Calling all startup junkies, makers, inventors, coders, and sports enthusiast!

We are looking for the next big thing in Sports, Fitness, and Performance

Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event, where attendees pitch ideas, form teams and launch companies/products. The event is very community focused and provides a place for budding entrepreneurs to find co-founders, mentors and momentum for their ideas.

Participants have 60 seconds pitch an idea of concept , the pitches are whittled down to the top ideas, and then teams form around the ideas to come out with several developed companies. Finally, the weekend culminates with demonstrations in front of an audience of judges and potential investors on Sunday for Demo Day.

Sports Academy is the only fully integrated, multi-disciplinary athletic training and integrated sports medicine facility designed to elevate the performance of athletes of all ages and ability levels.  Facilitated by premier coaches, certified trainers, and medical and recovery professionals, we provide the tools, inspiration, and guidance necessary for every athlete to excel.  Combined with state-of-the-art technology, a biomechanics lab, sports science, and the development of mental fitness and acuity, our sport-specific and athlete-specific programs are designed to guide athletes toward their optimal state of performance.

Event Judges

Ron Heller
Managing Partner

Mr. Heller co-founded Peritus Asset Management, Inc. in 1995 and is the firms CEO. As CEO and Senior Portfolio Manager, he is responsible for portfolio management and the trading and execution activities for Peritus, ensuring that the firm’s strategy is properly implemented as well as running the day to day operations. Over the past 23 years, Mr. Heller has developed long standing relationships across Wall Street for both new issue and secondary trading in both the leveraged loan and high yield bond assets classes. As high yield bonds are not an “exchange-traded” asset class, the ability to find, negotiate and acquire bonds is a critical component of portfolio performance, particularly in the secondary market. Additionally, Mr. Heller has been responsible for the maintenance of all custody and investment dealer relationships and is a member of the investment committee.

Beginning in 1993, Mr. Heller spent two years at Smith Barney as a financial consultant. Prior to Mr. Heller’s investment career, he had a seven year career in professional football with the San Francisco 49ers, winning Super Bowl XXIII, then later with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks, retiring in 1993.
Mr. Heller attended Oregon State University where he played football while majoring in Kinesiology and secondary education. He received his California State Coaching Certification through UCSB and also attended the University of San Francisco in his off-season with the San Francisco 49ers, studying business accounting and tax law.  Mr. Heller holds his Series 7 license.
Mr. Heller grew up in Clark Fork, Idaho a small town of 400 people in the northern rocky mountains where he still goes to archery hunt for elk and deer and gets on the water for some fishing any time he can.  He has resided in Santa Barbara since 1989, buying his first house with his Super Bowl XXIII check.  He has been married for 27 years to Connie Heller and has four children, three daughters Ali 26, Morgan 23, Brooke 20 and a son, Mitch 17.
