Are you ready for Startup Weekend Grand Forks?

A Startup Weekend  is a three day long event for developers, designers, marketers, product managers, students, and startup enthusiasts working together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch a startup within 54 hours.

Startup Weekend begins with open-mic 60-second pitches that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams then spend Saturday and Sunday focused on customer development, validating their ideas and building prototypes with the help of experienced mentors. On Sunday, teams demo their products and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.

Speakers


Phil Gisi
President/CEO - Edgewood Management Group

Phil was raised on a farm near New Rockford, ND and is a 1982 graduate of the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Major in Accounting.  Phil first served as the CFO for an oil field service and construction company, then spent 10 years working for St. Joseph's/UniMed Medical Center in Minot, ND, where he was the Vice President/CFO and later President/CEO.  In 1994, Phil invested in Edgewood Vista Senior Living, Inc., and today is the owner/CEO.  Phil is also the owner/CEO of Edgewood Management Group, LLC. and the Chairman of the Board of its related development company, Edgewood Development Group, LLC.  Phil is also the President/CEO of Edgewood Real Estate Investment Trust, a company specializing in the ownership of senior housing facilities under the REIT ownership structure.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Altru Health Systems of Grand Forks, the Board of Directors of the University of North Dakota Alumni Association Foundation and the Alumni Advisory Council of UND's School of Business and Public Administration.


Jay Schuler
President - GIANTS Snacks

Jay Schuler is a serial entrepreneur with a strong track record of success, a passion for the next generation of entrepreneurs,  and a commitment to students and entrepreneurial education. Jay and his partners sold SEEDS 2000 to a large international hybrid seed company, NuSeed, a wholly owned subsidiary of NuFarm, a publicly-traded company in Australia for $55 million. Jay still has ownership and board involvement in GIANT Sunflower seeds, Richland Organics, The Blue Corn Company, Ag America, and farming.  His sons Robert and Jason are alumni of the UND Entrepreneur Program and are leaders in GIANT Sunflower Seeds, significantly growing the venture since their UND days.

Bruce Gjovig
Director/CEO - UND Center for Innovation

Bruce has been North Dakota’s “go-to guy” for entrepreneurship, innovation, and capital investing since he launched the Center in 1984. As a visionary, Bruce strategically directs the Center and is continually innovating. He coaches entrepreneurs on strategies and capital formation. This “serial entrepreneur” has been in the trenches and has won more battles than lost!


Rachel Gornowicz
President/Owner - Countrywide Sanitation

Rachel joined her father’s business right out of high school in 1989, eventually designing, marketing, and implementing a division offering curbside recycling in Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, the Grand Forks Air Force Base, and eight smaller communities. When her father chose to retire, she acquired Vern’s Parking Lot Maintenance, his parking lot sweeping division. She started on her own with one sweeper and a couple of contracts with area shopping malls but after a major flood in 1997 her sweeping business took off. She later expanded into a variety of areas with the purchase of Border City Sweeping in Fargo in 2000. In 2008, she launched Countrywide Sanitation Co., which she has led for 7 years.




Tom Kenville
Chairman/CEO - Valley Angel Fund & Unmanned Applications Institute

Tommy has over 20 years of aviation and aerospace training and management experience.  Kenville served as Vice President of Business Development for the UND Aerospace Foundation, for 15 years, where he was actively involved in ab-initio pilot training, air traffic control training, and securing contracts for the AeroSpace Network (ASN). Kenville also served as the co-chair of the North Dakota Aerospace Cluster, which promotes the aviation-related companies in the region where he was appointed by the U.S. Department of Commerce to serve on the North Dakota District Export Council.  Kenville is a 1988 graduate of the University of North Dakota’s College of Business and Public Administration majoring in Marketing.



Cindy Schrieber
Owner - Tri State Aviation

Cindy owns Wahpeton North Dakota’s Tri- State Aviation, an aircraft maintenance, repair and restoration company. Tri-State offers a diverse range of machine shop services to the agriculture, aerospace, architecture and engineering industries and specializes in the restoration of P-51 mustang aircraft. She also owns CinderWhit & Company which makes stock and custom wood components for the restoration of porches and homes. Schreiber- Beck serves as executive director of the North Dakota Agricultural Association, is a commissioner on the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission, and serves as a North Dakota state representative for District 25 of Wahpeton.

Andrea Volk
Owner - Quotable Kids

Andrea Volk, MA, CCC-SLP earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL in Psychology, and a Master's of Arts from the University of Minnesota in Speech-Language Pathology. After graduate school, she had the opportunity to work for the Scottish RiteCare Language Clinic in Elk River, MN. She also has 4 years experience with the early intervention program in Grand Forks, the Anne Carlsen Infant Development program. Professionally, she has published a research article using speech-generated devices in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology (November 2010). She had the opportunity to participate in the Family-Centered Natural Environment Project for a year with Dr. Juliann Woods from Florida State University.
