Have an idea? Don't wait. Go for it.

Bring your ideas and launch an idea in one weekend. We'll start at 6 pm on Friday night, Nov. 11 at ELEVATE Breck in downtown Breck (505 South Main Street, Suite B-5). Pitch an idea or listen to pitches, vote and then we'll form teams, eat, drink and be merry. Teams will work Friday night, all day and night Saturday until the final team pitches on Sunday before the panel of judges. 

Startup Weekend is your opportunity to get support, join a team, focus and learn about entrepreneurship and launching a business. It's a 54-hour startup "crash course" with lots of fun and support.

Event Judges


Lucy Kay
CEO

Lucy Kay, CEO, Breckenridge Tourism Office (BTO), has extensive experience in the tourism industry, notably within the ski sector.   The BTO is a destination marketing and management organization which helps drive over $480 million in taxable sales revenue to Breckenridge, CO.   Kay previously held various executive roles within Vail Resorts including COO, Breckenridge Ski Resort and VP Marketing for Breckenridge and Keystone Resorts.  She held senior management roles at Copper Mountain Resort in both Marketing and HR.   As Principal, L. Kay & Associates, Kay supported clients including Intrawest, Replay Resorts, Telluride SkiCo, Vail Valley Jet Center, USA Pro Challenge.   She is an officer on several non-profit and industry association boards, as well as, a Governor-appointed Commissioner for the Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad. She holds a BA in Economics (University of Pittsburgh), Masters in International Management  (American Graduate School of International Management) and is a life-long learner.  


Jeff Schell
Founder, Rocky Mountain Patent & Quandary Group

Meet patent attorney Jeff Schell. His patent practice, Rocky Mountain Patent, advises startups and innovators across the country. 

Jeff also assists companies in their R&D processes as they refine their ideas. He honed his R&D skills, using tools related to lean design and process-based innovation, while helping to expand a well-known Michigan-based consulting business into Shanghai, China. 

His substantial international experience also includes several months in Costa Rica studying Human Rights in the Americas in conjunction with the Interamerican Court of Human Rights, in addition to study of European Union Law at University College Dublin, Ireland. While in college, Jeff lived in Croatia and Kosovo, where he studied the disintegration of Yugoslavia, and became exposed to the operations of the UN Peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo. 
Jeff's diverse experience includes a stint on the staff of the Chicago 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Bid committee. In that role, he worked closely with a number of professional athletes, Olympians and Paralympians, and upper level members of Chicago government, including Mayor Richard M. Daley. Jeff also interned on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. with a ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee. 

Jeff attended Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, graduating with degrees in Industrial Engineering & Management Sciences and Economics in 2004. He subsequently earned his Juris Doctor and a Masters in International Studies. In 2010, 

Jeff also earned a Masters in Medical Informatics Degree from Northwestern. Jeff separately studied economics at Harvard University, and in 2007, was a delegate at the Harvard China-India Development & Relations Symposium. 

On the side, Jeff coaches football at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denv


Jason Rush
Software Developer

Jason is a senior software developer at Panda Strike where he is currently working with Disney's Imagineering team to build a suite of software tools that facilitate building new rides and parks at Disney's various resorts. He has also worked on several IoT projects recently, including a smart thermostat and a project to communicate with programmable traffic signs.


David Knell
Director, TelNG

Dave started his career developing software at IBM.  A keen technologist and engineer, he's since founded and sold two telecoms businesses,
built a solar power plant, developed a platform for testing prototype internal combustion engines and is now opening a restaurant.

In his spare time, he can be found running (slowly), playing guitar (noisily and without a great deal of skill), sailing and skiing.


Dennis Lankes
Co Founder at Proximity Space

Former Marketing and Business Consultant with an emphasis on social and viral mediums. Experience in development of digital assets and taking these mediums to the next level of distribution; particularly online video, live broadcast, and web publishing.  

Currently working with new and existing startups through Proximity Space Coworking to focus on acceleration and development of small business ideas in small to medium markets. Assisting in growing entrepreneurial community in Western Colorado through events. We implement programs for direct consumer communication through public wifi, online ad purchasing, social media distribution, and video production made specifically for web consumption.  

I live the Abrams slogan "Ideas not Ads". These "ideas" help me put new businesses in touch with their clients. I am an action consultant, I use digital actions to create in-person experiences.

Presently co owner of - Proximity Space Coworking, Abrams Business Strategy, and 8750ALT Telluride Gym

Robert Cartelli
Associate Professor at Colorado Mountain College

Dr. Robert Cartelli holds Ph.D. in Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and a M.S. in Strategic Technology Management from Marlboro College in Brattleboro, Vermont.  Currently, Dr. Cartelli is a full-time Associate Professor in the Colorado Mountain College (CMC) business program.  Previous to CMC, he taught undergraduate and graduate-level business and technology-related courses at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont.  He has also taught graduate-level management information systems courses for schools in the Middle East and India.  As a dot-com boom and bust veteran, he has a strong e-business and e-commerce background.  Robert considers himself a lifelong ski bum and aims to ski 200+ days per year.


Doug Clayton
Director - 8150 High Altitude Entrepreneurs

Co-founder of 8150 High Altitude Entrepreneurs and owner of a Web Design Firm in the Vail Valley. Doug has been a developer since he was 15 years old and computers were saving programs on cassette tapes.


Mike Connolly
Organizer

Professional achievements – MBA from Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth.  Career started in commercial and investment banking (over $1.5 billion raised in debt and equity offerings), transitioned to become successful business and corporate development company executive for over 20 years (over 50 transactions completed in M&A, corporate partnerships, distribution agreements, technology licensing deals, etc.).  Moved to Summit county eight years ago and initially worked in financial and retirement planning with New York Life. Three years ago became Executive Director of the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District, a Summit county nonprofit organization that promotes stewardship of our local forest.


Tom Fellner
Co-Owner and CEO Imagine That, Inc.

Tom's experience in the industry dates back to 1993 when he received a B.A. in marketing and communications from NorthEast Wisconsin Technical College. Shortly after, he began working as a graphic production team leader at Schreiber Foods, Inc., where he remained for 17 years. As CEO and team leader for Imagine That, Tom brings his expertise in creative design, project management, brand strategy and user experience to Imagine That clients. Tom specializes in creating exceptional online experiences from small businesses to large corporations.


Sofia Figueira
Website Project Coordinator - Imagine That, Inc.

Sofia holds a dual B.S in industrial design and graphic design from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ). Since graduating she has worked as an innovation consultant in a variety of fields, with a focus on design thinking and strategy. Sofia loves to problem solve and strives to produce user-centered designs. Before moving to Colorado, she lived in New York City for 2 years where she graduated with a Master of Science in Strategic Design and Management from The New School. Today she is member of the Imagine That Team working as Website Project Coordinator.


Kristy Lee
Founder - KL Creative Design

Kristy Lee Gogolen founded KL Creative Design, a web and mobile technology group, in 2005. With a love of all things binary and a keen eye for design, she makes websites pretty-inside and out. In 2011, she founded LadyBits Dev, the mobile division of KL Creative Design, and released an iPhone altimeter app, Explore More. As a small business owner herself, she has a passion to see entrepreneurs succeed and grow. She can be tempted away from her computer by great snow, mountain wildflowers and shiny motorcycles.


Kimberly Swank
Founder - Swank Accounting

Ms. Kimberly Swank is the Managing Principal/ Founder of Swank Accounting, LLC. She has started several successful businesses and understands the challenges of owning a growing business. Ms. Swank specializes in organizing and clarifying business performance and providing expert level accounting/finance services.   Ms. Swank specializes in CFO/Tax Consulting, Accounting, Tax, and Non-profit accounting. She is also adept at structuring and streamlining processes of Finance, Accounting, and Treasury functions for firms.   In addition to being the Founder of Swank Accounting, LLC, Ms. Swank has worked in Public Accounting at Ernst and Young as a Senior Consultant in Risk Advisory services for Fortune 100 companies. She was the Vice President of Finance for a $1 billion dollar Private Equity firm. As a Director of Finance, she led the Accounting and Finance department of a $250 million revenue company.   Ms. Swank is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). She has a Masters in Accounting and Masters in Business Administration from University of Notre Dame. Kimberly also has a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from University of Florida.


Dick Humphrey
President/Founder Franchise BIZ Experts

Dick Humphrey is an award-winning, professional business executive with both Fortune 500 and start-up organizations. After 30 years working in the healthcare and telecommunication industries, he entered into the franchising business segment in 2008. Mr. Humphrey is the President and Founder of Franchise BIZ Experts LLC and is affiliated with the world’s largest franchise brokerage networks representing over 700 franchises in 350 plus Industry Categories. Mr. Humphrey is also the COO of FranAsia LLC, who, along with CEO Peter Wong and CFO Carl Birkelbach, specializes in bringing Franchise ownership to Asia or having investors, through E-2 or EB-5 options, invest in franchises in the United States. Plus, FBE has multiple Franchise Broker Associates and MOU agreements with both domestic and international partners throughout the world. 

Prior to establishing Franchise BIZ Experts LLC, Mr. Humphrey was an accomplished Worldwide Sales and Marketing Management Executive with thirty years of proven leadership success in global markets providing extensive experience in high technology Diagnostic Medical Imaging and Healthcare Information Systems, Medical Surgical Products plus Telecommunications' Industries in both Fortune 500 (General Electric Medical Systems, Philips Medical Systems, Toshiba Medical Systems, Johnson & Johnson) and venture start-up operations. 

Mr. Humphrey was the Managing Partner with Bogle & Associates, the largest Executive Search firm specializing in Healthcare Diagnostic Medical Imaging and Healthcare Information Systems. Prior to that he was VP Sales and Marketing for ClearVision Laser Centers and contributed to opening up over 60 medical laser facilities for Lasik procedures throughout the United States within a three-year period. Mr. Humphrey was the Business General Manager for Toshiba Medical Systems’ MR and CT businesses for North America, Marketing Director for Philips Medical Systems’ Ultrasound Division and National Product Sales Manager for General Electric Medical Systems’ Nuclear Medicine Group. Mr. Humphrey has held numerous field and corporate key management positions in General Management, Sales and Marketing throughout his professional career and has a lengthy history of technology development, introduction and market-share growth in each of the industries in which he was associated. 


Mr. Humphrey attended Los Angeles City College in Computer Science and Wichita State University in Business Administration. Mr. Humphrey is a veteran Marine aviator and has been in Summit County 15 years.

Steven O'Connor
Lawyer

University of Colorado Law School as member of National Mock Trial team, Chair of the James R. Carrigan Cup, and student attorney for University’s Civil Practice Clinic.

Steven prides himself on the diverse nature of his practice at the firm. Whether you arebeginning a new business, looking to establish an estate plan, have a complex civil matter which may proceed to trial, or difficult family law issue, Steven is available to provide you with advice and counsel.

Advanced experience with trial advocacy and legal negotiation he was awarded the University of Colorado Law School’s Family Law Certificate. At Carlson and Carlson; based largely on the commitment to a community first approach, and the opportunity to work side by side with founding members. Steven has proven himself an aggressive litigator, and is capable of advocating for clients in court in front of both judge and jury.

When not in the office, Steven is an avid skier, hiker, sailor, and occasional hunter. Steven lives in Frisco with his wife Ashley, and German Wirehaired Pointer, Nixon

Lindsey Danforth

Lindsey Danforth works in the field of Geospatial Information Systems (think of Google maps on steroids) and is also the co-founder of Girl Develop It Toledo. When not slaving away at the computer she enjoys high-adrenaline sports like ski racing and rock climbing.
