Welcome to CSU East Bay's 2nd Startup Weekend! Startup Club on campus is bringing students and professionals together to experience the process of building a startup in 54 hours! Participants have the opportunity to network, learn new skills, build teams and pitch their business idea to a panel of judges. Mentors and coaches will be available to help guide each team to launching your own business.

Orin Laney
KeyNote Speaker

Orin Laney has many years of experience in founding and running small high technology enterprises. At various times he has been a computer dealer, a consultant, an author and seminar provider, and an expert witness. His credentials include an MSEE degree, an MBA, registration as a Professional Engineer, and certification as an Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineer. He is a Life Senior Member of the IEEE and an IEEE-USA National Speaker who has presented at over 100 campuses.

Currently he is the owner and president of Atwood Research, which manufactures custom electronics.  Managing this business includes experience in national marketing campaigns, publishing catalogs, mailing list development, trade show exhibition, and technical and opinion articles for trade press publication.  On the technical side, Mr. Laney is an expert in signal integrity and EMC, is a designer of magnetic components such as transformers, inductors, and sensors, and enjoys challenging high speed analog and mixed signal design.

Mr. Laney has served as an advisor for San Jose City College, as a science fair judge, as a motivational speaker for at-risk high school students, and in various roles for IEEE committees and society chapters. He enjoys presenting at college campuses on such topics as career management, intellectual property rights, and starting a business.

Tim Wat
Faculty at California State University, East Bay

Tim Wat has enjoyed a 20-year career in executive management, business development, technology, and finance. He has turned around industry influencers, helped take companies public, led diverse teams, and planned and executed successful strategy. As an instructor, he is committed to preparing his students for the real world, while also challenging them to attain far more than mere material success. Students concur that Wat’s long experience in executive leadership drives his engagement in the classroom. Aside from teaching, Wat enjoys an active career as a professional jazz pianist throughout Northern California.

Stan Lewandowski
Partner at K&L Gates LLP

Stan Lewandowski, a partner at K&L Gates LLP, a global law firm, counsels companies in the U.S., Europe, and South America on financing, operations, development, and other strategic transactional issues, primarily in the technology and renewable energy sectors. He represents emerging growth companies at every stage of the pipeline—from start-up to liquidity. He works on a variety of strategic growth issues, including venture capital and private equity financings, private offerings, joint ventures, and M&A. Combining his experience representing Central and Eastern European companies with his Silicon Valley background, Stan has worked closely with investors and companies on domestic, in-bound, and out-bound transactions, as well as on-shore and off-shore structures. Stan also has significant experience advising developers, their affiliates and investors, and financial institutions in connection with commercial and industrial distributed and utility-scale solar and wind projects, with a total value in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Stan earned his LL.M. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He received his master of laws and diploma from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland. He also earned a diploma from the University of Cambridge in England.

Ranjini Acharya
Associate at K&L Gates

Ranjini Acharya advises clients in the U.S., Asia Pacific and Europe on intellectual property issues.  Ranjini focuses her practice primarily on litigation, and has prosecuted and defended clients’ interests in complex matters relating to patent, copyright, trademark, domain name, freedom of information, and e-commerce disputes.  Ranjini has also worked on strategic IP portfolio development and management with her clients, including formulating plans for trademark prosecution and branding in the US and foreign jurisdictions, and structuring transfer and licensing agreements for the commercialization of companies’ IP.  Prior to relocating to California, Ranjini practiced in Sydney, Australia.

Mike Massey

Mike Massey is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at CSU East Bay, and has been at the university since 2013. His scientific specialty is nutrients and contaminants in soil and groundwater. In 2008, with his mentor Dr. Jessica Davis, Mike co-founded Thin Air Nitrogen Solutions, a company focused on empowering farmers worldwide to grow their own microbial fertilizer. The company has been working on a "new agricultural revolution" ever since.

Sanjiv Goyal is the CEO of Droisys, which he co-founded in 2003. Sanjiv is considered a thought leader on the Internet of Things and has a keen passion for the future of mobile and shopper engagement. Sanjiv is a successful serial entrepreneur and pioneer of emerging technology applications in business. He brings 25+ years of business acumen from several Fortune 500 companies, most notably from IBM, Autonation, Mastech, GMS, and RMS. 

He grew with progressive leadership roles in corporate strategy, business development, and management. 

Fortune 1000 organizations like Kelloggs, Heinz, Caesars and many more trust Droisys for Innovation. It's not enough to just have a good idea. Only when you act, when you implement, then it matters. Under his leadership Droisys has build amazing solutions which leverages emerging technologies; ibeacons, Augmented Reality, NFC, brain sensors, Virtual Reality and more. He advise CPG, retail and casinos on consumer engagement and shopper marketing. 

Sanjiv is an active angel investor with a successful high-tech portfolio. Sanjiv has been pivotal in mentoring promising new entrepreneurs and has won awards for several of his innovations; most note-worthy, is the location based contesting platform. Every single bottle of Heinz ketchup served in restaurants is labeled with it. He has architected first automatic vehicle location system of Singapore in 1996, since then he is focused on Innovation. 

As Angel Investor, he is looking for startups leveraging mobile in Digital marketing, Retail, Healthcare, Gaming, Hospitality. He has invested in Vriti, Fanminder, Admaxim, Appgravity, Gameloot, Raffity, Ebsavvy, Pregame, Mobifusion, Edseva, Demars Group, Mobiglue, Pyxa, SampleUP, iShopthrifty, Mobiglue, Direct 401K and more.

He believes in supporting our youth and focuses his philanthropic duties on children’s charities.

Michael Gomez
Head of UXD: Global Mobility Practice

Michael Gomez is the Global Head of UXD at UST Global, a multinational provider of IT services and solutions, headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California. He has 15 years of experience in User Interface Design in the high tech industry. He started his user interface (UI) career during the dotcom era. He worked at organizations such as, MarketFusion, and the Space and Science Laboratory at UC Berkeley, where he was a digital manager creating Web  UI experiences for NASA's educational space programs. Working at Intel, he designed UI for Intel Centrino and Celeron chip's Web configuration tools. He also built mobile UI solutions for companies such as Virgin Mobile and, where his work was featured at the Mobile Congress in Barcelona. He later founded a user interface design and tech consulting company FuegoStudio, and developed a social mobile application called Citymambo for feature phones. Through his agency, Michael developed UI solutions for diverse audiences and platforms, including companies like Brocade, Sage, and HP. He then became the Director of UI for mobile applications at Kony, a global provider of a multi-channel mobile platform where he managed and mentored a global team. At Kony, he developed mobile UI experiences for Fortune 500 companies like Southwest Airlines, United, H&R Block, Citibank, HSBC, Hyatt, Marriot, Blue Shield, Aetna, Davita, Astra Seneca, Toyota, Nissan, Infiniti, and Coca-Cola. Currently, Michael manages the user experience design for UST Global’s top logos in aerospace, military tech, healthcare, and retail which include United Technology Corporation (UTC), and Navistar. He's an entrepreneur and creative visionary behind the video social shopping platform Mediatapp, and advisor and investor in the social communication tool Vobok. 

Michael studied mechanical and electrical engineering at Colegio Guayaquil in Ecuador, and digital web authoring at College of Marin Multimedia Campus in Kentfield, CA. 

Brad Wells
Vice President Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer at CSUEB

Brad Wells has served since July 2011 as the Vice President Administration and Finance/CFO at California State University, East Bay responsible for an array of business and financial functions including accounting, procurement, logistics, finance, internal audit, budget, human resources, payroll, risk management, audit, facility operations, capital design and construction, commercial activities, university police, admissions, registrar and financial aid.  Prior to arriving at CSUEB, Brad was the Senior Vice President for Development with a private for the profit developer Urban Housing Communities LLC in Santa Ana, CA where he oversaw planning, entitlement, and financing for low-income housing tax-credit development projects in California and Hawaii. Brad also served as the Vice President, Finance and Administration for The J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, CA and managed major financial and administrative functions. During the 1990s, Brad worked of the Office of the Chancellor of the California State University where he served in several roles including Assistant Vice Chancellor, Financial Services and managed a broad range of financial services including accounting, risk management, treasury and investments, procurement and contract services, and system wide financial standards on behalf of the California State University twenty-three campus system.

Suraj Powar
Technical Product Manager at PayPal

Bob Roohparvar
President and CEO at Batteroo Corporation

Dr. Farzan Roohparvar, also known as Bob, Ph.D. is the President of DigitalOptics Corporation since March 2011. Dr. Roohparvar is the President of Imaging & Optics at Tessera MEMS Technologies, Inc. He served as Vice President and General Manager for Broadcom. He has also held management positions at Fairchild Semiconductor and Xicor. Dr. Roohparvar is an Associate Professor of Computer Engineering at California State University, East Bay. He is an Inventor of multiple patents relating to semiconductor technology. He has also taught at the University of Nebraska and Iowa State University. He holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University.

Michael Liao
Managing Director at Lab360.

Michael Liao is Managing Director at Lab360.  Prior to 360, Michael spent 8 years at CSVCP, a seed stage VC fund where he invested in technology companies from software outsourcing to fabless IC design companies.  Michael also co-founded 3 startups, and learned tremendously from 2 successful exits and a humbling failure.  Michael holds a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Furqan Rydhan
CTO at Bebo

Furan Rydhan is the CTO of Bebo (, previously was founder and CTO of AppLovin ( a leading mobile advertising network. Furqan has been working in technology as an entrepreneur since a very young age, starting his first company at the age of 17. A serial entrepreneur, Furqan has founded numerous companies and been a part of a handful of engineering teams. Working on everything from big data analytics to mobile products, Furqan enjoys being a part of all things technology. Furqan spends his time tinkering with social consumer products and is always trying to find the next big thing to build. He also spends his time actively advising numerous startups in Silicon Valley. Furqan is a technology guy with a passion for startups, engineering and building things with technology that affect everyone.

Michele LaCagnina
e-Commerce Manager at

Michele LaCagnina is a co-founder and e-Commerce Manager of, an online gallery of art jewelry featuring the work of independent artists. She came to the startup world via a long and circuitous route, always interested in fashion and jewelry. She is fascinated by processes, systems and theories, especially when human-centered, which led her to pursue a degree in Linguistics as an undergrad. She followed up with an Associates in Fashion Design.
The fast pace of the apparel industry satisfied Michele for a number of years. She worked for large West Coast brands like Levi Strauss & Co., Nordstrom, Mervyns, The North Face, and Gap Inc. Her favorite part of the corporate environment has been managing and mentoring people.  Nothing satisfies Michele more than helping others attain their personal and professional goals.

After receiving her MBA, Michele--along with two partners--founded Byzantium Jewelry, which covers all sales, marketing and tech aspects of selling online: everything from photography to product listings to collecting state sales taxes. This model allows artists to spend their time doing what they excel at: making art. 

Michele continues to be an active participant in the CSUEB MBA Alumni Association, and seeks out opportunities to mentor young entrepreneurs. Recently, she was a speaker at Alumni Connect, an organization designed to connect graduating MBAs to startup founders and tech industry leaders. In April, she will be mentoring at East Bay’s Startup Weekend. Staying connected to young talent enables Michele to engage in her passion for continuous learning and to give back to the community that nurtured her as she pursued her professional goals. 

Austin Ford
Principal Mobility Solutions Consultant at Oracle

Austin Ford from Belmont, CA, is technology start up marketing and sales veteran, part of 2 successful acquisitions ($15M & $70M), as well as a repeated success in small and medium business revenue and brand growth in motorsports sales and marketing. Via acquisition, Austin is currently a mobile solutions consultant with Oracle's emerging mobile technology division, having focused on the mobile technology segment since 2007. Austin and his wife live in San Carlos with their dog Buster, and he enjoys outdoor sports including mountain biking, and motorcycles. 

Baruch Saeed
Entrepreneurial COO and Chief Scientist - Strategy, Analytics and Business Operations

Baruch Saeed is an entrepreneur and executive with over 25 years of experience in strategy, analytics, business operations, teaching and consulting at PayPal, software start-ups, San Jose State University and The Boston Consulting Group.  Baruch holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California at Berkeley and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  
In his spare time, Baruch provides pro bono consulting services to nonprofits as an account director at the Taproot Foundation. Baruch and his wife, Sophie, enjoy hiking, mountain biking, tennis, traveling, watching movies and playing with their dogs, Lulu and Reeses.

Cuong Nguyen
Software Engineer at Facebook

Cuong Nguyen is a software engineer at Facebook Inc, where he helps the company move forward with a stable infrastructure. Nguyen was a research intern at Fujitsu in 2014, and a research assistant at the National University of Singapore until 2012, where he also completed his Bachelor of Computer Science in 2010. He obtained his Master's degree in Computer Science at University of California, Berkeley in 2015.

Ian Pollock
Assistant Professor at CSU East Bay

Ian Pollock holds a Master of Fine Art from the University of California, Berkeley, is an Assistant Professor of Art and the Director of the Graduate Multimedia Program at the California State University, East Bay. His creative work with communications technologies is featured in several anthologies of digital media art. In addition to the generation of fruitful collaborations in Guerrilla Grafting, his recent work includes mapping prejudice and developing an after-school program in neuroscience and game making.

Reinaldo Normand
Entrepreneur, Author, Startup advisor, Speaker

Reinaldo Normand is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience in founding and running bootstrapped and venture-backed technology startups, as well as in doing business abroad. He has been featured in media outlets such as NBC, Business Week, Venture Beat, Monocle, Le Monde and others.     

His book about Silicon Valley and its culture reached hundreds of thousands of readers in LATAM. He holds a BSc in Computer Information Systems, an MBA and speaks five languages.  Reinaldo has lived in São Paulo, Mexico City, Shanghai, San Diego and currently resides in San Francisco, California. In his free time, he loves to mentor young entrepreneurs around the world.

Catherine Jenkins

Dr. Kate Jenkins is a software engineer for Ejenta, Inc, a startup in San Francisco that uses artificial intelligence to monitor and reason about behavioral information (human-human and human-computer).  For projects spanning industry verticals from space to government to healthcare, she is responsible for hardware integration and sensor streaming (proximity, gesture, social dynamics).  She co-founded her first company in 2004 and has since published more than 35 peer-reviewed articles on advanced materials for magnetoelectric sensing and high performance computing.  She is a Senior Member of IEEE (magnetics, CES) and in 2015-2016 will be the student activities chair for IEEE Region 6.

Kris Riley

Just another entrepreneur trying to take over the world one idea at a time. 

Kris has 3+ years experience organizing Startup Weekend events. His expertise is in payments, e-commerce, hospitality technology, product strategy, and positioning. He's started 2 businesses and is working on his 3rd currently. 

I love the startup world and mentoring/helping people mold their ideas into MVPs and eventually into validated businesses. The magic is in helping them realize that an idea needs legs to grow. And these legs are built out of involvement, sharing and doing. Let's go! 

Sonny Tosco

Sonny is a 2006 graduate of West Point. Born to immigrant parents, Sonny learned about hard work and perseverance at an early age. He is a proven combat leader with a heart for creating businesses. Sonny is a "hands on" learner and a serial entrepreneur at heart who will do a great job leading his company. He internalized what it means to hustle and operates on a "sink or swim" mentality each and every day. Noopur Gupta

Noopur Gupta is Staff Engineer/ Technical Product Manager with entrepreneur spirit at Samsung Research America. She has 9+ years of software industry experience in product development/management for both mobile and web platforms. She has extensive experience in UX, design and development of both native and web apps with domain expertise in Maps, Indoor Maps, Indoor positioning/localization and Analytics. 
She has wide industry experience working in Research labs, Real Estate, Telecom, Healthcare, Media, Airline and Non Profit industries.

Trevor Buswell
Product Manager at F50

Trevor founded and exited his first company in college (thanks to Startup Weekend). He has built 2 IoT companies, fully bootstrapped, and holds a variety of experience in B2C, health tech, fintech, and SaaS. Trevor has been a Product Manager at F50, a VC fund, and is now working in the VC space in SF. He also has deep knowledge working with Chinese, Russia, French, and Swedish manufacturers and investors. His most recent venture is building an IoT device and app that protects health care data through end to end encryption.

Kyle Billings

Kyle Billings is a founder and UI designer from Boston, Massachusetts. He began working with artists and venues as a designer in the music industry before freelancing as a front end developer with startups in Boston and Providence. Kyle now works as lead product designer with Productgram, Inc., designing user interfaces and experiences with secondary market technologies

Dellaena Maliszewski

Norman Tran
Interaction Designer at Declara

Norman Tran is a Product Designer at Declara, a Peter Thiel-backed startup helping people get smarter, faster. His background spans multiple disciplines and continents, from digital strategy in NY, to technology consulting in Singapore. He holds a Master Certificate in Systems Design and Project Leadership from Cornell and a BA in MIS from UCI. An avid advocate for learning apprenticeships, Norman Tran has been mentored by Laura Klein (UX for Lean Startups) and Kate Rutter (Adaptive Path) at Tradecraft as an Inaugural Design Scholar. 

Recently Norman has been studying under the creators and facilitators of Stanford GSB's highly-rated Touchy Feely interpersonal dynamics course, and brings intentionality, empathy, and scientific rigor to his craft. He has published several popular articles on Medium such as Redesigning Quora (>22,000 views) and Facebook's Homepage Experiments and Their Impact on Ad Conversions (> 8,000 views).

In his spare time, Norman enjoys jamming on piano, Tea with Strangers, memes, Salon talks, coffee, and spending time with nature.

Sydney Lai
Head of Strategy, Token Foundry, Consensys

Sydney is a community leader and strategist with an award-winning background in sales and business development. Sydney has been named an LGBT Technology Leader by The White House, Office of Science and Technology Policy and is a TEDx Speaker on creating innovation within communities. She has worked as the Head of Business at Audacy, a space satellite startup. After founding her own token launch firm, she now leads strategy on tokenized projects for Token Foundry at ConsenSys and a co-founder at Crypto NYC, a blockchain coworking space based in Manhattan.
