Member of Photographers. Ukraine group, one of the participants of the first wave of "Maidan. Human Factor" photo exhibit. Co-curator and organizer of the "Vanishing Point" photo exhibit about ongoing war in the Ukrainian East. Speaks Ukrainian, Russian, English and a bit of German.  

Christi Anne Hofland
Director, America House Kyiv

Christi Anne Hofland is the Director of America House in Kyiv, Ukraine.  She manages the overall operations of the Center, including a variety of innovative programs and events.  Christi Anne has extensive Ukraine experience and a background in USG programs in Ukraine. She completed an internship in the Public Affairs Section of U.S. Embassy Kyiv; taught as an instructor of English at the Center of Modern Foreign Languages at Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv; and established an art therapy program at the Odessa Children’s Rehabilitation Center on a Fulbright fellowship. She received multiple scholarships to study in Ukraine and Russia, including three U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships and a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship.  Christi Anne holds a Master’s of Public Administration with a certificate in International Development and a Master’s in Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies with a certificate in Transatlantic Studies from the University of Washington. She speaks Russian and Ukrainian.

Olga Harbovska
Social Media & Outreach Manager, America House Kyiv

Olha works as Social Media and Outreach Manager at America House Kyiv. For the past years she worked as a Project Coordinator for the Euro East region for the Media Neighbourhood project (BBC Media Action) and Future Leaders Exchange program assistant.
Olha has previously studied in the U.S. and participated in short term exchange programs to Poland as well as attended the Civic Education Week in Washington, D. C. A couple of her posts have been included into Oksana Zabuzhko's project Annals of Eyewitnesses: Nine months of the Ukrainian resistance. In 2015 Olha launched a project Healing Colors which aims to improve the atmosphere of Ukrainian healthcare facilities through  paintings and murals.
