Katie Hnida
Athlete & Author

Katie Hnida graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Psychology. She is a pioneer in the world of sports, being the first woman to play, and score points, in a NCAA Division One football game.  Her cleats and jersey are in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Katie will share her thoughts on why its OK to be great in a male dominated field as a woman and that we should embrace and use our female traits!

Event Judges

Jen Wege

Jen Wege is a Partner in MooDoos Limited Partnership, a private family Investment Fund based in Arizona, and a member of two Angel Groups in North Carolina, RTP Capital and the Wilmington Investor Network. Jen sits on the Board of Directors of Contract Pharmaceuticals Limited, based in Mississisauga, Canada, is an active Angel Investor, and is a sought-after mentor for entrepreneurs/startups, frequently serving as a judge for grant competitions. Her strength in Business Development, and sales/marketing strategy come from an 8-year Sales Career in Manufacturing with Steelcase, and she also ran a successful startup in ecommerce for several years. She holds an MBA from the Simmons College School of Management in Boston, MA.

John Garcia
Executive Vice President

John Garcia grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  He specializes in Economic/Business Development. John was Senior Officer of Economic Development for the University of New Mexico and was Director of Economic Development for the city of Albuquerque New Mexico. Currently John is Executive Vice President for the Homebuilders Association of Central New Mexico.

He has a strong business background with management experience in the Bennigan's Restaurant and the Marriott Hotel chains.  John, formerly Executive Director of the New Mexico Restaurant Association, and founded Hospitotally, Inc., an Albuquerque consulting business that specializes in customer service applications.

Leslie Hoffman
Community Development Professional

Leslie is a fourth generation New Mexican and principal at LEH Consulting Group. She began her career as a journalist, covering a wide range of topics as a newspaper and Associated Press reporter. A tour in the Peace Corps in El Salvador started her on a second career in community development, and Leslie went on to work as a practitioner in the U.S. microfinance sector where she served in various leadership roles leading business lending, portfolio quality and asset recovery, client service, communications, and strategic partnership development. Leslie launched LEH to focus on capacity building and management consulting for institutions that lift up underserved communities. She serves community development financial institutions, community colleges, nonprofits, community-based networks, government agencies, and small businesses in the United States as well as international aid organizations in Latin America and Africa. Leslie is also a professional faculty member at the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management where she has taught entrepreneurship at the undergraduate level and currently teaches nonprofit management at the graduate level.

David Kistin
Associate Consultant, UpSpring

David is a consultant with UpSpring, a boutique management-consulting firm supporting the design, growth and measurement of mission-driven, values-based ventures throughout the U.S. and around the world. UpSpring is based in Santa Fe, NM and Washington, DC and has generated more than $100 mm for triple bottom line efforts.

Deborah Burns

Deborah Burns is the CEO of investUS llc. An Albuquerque startup, investUS brings private investment funding for NM job creation and investUS is a New Mexico EB-5 regional center.  Prior to investUS, Deborah was an institutional investor in NYC, financial officer of a start-up company that became the largest publicly-traded company in NM, and Chief Lending Officer for a community bank.

Lisa Abeyta
Founder / CEO, APPCityLife, Inc., Cofounder / Chief Haute Ideas Officer, Hautepreneurs, LLC

Lisa Abeyta is Founder and CEO of APPCityLife, Inc., a civic tech corporation focused on connecting cities and people globally through a patented non-developer friendly mobile platform built on open data. She is also cofounder of Hautepreneurs, LLC, the premier network for women entrepreneurs in New Mexico, as well as HauteHopes, a nonprofit focused on helping women become financially independent by providing access to mentoring, scholarships and training. She is an Icon Next contributor at Huffington Post.

Abeyta serves on the Small Business Advisory Council for NM Congresswoman Michelle Grisham and the Albuquerque Women's Entrepreneur and Business Council. She has previously been the recipient of the Women In Technology Recognition award as well as a New Mexico Woman of Influence. She has served since 2013 as a judge for the International Stevie Business Awards for Women. She is often a guest speaker on the topics of smart cities, civic tech, STEM and women in tech

DeAnza Valencia Sapien

DeAnza Valencia Sapien is a licensed New Mexico attorney and engagement strategist with over fifteen years of experience in communications, public policy and community affairs. As a founding partner of the New Mexico based strategic consulting firm, The MVM Group, she developed and implemented the business accelerator, “The Velocity Project “ (TVP) for the City of Santa Fe.   TVP was an 8-week entrepreneurial boot camp that provided start-up companies with a dynamic and focused environment in which to develop new resources to build and implement growth strategies. Companies that were selected for in TVP in 2013 and 2014 learned from experienced entrepreneurs and dedicated peers how to develop a robust 100-day business plan with tactical action items to help them move their company forward faster.  Sapien is the former Executive Director of the Regional Coalition of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Communities and the former Deputy Director of the New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool’s Federal Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.  

Matthew Ayoub

Matthew Ayoub is an entrepreneur, real estate investor and UI/UX designer. He is the founder of Media Trove LLC, a technology startup building, a new background music service for businesses. Media Trove is one of the first eleven companies to be accepted into the ABQid accelerator. When he is not at Media Trove, Matthew manages his real estate investment company, Alpha Arietis LLC, which provides office and retail space to local small businesses and startups. Matthew has participated Startup Weekend Santa Fe and Startup Weekend Albuquerque events, leading and participating on finalist teams. Matthew has also coached at Startup Weekend Albuquerque and Startup Teen events.

Susan Evatt

Mentor and advisor to entrepreneurs, developing and directing programs to accelerate the growth of early stage tech companies in New Mexico. Experience spans management positions of increasing responsibility in the fields of nuclear power, aerospace and technology based economic development. Strengths include communication and presentation, team building, leadership and facilitation at all organizational levels.

Carrie Wiggins
CEO / Co-Founder

Carrie Wiggins is CEO and Co-founder of - a dynamic web tool to plan, budget and shop for projects.  With her husband they built itsums to solve a recurring problem in their household. She is a financially educated previous stay at home mom determined to turn daydreams into reality by showing what your project really takes and how much it will cost. She enjoys meeting and working with other women interested in joining the local entrepreneurship communit.

Shavonnah Tièra Collins
Managing Director, RedFlint

Shavonnah has a diverse background including being part of the initial organizing team of Startup Weekend Las Vegas and teaching Starting Entrepreneurial Ventures at the University of Nevada Las Vegas Lee Business school. She has a background in startup ventures and is heavily involved in the entrepreneur community. As a second-generation Las Vegan, Shavonnah is committed to helping companies start and grow in her hometown.
