54 hours to change the Healthcare Industry... Are you ready?

Startup Weekend, Cedars-Sinai and Techstars are teaming up to launch Startup Weekend Healthcare LA on November 13-15. We’re bringing together talented startup enthusiasts to spend an intense 54 hours creating breakthroughs that have the potential to improve the lives of patients around the world.

Previous healthcare technology or medical experience is not required! Just bring your ideas and enthusiasm for building software, devices, or services that could empower the patient or healthcare professional to better track, manage, or improve health and healthcare delivery.

Mentors from within the Cedars-Sinai will be on hand throughout the weekend to share clinical experience and design guidance.

Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Event Judges


Bruce Gewertz

Bruce L. Gewertz is Surgeon-in-Chief, Chair of the Department of Surgery, Vice-Dean for 
Academic Affairs and Vice-President for Interventional Services at Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles. He trained in general and vascular surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Gewertz is the author of more than 200 original articles, book chapters and books. His principal clinical and research interests include mesenteric ischemia, cerebrovascular disease and aortic aneurysmal disease.


Mandy Salzman
Director at Techstars for Disney Accelerator

Mandy Salzman works to power the Disney Accelerator as Director in a role that combines her passion for helping startups and her experience working in entertainment and venture capital. After graduating from USC’s Marshall School of Business, Mandy worked on marketing, publicity, and media partnership campaigns at Fox and Sony Pictures Entertainment. She has also worked at Plug and Play Ventures / Accelerator in the Bay Area and at NASDAQ working with later stage companies on the New Listings and Capital Markets team and launching the NASDAQ Private Market (NPM). Her additional investing and venture experience includes time with Structure Capital, VantagePoint Capital Partners, and Rothenberg Ventures.


Ash Kumra
Trade Kraft Co-Founder/CEO, Best Selling Author, Talk Show Host

Ash Kumra is an award winning entrepreneur, author, public speaker and talk show host recognized twice by the White House as an entrepreneur making an impact. Ash is currently co-founder of Trade Kraft; a digital content network featuring inspirational advice, interviews and life lessons to help the millennial generation master their passion.

Ash is an authority on entrepreneurship, social media & branding by authoring the book series "Confessions from an Entrepreneur", spoken to over 10,000 people and has been cited in 100's of articles including Forbes Magazine, Huffington Post, American Express Forum, Entrepreneur Magazine, Startup America/Up Global, LA Times, OC Register, Tedx & The White House. Ash has also hosted over 100 interview with business mavens, authors, entrepreneurs and celebrities who have achieved their dreams and goals.

Ash is currently helping run Youngry (a media company informing, inspiring and elevating young & hungry minded entrepreneurs to thrive).


Coaches and Mentors


Sam Katz
Digital Health Lead / Senior Strategist at Continuum

Samantha is the Digital Health Lead and based in Continuum’s LA studio.  Sam’s focus on design strategy all started while clothes shopping in Manhattan.  Unable to easily locate an item in her size and desired color,  she decided on the spot to channel her growing frustration with poorly designed products and services into something positive.  Since that fateful day, she has worked to develop her healthcare expertise and harness the power of design thinking to help people face healthcare challenges and live more fun and fulfilling lives.


Alex Ehrhart
Health System Manager, Department of Surgery, Interventional Services/Surgical Education/Surgical Analytics & Improvements

Alex Ehrhart is a senior continuous improvement practitioner and operations leader with more than 13 years of results-based experience in the healthcare and financial services industries. He brings cross-functional expertise in the development and implementation of business transformation programs with strong focus on relational interactions between people, process and technology. With a mindful blend of Lean, Six Sigma and change management techniques, the targeted program and project outcomes include improved productivity, increased efficiency, enhanced quality and safety, and strengthened financial results across the enterprise.


Joseph Castongia
Lead, Innovation and Design Thinking at Cedars Sinai

Joseph is the Manager of Care Innovation and Design at Cedars-Sinai, where he focuses on transforming the care experience through a better understanding of human emotion and behavior. Over his twelve years experience in healthcare, he has been most inspired by the deep, interpersonal connections made with patients and care providers through the Ethnographic process and then using those connections to uncover deep-seated insights into the human condition. 

Before joining Cedars-Sinai Joseph served in a variety of clinical and non-clinical roles. He is also been trained as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and has experience working on large, cross-functional projects involving clinical effectiveness, patient safety, and operational efficiency. 


Mayumi Kharabi
Project Manager, Design Thinking Consultancy at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Mayumi Kharabi is a Team Lead in the Design Thinking Consultancy at Cedars-Sinai.   She is involved in hospital-wide projects to help stakeholders apply human centered design methodologies to create meaningful change in the experience of patients and staff throughout the Medical Center.  She believes that people’s lives can be improved by understanding the emotions and motivations that drive their behavior, and by encouraging them to participate as end users in the development of innovative solutions.   Prior to her role in the Design Thinking team, Mayumi worked as a bedside nurse on Cedars-Sinai’s 6SE Advanced Heart Failure Unit.  Her love and compassion for people and her desire to improve human health inspired her to become a nurse. Before joining Cedars-Sinai, Mayumi was a Senior Consultant at Towers Watson, a global human capital consulting firm.  During her eight years in consulting, she helped healthcare systems and Fortune 500 clients design programs to improve the health of their employee populations, and also held a number of internal management roles.  She earned her Masters in Nursing from UCLA and bachelor's degree in Finance and Marketing from New York University.  She is a licensed Registered Nurse in California, and holds a Clinical Nurse Leader designation from the AACN. 


Sanjay Kumar
CEO at Deligence Technologies

Sanjay co-founded and currently is serving as the CEO of Deligence Technology. A veteran in the field of information technology, he has had major stints at Opensource Technologies, Infotech Ltd.


Wilton Risenhoover
Insurance and FinTech Entrepreneur

 is a technology entrepreneur with a strong focus on product strategy and technology. He has over 20+ years serving on executive management teams in the Internet and software industries, with a particular focus on SaaS, enterprise software, and financial technology.


Patrick Ryan
Medical device startup manager

Patrick is an entrepreneur and has held senior leadership positions in several medical device startups in Pasadena.  With a background in innovation, product development, and business development, he brings experience across a range of medical technologies spanning drug delivery, diagnostics, and implantable devices.  Patrick has raised multiple rounds of funding and closed a major licensing/acquisition deal with a large global healthcare company.  He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Massachusetts - Amherst and an MBA from Harvard Business School.


Jes Sofia Valle
Founder of Bloggers of Health

Dynamic Social Media Influencer, Motivational Speaker, Psychotherapist and community builder focused on helping others achieve their optimum Mental, Physical and Community Health.
