Join entrepreneurs to pitch businesses for social good at the first ever Startup Weekend Detroit for Social Entrepreneurs !!

Pitch an idea. Form a team. Launch a product. All in 54 hours. 

(The weekend AFTER Memorial Day Weekend...)

    Nima Adelkhani
    Founder of PITME

    Nima Adelkani is the founder of PITME, a bridge organization between Middle Eastern startups and Silicon Valley.Nima is former head of business development for the Founder Institute, a global accelerator with operations in over 30 cities. He also helped manage The Funded and their pitch and networking event Founder Showcase.During his tenure, Nima helped launch over 300 startups. Prior to this, Nima worked in international business development.     Zain Ismail

    Zain is relationship builder, connector, and a healthcare innovator, with a passion for customer service. Zain is bilingual (English/ French) and a dual citizen (Canadian/ American).  Zain serves as Manager of Innovation, Partnerships, Communication, and Development at Leamington District Memorial Hospital (LDMH), connecting and aligning people, ideas, and strategies between the hospital, foundation, and Hospice Erie Shores Campus. In addition, Zain serves as a strategist for the International Centre for Health Innovation at the Ivey Business School, and is a  Youth Entrepreneurship Coach for Rise Asset Development. Lastly, Zain is the founder and business development lead for The Moment App, an app that allows students to communicate their mental health history at the point of care. 

    Zain has a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship & strategy from the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor, and has completed an executive program in health system innovation at the Ivey Business School at Western University.

    Jill Ford
    Angel Investor & Advisor

    As Mayor Duggan’s Special Advisor, Jill Ford heads the City of Detroit’s innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. Jill chose to come to Detroit from the San Francisco Bay Area, where as an Angel Investor and Advisor she transformed emerging businesses using strategies forged in mobile gaming.  Jill brings a wealth of global leadership in mobile and games, including heading Disney Mobile’s worldwide distribution to mobile manufacturers and running Motorola’s global games usage. A global citizen, Jill ran a company in Ghana that discovered, developed, and funded new entrepreneurs and she has traveled to more than 15 countries. Jill combines a Wharton MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Harvard University.


    Chris Nemeth
    Senior Director of Social Enterprise

    Chris has thirty-five years of leadership experience in the areas of Sales, Marketing, Organizational Development, Training, Product and Market Development and Social Enterprise. He has a B.A in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a M.A. in Marketing from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo. Chris is currently the President of Hopeful Harvest, a social enterprise subsidiary of Forgotten Harvest and Senior Director of Social Enterprise for Forgotten Harvest, the nation’s largest Fresh Food rescue organization.



    Jessica Robinson
    Implementation Manager

    Jessica Robinson is Implementation Manager with Techstars where she works to build a global ecosystem that empowers entrepreneurs to bring new technologies to market wherever they choose to build their business. With 18 mentorship-driven accelerator programs worldwide, Techstars exists to support the world’s most promising entrepreneurs throughout their lifelong journey. Before joining Techstars, Jessica helped grow Zipcar’s innovative car sharing model as Seattle Marketing Manager, San Francisco Bay Area Locations Manager, and in new cities and airports in North America as Market Launch Manager. Her work in 2013 as project manager for Zipcar’s Detroit expansion initially brought her to SE Michigan, and she is now proud to call the Motor City home.



    Romy Gingras

    Romy is the founder and Managing Partner of  Gingras Global, LLC  and Gingras Global Groups, L3C.  Both companies focus on sustainability and standards for social enterprise and impact investing.  Gingras Global is based in Michigan serving a local and global clientele.Romy is a published author on social enterprise and frequent guest speaker. Romy is also the host of the popular new podcast show Bonfires of Social Enterprise which is followed in more than 40 countries.Prior to the 2011 Gingras Global launch Romy spent 23 years in the financial industry consulting both corporate clients and small start-up business owners on financial sustainability, best practices, and operational efficiency. She has a strong expertise in investment and planning methodologies.Romy serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Detroit Social Enterprise Alliance, Advisory Council to the National Social Enterprise Alliance, and Advisor for Inforum Philanthropy Next Michigan. Romy obtained a Finance degree from Northern Michigan University in 1990. She then went on to obtain a CLU designation from the American College, and a Certified Financial Planning designation from the College of Financial Planning.Romy is spent most of her childhood in the Petoskey area of Michigan and is currently living in the southeast Michigan area with her husband, Christopher. Romy is greatly inspired by her two adult sons, Jentzen and Connor, also living in the southeast Michigan area.

    Alari K. Adams

    Alari K. Adams is the principal attorney with A|Squared Legal Group, which specializes in advising businesses with their respective legal matters and human resources management.  She has nearly a decade of progressive experience in matters relating to business and employment law. Prior to forming A|Squared, Alari attained broad experience counseling and advising profit and non-profit entities with issues pertaining to labor and employment law, human resources, corporate governance, and corporate transactions. 

    Alari received her Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School and graduated from The Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and American Bar Association. Alari is admitted to practice in the State of Michigan and the United States Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

    Dave Anderson
    Co-founder, Bamboo Detroit

    Dave Anderson is a tech entrepreneur with a strong background in electrical engineering, program management and finance. He’s a co-founder of Bamboo Detroit, a popular members-only co-working space in Downtown Detroit and the Founder & CEO of Health Crunch, a mobile startup using predictive analytics to suggest healthy eating alternatives in real-time. Dave sits on the board of the Detroit Historical Museum, enjoys serving the community through youth mentorship and entrepreneurial growth initiatives, and is a University of Michigan graduate. 


    Sandy Barris
    CEO & President of Business Marketing Services

    Sandy Barris, CEO & President of Business Marketing Services, a local Detroit direct response marketing company. Sandy is also the CEO & Chief Accelerant at Call On Fire LLC  the creator of the iPhone app Sales Goals On Fire Pro. He is the author of Sell More of Your Products, Services and Ideas, plus has written over 97 articles, reports and guides. He's been married more than 34 years (to the same woman), has 4 kids and 2 grandkids. Hobbies include cooking, home brewing and reading over 75 books a year. Sandy holds a BS in Business Management from Lawrence Technological Institute and a Masters from the University of Hard Knocks.


    Paul Chambers
    CEO at Element5

    Never one to work for another, Paul Chambers actually began his entrepreneurship rather late in life - in fifth grade. From then on, he's been his own boss, going on to co-found Detroit IT, Mac Detroit, Element5, and holding company, Core3 Solutions. Paul has been recognized by Crain's Detroit Business as a 20 In Their 20's. In his spare time Paul collects arcade games and oversees the digital marketing efforts of The Gentleman's Boxs. Paul is married and is ruled by his five-year-old twin daughters and one-year-old son.


    Enkaku Daruma

    Enkaku Daruma (Scott Mangis)Is an American Zen Monk from a small temple outside of Tokyo. Daruma-san was ordained in 2013 following a journey of study, practice and meditation that started nearly twenty years earlier.Daruma-san’s experience is focused on spiritual and personal development, with a strong understanding of how science and quantum theory is beginning to show what eastern philosophies have known for thousands of years.In 2013 Daruma-san left the corporate world to focus on his Zen practice. His prior experience ranges from a 20-year career in the US Marine Corps to nearly a decade of work in the financial sector.His military career spanned over 70 countries and over 4000 hours as a Hercules flight engineer. He is a former Series 3 Licensed commodity broker and worked as a market and economic analyst, trader, private equity analyst and in business development.Daruma-san’s wide range of understanding means he knows stress, pressure and the demands placed upon us in our professional lives.     Meredith Kerekes

    ​Meredith is passionate about emerging businesses - how they succeed and how they grow. She has worked with entrepreneurs and entrepreneurially-minded executives and organizations for over ten years in New York, Los Angeles and Detroit. She crafts growth and innovation strategies for startups through Fortune 500 corporations; as well as the stakeholders, investors and communities that support them. She currently resides as the entrepreneur-in-residence at the Detroit Creative Corridor Center. 


    Scott Kloustin
    CTO, Funding Roots

    Scott Kloustin is the CTO of Funding Roots, a real estate focused investment crowdfunding startup, and also helps clients with various marketing and web development projects. He spends his days at Bamboo Detroit co-working space where he works on his startup and helps Bamboo members with their technology needs. Scott has appeared on several startup-related panels, including discussing the local Detroit startup community and investment crowdfunding developments. Scott is a graduate of Michigan's Ross School of Business.


    Pavan Muzumdar

    Pavan is Revalue’s Conductor, a defined role that facilitates, leads, and prioritizes the strategic initiatives, execution, and tracks the overall progress of the company. Additionally, he manages the investment analysis, sales objectives, and finances of the company.
    Blending his 15 years of experience in executive leadership roles of family businesses with his love of financial analysis and entrepreneurial endeavors, Pavan brings a fundamentals-based analytical approach back to the financial services industry.

    In addition to his work at Revalue, Pavan is also the Founder and Managing Director of PCS Insight, a company dedicated to making organizations more effective.  It accomplishes this mission by helping companies implement icube™ a system and method that enables them to articulate their vision, craft a compelling strategy, and execute for excellence.

    Pavan has experience directing operations in IT, wholesale and retail distribution, as well as other matters including business development, capital raising, divestitures, litigation management, and turnarounds. He is a CFA charter holder, has master's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, and a bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Bombay.


    Natalia Petraszczuk
    Co-Founder, VisionBoards.co

    Natalia has a B.S. in International Relations from Michigan State University and is a certified Life Coach from the World Coaching Institute.  She has been the Executive Director of various non-profit organizations, and is highly experienced in business development.

    Natalia and her team created Visionboards.co - a web-based motivational and productivity tool - in just 54 hours at the 2013 Detroit Startup Weekend and earned the team a 1st place finish and qualified them for entry to the Global Startup Battle, sponsored by Google and UP Global. After a public vote that earned them top-ten finishes in every competition category, VisionBoards.co was selected by a panel of judges as the winner of the Innovation Circle, beating out 2,300 teams from over 200 cities worldwide. 

    In February 2014 the company was featured at San Francisco’s LAUNCH Festival which helped them to capture nearly 1,500 pre-registered beta users in just over a week. The concept has drawn interest from major investors, including but not limited to Shark Tank’s Mark Cuban, and has also been featured in major media outlets including Crain’s Detroit, StartupNation Radio, Trendhunter, and Michipreneur.


    William "Bill" Thomason

    I'm a Detroit native son but I spent the last 20 years
    in the SF bay area. I have exited two start-ups and worked for two Venture Capital firms - Including JP Morgan, where my team were seed investors in Pandora Radio, Revolution Foods, Tesla Motors and 1st Solar to name a few of our more recognizable portfolio
    companies.


    Monica Wheat
    Founder @ Parallel Ventures & Digerati Girls

    Monica Wheat is a Strategist, Educator, and Venture Developer. She is the past Co-Founder and Partner of Pixel DSi, a digital strategy consultancy and Parallel Ventures, an incubator focused on branded innovation partnerships and startup ecosystem development. Ms. Wheat is also the Founder and Executive Director of Digerati Girls, Inc. / Digerati Kids, a non-profit that has helped over 5,500 Detroit-area students gain skills and an introduction to digital technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

    Ms. Wheat has extensive experience in program management focused on digital, social, and economic development efforts.
