Learn how to take ideas from concept to creation in 48 hours!

Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with? 

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend long experience. Your ticket includes:

Victor Bakunoff
General Partner at SportVEST Venture Capital

Vic is currently a General Partner with SportVEST Venture Capital fund where he integrates his laser focused growth expertise that's resulted in nearly $500M in capital raised during the past 10 plus years, multiple IPOs, mergers, acquisitions, and exits with a diversified background as a senior level strategy, marketing and technology executive in working for and with Fortune 100 companies in industries such as wireless, e-sports, gaming, pharmaceutical, healthcare, financial, entertainment, and beauty.  Vic further blends the disciplines, work ethic, and teamwork acquired from performing at the highest levels on the athletic field in both football and baseball--collegiately and professionally in being passionate about working with and creating strong business leaders who consistently exceed business objectives.  Vic also spearheads the Entrepreneurial Program at Princeton University while holding an MBA in Marketing from The Wharton School, an MS in Management at the University of Pennsylvania, and a BS in Marketing from Bowling Green State University.

Chuck Thomas
Retired: Founder, President, CEO, Principal and Professor

Chuck is a serial entrepreneur, having created and built technology ventures delivering computer services, enterprise management software, planning software, contract software development project services, IP telephony, and digital cable technology. He also was the chief executive for several intrapreneurial ventures, including an R&D JV of Comcast and QVC, a computer resources company for Cigna (then was INA), and was Principal responsible for IBM Global Services eBusiness for the Retail and Distribution sectors, Eastern US.   Chuck is a certified Mentor for the National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps) initiative. He was Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship in a Penn State University MBA program for eleven years, and currently serves on the Advisory Board and is Chairman of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Committee. He has judged several entrepreneur pitch events, and helped in the creation of the Penn State Great Valley REV-UP Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He has also been a mentor to the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship at The University of Maryland.  Chuck has been an angel investor and has advised dozens of startups. He is a graduate of The University of Maryland School of Business and Public Administration (now the R. H. Smith School of Business) and has an MBA from University of Maryland University College.


Maria O'Connell
Founder and Business Owner

Maria O’Connell joined Express Employment Professionals in July of 2015 as the owner of the Chester County (Main Line), PA office. She and her team partner with a variety of businesses of all sizes, across many industries, providing a full range of staffing services to help ensure client’s maximum flexibility and cost savings. 
Prior to joining Express, Maria spent over 25 years in Healthcare IT and is an experienced leader in quality management, learning /workforce development and program management. She has held positions leading international teams in the US, India and Germany. Maria supports area businesses with many years of first-hand experience facing the same challenges and opportunities that they face on a daily basis.  Maria received a BSBA from Kutztown University, completed a M.Ed. at Penn State and an MBA at NYIT.


Kecia Sturdivant
Business Consultant

Kecia Sturdivant, brings more than 25 years of consulting, marketing, sales and business development experience, both nationally and internationally, including worldwide market development roles with a fortune 500 company to her role as Business Consultant at the Kutztown University SBDC. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from Muhlenberg College. Master’s Degree in Education from DeSales University, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Kutztown University.   Kecia assists entrepreneurs and small business owners primarily in Kutztown, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Coatesville and Exton offices with all aspects of starting, growing and expanding their businesses, including: business, product, marketing & sales planning; financial forecasting and loan presentation development.  


Michael Dermer
Founder/Author of The Lonely Entrepreneur

Michael Dermer is an entrepreneur, speaker, lawyer and founder/author of The Lonely Entrepreneur. Michael is considered the founder of not only a company, but an industry – rewarding individuals for healthy behavior. Michael left a promising law career to start IncentOne, the first company to provide rewards for healthy behavior.  At the time, rewards in healthcare were not only non-existent – they were offensive.  He was told over and over “we will never reward people for things they should be doing to be healthy.” After bootstrapping for a decade, his company received a large private equity investment on October 15, 2008. They had arrived. It should have been a time for celebration. Then the financial crisis hit. Ten years were gone in ten days. Bankrupt customers. Investment gone. Credit dead. Family dollars at risk. Angry investors. Family relationships on the brink. It would take two years of working 24 hours a day to save what took ten years to build.  The perfect storm. It was doomed. Or was it? Today, health rewards are everywhere, he sold IncentOne to industry innovator Welltok and his company is credited with creating the health rewards industry. What resulted was not only a business success, but the discovery of a unique method on how to thrive under the pressure, chaos and burden of being the entrepreneur. The Lonely Entrepreneur was born.


Chad Stender
Managing Director, SeventySix Capital

Chad is known as an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and connector. He oversees business operations, investments, finance and administration at SeventySix Capital. Chad also runs our internship program, which currently has over 100 alumni to-date. He works with the partners of SeventySix Capital to support them with investor relations, fundraising and company investments.    Chad was awarded the 2018 Philadelphia Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 and the 2018 Southern New Jersey Business People’s 40 Under 40.   Prior to SeventySix Capital, Chad worked for the Philadelphia Flyers, Comcast-Spectacor, led a sports accessory startup and interned for the Philadelphia 76ers and The Walt Disney Corporation. He currently sits on the boards of Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, Challah for Hunger, Tribe 12 and is an advisor to New Leaders Council Fellows. Chad is a graduate of James Madison University and received his master's degree from East Stroudsburg University.

John Tooher
Owner

John Tooher is a Managing Partner at HeadRoom LLC a Business Accelerator and Consultancy Practice in suburban Philadelphia. His main focus is on helping businesses scale by identifying and systematically fixing the key issues holding them back. Prior to co-founding HeadRoom john was President and General Manager of Yell Adworks Inc. He led a 3,000-person global operation engaged in the production of print and on-line advertising solutions. He began his career in 1986 as a process engineer with General Electric. From 1988 to 1997, John worked for 3M where he held various senior technical and manufacturing management roles at a European level. From 1997 to 2002, he worked for a 3M spin-off, Imation Corp. and was responsible for European technical, manufacturing and service operations for a number of divisions. John holds a B.Sc. in Science from the National University of Ireland and a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College in Dublin. John and his wife Kirsten have two adult children and enjoy living in the beautiful countryside of West Chester, Pennsylvania.


Carl Woodin
Founder/Owner

Carl founded AZtech Multimedia & Training Group in 2002. The company has supported the multimedia and audio-visual aspects for corporate meetings on 6 continents, designs and develops websites and works on various video productions. The client list includes musicians, the BBC, Fortune 500 companies, biotechs, medical offices, artists and others. Carl has worked on Billy Joel’s documentaries “The Last Play at Shea” and “A Matter of Trust: The Bridge to Russia” and the CD “The Stranger: 30th Anniversary Legacy Edition Set.” Prior to AZtech, Carl worked at Shared Medical Systems, Merck & Co. and IMS Health in the roles of Systems Analyst, Programmer Analyst, Trainer/Instructional Designer, Training Manager and International Creative Director.    Carl is a former adjunct faculty member at Penn State Great Valley and Temple University. Carl has a BA in Psychology from Temple University, an MEd from Penn State Great Valley in Training Design and Development and a PhD in Multimedia Design and Development from The University of London. He has traveled to over 80 countries and all 7 continents. 


Saif Khalil
CEO and President of Aevumed, Inc.

Saif has over 14 years of R&D and commercialization experience in medical devices and biologics in the areas of orthopedics, cardiovascular, and programmable active implants. His experience encompasses developing and optimizing research, product design, product launch, and lifecycle management for Class II and III medical devices. He is currently the CEO and President of Aevumed, Inc., a medical device company focusing on advancing the treatment of patients with rotator cuff tears. Prior to Aevumed, Saif was the Vice President of Neuromodulation and Research at Globus Medical where he established and led the Neuromodulation business unit as well as manage and publish the biomechanics and clinical research for the company. Prior to joining Globus, he was as a management consultant for PA Consulting Group where he led a wide range of product development projects for several Pharma and Biotech companies; including but not limited to Cordis Corporation, J&J Consumer Products, and Pfizer. Saif has a MS in Materials Science and Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University.


Derek Rodner
Product Strategy at Agilence

Derek Rodner has overall responsibility for the company & product strategy at Agilence, a VC-backed SaaS provider of exception analytics for retail and restaurants. Before joining Agilence, Derek was Vice President of Marketing at PERFMAN, a cross-platform systems management software provider.  In just nine months, Derek repositioned the company from a legacy provider of mainframe technologies to a leader in the virtualization space and was instrumental in securing acquisition offers from several Fortune 500 companies.  Prior to joining PERFMAN, Derek was responsible for worldwide marketing for EnterpriseDB Corporation, spearheading the growth of the company to over 300 customers. Before EnterpriseDB, Derek held a number of marketing roles at Unisys Corporation. He led the open source initiative at Unisys and was responsible for the marketing of their Intel server line. In addition, Derek was the first non-employee Chairman of the Marketing Board for the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL). Derek was also the founder and president of a business re-engineering firm for Fortune 500 companies. Derek is a graduate of Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.  he is married with three children and lives in Chester Springs, PA.


Walter Wang
Professor of Marketing Management

Dr. G. Walter Wang is Professor of Marketing at Penn State University’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies. He has published numerous research articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and has advised a number of startups in biotech, renewable energy, and food distribution sectors. He is an expert in customer research, consumer marketing, and business-to-business sales.


Steve Meyers
Executive Vice President of Digital at Beasley Media Group

Steve Meyers is currently Executive Vice President of Digital at Beasley Media Group.  With 20 years of digital and software engineering leadership in companies scaling from startups to the enterprise, Steve’s core skill set has always been about utilizing technology to drive business transformation and growth. Over the last six years, Steve has been responsible for driving the digital transformation of traditional media companies from both product and revenue points of view.  He also currently advises and serves on the board of directors of SpokenLayer, a voice-media startup based out of New York City.  Steve is a graduate of Penn State University and lives in Limerick, Pennsylvania.


Maura Jarve
Entrepreneur and Chief Creative Officer, Raconteur Media Co.

In her career spanning the political, pharmaceutical, financial, and technology sectors, Maura has created brand strategies, web sites, application interfaces, corporate identities, and marketing collateral for companies large and small since 1998. Her philosophy of business-strategy driven design informs every decision for the web, mobile, and application design.  Previously Maura led creative teams at Digitas Health, Unisys, and USABancshares before starting her own firm, True Creative Partners. Mrs. Jarve’s clients have included Goldline, HighschoolSports.net (a Gannett company), Refresh (now part of Linked-in), USABancshares, Unisys, Astra Zeneca, Jedediah Bila (Fox New Contributor), and many high-profile political candidates, small businesses, and start-ups. True Creative was acquired by Raconteur Media Co, an Austin-based digital marketing firm in 2018, where Maura is now Chief Creative Officer. She enjoys the challenge of translating a client’s goals into effective design, and working with diverse teams to realize each client’s goals.  Mrs. Jarve holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art.


Mark Stevens
Managing Partner, Enable Health

Mark Stevens is Managing Partner of EnableHealth, a professional services firm, which he co-founded in 2017.  Since 2010, Mr. Stevens has also lead the health IT consulting firm he co-founded, ARRAHealth.  During that time, Mark Stevens also served as a Vice President at Best Practice Partners (BPP), a leader in healthcare training, process re-design and IT optimization solutions serving providers, payers, HIEs and ACOs.  Prior to joining BPP, Mr. Stevens was Vice President of Digital Collaboration Solutions, a health IT professional services firm; Senior Director for eHealth Innovation at World Congress, a leader in healthcare conference management; and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania eHealth Initiative (PAeHI), a not-for-profit organization founded in 2005 by Pennsylvania’s leading healthcare stakeholders to promote broader adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchange (HIE).


Chris Field
Growth Strategy Entrepreneur

Chris Field has spent the last 18 years in sales and growth marketing roles for various startups, software companies and agencies. He helps them acquire their first clients, scale their growth and build out teams for long term success. He now runs Fieldtrip Inc, a consulting agency focusing on building predictable systems for growing early stage companies using marketing funnels, marketing automation tools, lead nurturing sequences and paid media campaigns on Facebook, Google, Instagram and Youtube,.  Throughout his career, Chris was responsible for the marketing and growth strategies for two startups that spent years on the INC 500 & INC 50 lists of fastest growing companies. He also was a part of an image recognition startup that failed miserably, which taught him valuable lessons that he shares so others learn from his mistakes. By leveraging the latest technology and strategies, Chris helped generate a positive ROI for hundreds of startups and SaaS companies as well as national brands like ESPN, US Army, Discovery Channel, AAA and Disney.


Chris Avenick
Entrepreneur

Chris Avenick is an accomplished startup and growth-stage technology executive with 20 years of software engineering experience.  Most recently he helped Frontline Education, a SAAS based company providing HCM software to k-12 school districts, obtain their 1.3 billion dollar sale by designing an event-based platform architecture that transformed their disparate product offerings into a module based HCM solution.  At Frontline he oversaw and orchestrated company-wide initiatives involving 120 engineers to make Frontline a platform company. Before joining Frontline, Chris served as CTO to a social gaming start-up and founded his own software development firm. He is a graduate of Drexel University and an active member in the Philadelphia Startup Leaders network.  Chris currently resides in Glenmoore, PA with his wife and three children.


Brandon Steiger
President and Big Idea Guy, 2120 Creative

Steiger founded 2120 Creative, an integrated marketing firm, in 2005 to help organizations develop innovative and creative strategies for the web. With more than 22 years of experience, Brandon’s technological background allows 2120 to partner with marketing and IT departments alike, delivering the right digital solution for each client.    As a full-service digital marketing agency, 2120 Creative cultivates relationships and builds transformative strategies by integrating various mediums such as website development, app design, branding, content marketing, SEO, social media, graphic design, PPC/SEM, predictive analytics, native and mobile advertising.
