The Biggest Event for Entrepreneurs in November

Student entrepreneurs, software developers, and industry professionals from LMU, USC, UCLA, Caltech, Illinois, UC Berkeley, Woodbury, and SMCC will converge at Loyola Marymount University on Nov. 21, 2014 to create the next BIG STARTUP. In addition to that: startups, investors, CEOs, and large companies will join the action to promote the rapidly-growing entrepreneurial community in Silicon Beach, Los Angeles. This will all take place during Startup Weekend Global Battle 2014- an international weekend for entrepreneurs to compete for large cash prizes and investments in their companies.

Lewis Jaffe
CEO

Ilya Pozin
Founder of Pluto.TV, Open Me, and Ciplex, Writer for Forbes and Inc.

Ilya Pozin is an entrepreneur, writer and investor. He is the founder of Pluto.TV, Open Me, and Ciplex. He is a columnist for Forbes, Inc., LinkedIn and TheNextWeb. 

In 2012, Inc. Magazine recognized Ilya as a '30 Under 30' Entrepreneur. In 2013, LinkedIn selected Ilya as one of 100 Top Influencers, along with the likes of Richard Branson, Barack Obama, Tony Robbins and Mark Cuban.

An early immigrant from Russia, Ilya founded his first company Ciplex when he was 17-years-old. Ciplex has been behind the build and marketing of thousands of websites and applications. Utilizing his experience in scaling businesses for clients, Ilya launched Open Me, a consumer-focused greeting card and gifting company, and Pluto.TV a digital video entertainment platform. 

Ilya resides in Los Angeles where he works, writes, invests, mentors and on occasion, attempts to golf. 


Justin Yoshimura

Justin is founder and CEO of 500friends, a provider of SaaS loyalty marketing solutions backed by $12M+ from leading investors such as Crosslink Capital, Intel Capital, Silicon Valley Bank and YCombinator. The company enables retailers to turn shoppers into loyal customers through a white-label social loyalty platform that includes rewarding customers for purchases but also for referring friends, writing reviews, sharing and recommending products and uploading content.Justin’s passion for entrepreneurship and business began at age 14, when he opened an eBay account and quickly became a top PowerSeller for the e-commerce giant. Since then, he has founded two profitable e-commerce companies, both of which were acquired. He is also an investor in more than 20 ventures including Zencoder, ifeelgoods, Hipmunk, Homejoy, OwnLocal, Torbit, Userfox, Firebase and First Opinion.A native of Los Angeles, Justin was recently named to Forbes' prestigious 30 Under 30 list for the Social & Mobile category. Other than entrepreneurship, he is passionate about animals, especially dogs, Persian/exotic cats, dolphins, whales, capybaras, platypus, manatees and sea turtles.


Bryson Ishii

Bryson Ishii graduated from LMU in 2010 with dual degrees in Entrepreneurship and Accounting. Upon graduating, he was immediately recruited to work as a management and operations executive for a mid-sized manufacturing firm based in downtown LA overseeing over 30 employees and acting as part of a senior management team. His implementations led the company to double revenues over a three year period and reduce expenses resulting in substantial profit increases, repositioned assets and a sustainable high growth direction. Bryson now consults for many businesses ranging from early stage venture to established sector leaders on operational strategy, finance strategy, business structure and capital needs. His work has led to capital raises, restructures and cost savings totaling millions of dollars. He also works closely with investment banking groups in helping small cap companies raise capital, enter the public stock exchanges and establish market presence among investors.


Ron Rishagen
Entrepreneur in Residence

Ronald Rishagen, earned an athletic scholarship for hockey to Colorado College. After graduating with a degree in economics he continued a professional ice-hockey officiating career for seven years. After retiring from sports, he discovered a travel niche not being fulfilled resulting in his first entrepreneurial pursuit. Economic market changes five years later caused Ronald to sell the company. He then started his second venture in the travel industry. After 13 years an offer to sell was too good to refuse, so he began his second retirement. Ron desired to enter the world of education and he has been teaching economics and business courses at St. Bernard High School for 12 years. In his last year of teaching, he implemented an entrepreneurship class. To provide additional expertise and resources, a partnership with LMU Entrepreneurship Program was established whereby six senior LMU entrepreneurship students guided the SBHS entrepreneurship class. Ron now lives in Playa Del Rey volunteering as a Docent on the USS Battleship Iowa berthed in San Pedro, Advising the Entrepreneurship Society at LMU and Instructing Financial Literacy at Homeboy Industries.


Andre Bueno
VP of Sales

While attending Loyola Marymount University, André managed his parents real estate portfolio prior to joining Goldman Sachs after graduation. He spent a year at Goldman before returning to Los Angeles to join a Latin American focused Real Estate Private Equity fund. Starting a business was always the long-term goal, though certain skills needed to be acquired, hence the decision to return to the sell side by joining Morgan Stanley as a Listed Derivatives salesperson. André is now based in Los Angeles and has since started a Real Estate Private Equity fund focused on the multifamily segment.


Phil Thomas
Electrical and Computer Engineer

Phil Thomas is currently employed with Rockwell Collins as a Software Engineer responsible for the software development of Inflight Entertainment Systems for private and commercial Business Jets. Rockwell Collins is a pioneer in the design, production, and support of innovative solutions in the aerospace and defense industry. Phil is a recent LMU graduate, Class of 2014, with a degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Computer Engineering.  Throughout his academic career at LMU he served as the LMU chapter president of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), a member of IEEE, and an active member of the Entrepreneurship Society.  Phil is enthusiastic with regards to giving back to the LMU organizations and communities which benefited him during his college education and looks forward to continuing to serve professionally as a conduit in achieving their various missions.  Phil is also extremely focused and passionate about startups and his goal is to be a major contributor of the future growth of the startup communities in his hometown of Southern California. Phil is the founder of an early stage technology startup and understands the roller coaster environment encountered by startups everyday. He is excited to share his experiences.


Wahaj Siraj
CEO & co-founder Naya Tel

Aaron is a senior at USC studying Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.  Wahaj us Siraj is CEO and co-founder of Naya Tel (Pvt) Ltd., which has installed Pakistan's first fiber to the home (FTTH) project in Islamabad in 2006-07 to provide voice, video and high speed Internet access to business and home users. Before Nayatel’s launch, Wahaj co-founded Micronet Broadband (Pvt) Ltd., the first one to launch broadband Digital Subscribers Line (DSL) services in Pakistan in 2002. Wahaj has vast experience in Internet and telecom industry and also worked with the Government of Pakistan at policy making level.
Wahaj is a founder member of ISPAK (Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan) and has been a strong activist for reforms in Pakistani IT and Telecom industry.
He started his first business in high school fixing computers, and has now honed his skills to improve human travel, sustainable energy, and the internet of things through several hackathons and entrepreneurial endeavors.
