Join us October 13th-15th for an action packed weekend of education, application, and dedication. During our fourth annual Start-up Weekend we are excited to dive deep into the start-up methods and to engage participants in learning the methods and skills they need to succeed in their own start-ups.

Friday October 13th

5:30 pm
Dinner & Networking
Eat food, share ideas, practice pitches, get to know fellow participants. Dinner/Networking will be in the atrium of the CEEE on UNI's campus.

5:45 pm
Arrive at the venue and get checked in. Registration will be held in the atrium of the CEEE building of UNI's campus.

6:30 pm
Welcome & Speakers
Review agenda for the weekend and introduce speakers, coaches, and community leaders and what the weekend has in store. The welcome will be held in the auditorium of the CEEE.

7:00 pm
Pitches Start
Line up to give your pitch. We want to hear from as many of you as possible! No idea is too little or too big.

8:00 pm
Voting & Team Selection
Attendees vote for the top pitches and use the top ideas to form teams for the weekend.

8:15 pm
Begin Working
Start to formalize teams and settle into your work space. You may stay and work until 11 p.m. Facilitators will check in with each team before you leave for the evening.

Saturday October 14th

7:00 am
Doors Open
Doors will open for you to get started at 7:00 a.m.

8:00 am
Breakfast & Coffee
A light breakfast and coffee will be served. All teams and meals on Saturday will be in the BCS building on UNI's campus.

9:00 am
Workshop Session #1
Two concurrent workshops will be held for attendees in Rooms 30 and 33 of the BCS building.

11:15 am
Mentor Meetings
Mentors will arrive to ask questions and give feedback. Be sure to listen to them for their expertise.

12:00 pm
Served in hallway at the BCS building.

3:00 pm
Workshop Session #2
Concurrent workshops for attendees in Rooms 30 & 33 in the BCS building.

4:30 pm
Mentor Meetings
Coaches help teams one-on-one. They are here to help!

5:30 pm
Will be served in the bottom floor of the BCS building.

7:00 pm
Organizers will check-in with each team to see how you are progressing towards pitching on Sunday.

8:00 pm
Work & Wrap Up
Work the rest of the evening to prepare for the Sunday pitch. Workspace will be open until 11 p.m.

Sunday October 15th

8:00 am
Arrive, simple breakfast & coffee

10:00 am
See where everyone is at and schedule pitch practice sessions.

12:00 pm
Lunch will be served in BCS building.

1:30 pm
Mentor Meetings
Last chance with the mentors for final touches before pitch practice.

2:00 pm
Presentation Prep & Tech Check
Final hours of worktime should be focused on perfecting your presentation, tech-check for final presentations also takes place. Practice pitches will be in the auditorium of the CEEE.

4:00 pm
Final Presentations
Teams will pitch their findings and creations from the weekend.

5:15 pm
Grab some dinner while the judges deliberate and pick the winners.

5:35 pm
Judging & Awards
Announce the winners of the weekend.

5:45 pm
Final thoughts and thank you's for the weekend.

6:00 pm

Executive Director of Business & Community Services at UNI

Randy serves as Executive Director of Business and Community Services (BCS) at UNI. BCS is UNI’s umbrella economic development organization that provides an integrated approach to meeting the needs of businesses, entrepreneurs, and communities throughout Iowa. BCS serves external constituents through specialized executive-level professional development, market research and analysis, guidance for environmentally sound practices, entrepreneurship, and community and economic development guidance. Randy also serves as the director of UNI’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and the Institute for Decision Making.  

Cassie Grimsman

Cassie works on the economic development team at the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber, focusing on existing business, manufacturing, workforce development, and small business development. Cassie’s worked with various economic development organizations including Enterprise Ireland, the Greater Des Moines Partnership and UNI’s Center for Business Growth and Innovation.
