Come at the 2018 “Impactful Ventures” Startup Weekend to pitch your idea, meet a co-founder, learn new skills and ... create a company! Startup Weekend is a weekend-long event that gathers developers, designers, business developers and people from all backgrounds to meet and create their startup.

Why an “Impactful Ventures” Startup Weekend?

As entrepreneurs, we have the ability to make the world better, to make people’s lives better, far beyond any bottom line. Our goal for this edition of Startup Weekend NYC is to break the mould of creating addictive or purely profit-driven businesses, and instead focus on using connectivity to improve individuals’ lives, communities and society as a whole, in a smart and sustainable way.

Do I need an idea to participate? Whether you have a business idea or not, you can attend the event. Those who do not come with a specific idea will join the selected projects.

Who should attend? It doesn't matter what you do or where you come from, Startup Weekend is designed as an inclusive event and program that brings all sorts of people together including developers and other tech-related professionals, designers of all types, non-technical talents (i.e. business, sales, finance, legal, etc.), students, professionals looking to switch careers, passionate visionaries, and learners from all around NYC and the surrounding area!

Terms of Participation Agreement:

It is our job to provide you with an incredible networking and learning opportunity. Our intention is that you meet some amazing people that you might actually start a company with, build relationships with coaches, and learn from your peers. The event is intended to be a collaborative forum for sharing, learning, building, and having fun. As such, by registering as a participant, you acknowledge that any ideas shared by you or anyone else over the course of the event are contributions to the overall experience and community. If you as a participant are worried about someone stealing your ideas, please reconsider your participation in the event itself or simply refrain from sharing specifics about your idea.

As a member of your startup community, you agree to to be inclusive of any and all people and their ideas. You agree to act professionally, treat everyone with respect, and treat the event facilities with proper care. You agree that you are responsible for any accidents or damages that you cause. You also agree to not hold Startup Weekend, your local volunteer team, or any of the event supporters liable for any loss, damage, injury, or any other unforeseeable incident.

After several entrepreneurial ventures and companies Bart co-founded Innovation Booster during his studies in Engineering. His mission was to double the life expectancy of the Fortune 500. In the last 50 years the life expectancy of Fortune 500 companies dropped from 65 years to 15 years. By bringing in talented people to unleash the earning potential of innovation in a structured way, Innovation Booster manages to create future proof corporates. Now the founders are expanding the company into the US after steadily scaling the company for the last 3 years. Jessica is an award-winning entrepreneur who co-founded New York On Tech (NYOT). NYOT is a nonprofit organization bringing technology education and professional opportunities to students. She has been listed in Forbes 30 Under 30, NYN 40 Under 40 and her work has been featured in CNN, TechCrunch and other major media outlets.

Eric Kirsten
Screeenwriter/tech entrepreneur

Eric Kirsten is a Los Angeles-based feature film screenwriter who has also been the co-founder of four different, venture-backed startups including, most recently, Fanzter, Inc., which was acquired by The Walt Disney Corporation in 2014. In addition to writing, Eric currently serves as an Advisor to Codesmith, an advanced software engineering school and online coding platform. Prior to Fanzter, when he wasn’t involved with one of his startup ventures, he also served as the Head of College Basketball Programming at ESPN/ABC Sports and as a Creative Executive at Universal Pictures. Eric is a graduate of Duke University and Georgetown Law School, and his latest film project, Midnight Sun, is currently in theaters worldwide.

Taffi Ayodele
Founder of Thando’s

Mrs. Taffi Ayodele co-founded Thando’s, a Lagos- and New York-based footwear design and distribution company that provides a platform for African artists to co-design shoes for women that are comfortable, convenient, stylish and affordable. Thando’s seeks to have a positive impact on the image of the African continent across the globe. Thando’s tied for 1st place in the Beta Group at the Diaspora Demo Day pitch competition at the WorldBank in 2015. Mrs. Ayodele was the 3rd place winner for the inaugural She Leads Africa Startup Competition in Lagos and was listed in Forbes as one of the 10 Emerging Women Entrepreneurs to Watch in Africa. 

Mrs. Ayodele holds an MBA specializing in Global Business and Entrepreneurship and a BA in Economics from New York University (NYU). She also serves on the Board of Trustees of NYU and New Jersey SEEDS. Prior to Thando’s, she served as Director of the Office of Executive Initiatives at the New York State Dormitory Authority (DASNY), one of the nation’s largest issuers of low-cost, tax-exempt bonds and one of its biggest public builders. At DASNY, Mrs. Ayodele developed Authority-wide diversity programs and initiatives to broaden procurement opportunities and increase utilization of women and minority-owned businesses.

Kara Gomez has managed the Techstars Cloud and Techstars Music programs in San Antonio and Los Angeles, and has a background in small business accounting & finance, operations, and customer development. She now lives in New York City and is focused on alumni and network programs for Techstars. If you love cats or The Clash, do let her know.

Angela Medina
Founder of Latinas in Tech NYC - Product Designer at Updater

Angela is one of the founders of Latinas in Tech NYC. She works as a product designer at Updater, previously at TechCrunch in SF. Angela cares deeply about inclusion and mentoring in tech.

AJ Huaranca
Quality Engineer | WorkMarket, an ADP company

AJ has been working with technology teams and organizations for over six years, with a background spanning product, engineering, user acquisition, and professional services. Passionate about equality and advocating for the more underserved minorities in tech, he is currently both an engineer and the Community Tech lead for diversity & inclusion at WorkMarket an ADP company, a leading cloud-based workforce management solution. Backed by leading venture firms such as Union Square Ventures, Spark Capital and Foundry Group, as well as Accenture Ventures

Catalina Laverde
Backend Software Engineer at Spotify

Catalina is an engineer, entrepreneur, and female activist living in New York City. As a Backend and Data engineer at Spotify, Catalina has helped build, and scale the ad platform infrastructure and marketing systems that power user conversion. She was also one of the pioneers of Spotify's Employee Resource Groups, and currently co-leads their Latinxs ERG with over 100 members worldwide. Catalina is also the co-founder of Civic Action Network (CAN). A civic engagement company looking to bridge the gap between Congress and constituents.

Ben Siegel
Global Project and Partnership Lead at ConsenSys Social Impact

Ben Siegel is the Global Project and Partnership Lead at ConsenSys Social Impact. Focusing on areas such as human rights and financial inclusion, he is leading ConsenSys' efforts in equipping social impact organizations with blockchain solutions.

After spending time working in the political sphere, including an internship with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and a stint at the European Parliament, Ben spent his senior year of college taking an in-depth look at the way we currently handle humanitarian aid. As a result, he became extremely interested in experimental technologies, specifically, the growing role they have to play for the impact sector. Post-graduation, Ben became increasingly enthralled with blockchain’s potential as a tool for social change. This led him straight into ConsenSys, where he co-founded the Social Impact team as well as the broader Blockchain for Social Impact Coalition (BSIC). He is dedicated to bringing blockchain technology more directly into social impact work, and bridging the gap between technologists and humanitarians. 

Outside of ConsenSys, Ben is an advisor to NeedsList, a social startup that allows donors to directly buy necessary supplies for refugees across the globe. He is also a mentor for the Katapult Accelerator program, based in Oslo, Norway

Founder of Ondyr Marketing, a technical marketing agency focused on SEO, Web Analytics, and CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization). Stephen is also the current President of Online Geniuses, a digital marketing community of 12,000+ on Slack, and runs the MarTech Wiz blog and MarTech NYC meetup.

Elizabeth Vilchis

Elizabeth is a Latina from Mexico who brings over ten years of experience in successful initiatives focused on entrepreneurship, engineering, and technology. 

Her achievements include leading NYC-wide robotics competitions, co-leading Samsung’s national STEM program, and taking a technology startup from an idea to a venture-backed company with over $2 million in funding.

She currently serves as C.E.O. of latinoTech, an organization that promotes the development of Latinx entrepreneurs and innovators by facilitating access to experts, talent, and venture capital. 

Jose Casanova
Product Engineer at Flip

Jose is a product engineer at Flip ( where he spends most of his time working on growth products. His previous experiences including writing a book about Growth Marketing, software engineer at SeamlessGov and part of the launch team for Looppay (Acquired by Samsung as the basis for SamsungPay), which he helped the company raise over $110k on Kickstarter.

Ale Paredes

Ale is a passionate Software Engineer with over 7 years of experience focused on creating resilient and scalable systems. She is one of the founders of Latinas in Tech NYC. Currently, Ale works at Code Climate (, where she uses her time thinking about system architecture, communication and organization skills, and how to build a healthy and inclusive team.  

Paul Munguia
Revenue & Business Modeling

Paul has 10+ years of experience analyzing and advising the operations and growth of businesses through the lenses of commercial lending and early-stage startup consulting. He is the founder of Currencie, a Financial Technology platform for first-time borrowers. He also organized the content and user acquisition strategies for the launch of a payment fraud app in the FinTech space.At Upright NYC, Paul works with the product team to ensure all features are viable from a cost perspective while optimizing available revenue streams. He studied finance at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas and enjoys writing in his free tim
