Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event that brings together local designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all domains to do amazing things. This November, Phoenix will join over 200 cities from around the world to compete in the Global Startup Battle.

An initiative created by Startup Weekend, Global Startup Battle aims to generate a stronger global community of entrepreneurs through the largest startup competition in the world. During the weekend prior to and following Global Entrepreneurship Week, hundreds of Startup Weekend and other UP Global programs are hosted around the world and winning teams from each event move forward to compete with one another via a global video competition. Global Startup Battle enriches the global entrepreneurial community by creating a sense of inclusion between startup teams around the world.


Friday November 14th

Review agenda for the weekend and introduce coaches, judges and organizers.

Optionally line up to give your pitch

Form Teams
Teams start forming and discussing ideas

Begin Work
Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Bob La Loggia

Bob is a veteran of four startups, including his most recent company, Appointment-Plus. He has grown Appointment-Plus from a small startup to now having over 75 employees. It was recently named a CareerBuilder Top 50 Places to Work and was recognized as the #9 software company in Arizona in the Phoenix Business Journal Book of Lists.

Hamid Shojaee

Hamid is founder of Axosoft, a software company in Scottsdale Arizona that provides software development tools to thousands of companies worldwide. Hamid has been an active member of Arizona’s entrepreneur community, helping create AZ Disruptors, a software incubator, and AZ Tech Beat, Arizona’s tech news source. He is also an angel investor in several software startups and one of the recipients of Phoenix Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs in Arizona.

Heidi Jannenga
President and Co-Founder

Dr. Heidi Jannenga PT, DPT, ATC/L, is the co-founder and president of WebPT, the country’s leading rehab therapy EMR platform for enhancing patient care and fueling business growth. Since the company’s launch in 2008, Heidi has guided WebPT through exponential growth. Today, it’s the fastest-growing EMR in the country, employing more than 300 people and serving more than 70,000 therapy professionals at more than 10,000 clinics. WebPT has also ranked five consecutive times on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list and twice on the Inc. 500.

Frank Begalke

Frank has been a founder, investor, or held leadership positions in over a dozen startup companies across a wide range of industries including software, industrial distribution, manufacturing, consumer products, telecom and the entertainment industry.  As the Chief Operating Officer for Phoenix-based company B2Gnow since 2006, he has grown the company to be the national market leader with over 70% market share.  B2Gnow has been honored on Inc. Magazine’s Top 5000 Fastest Growing Companies list for 2013 and 2014.  Frank’s advocacy for local small businesses includes mentoring and early stage investments.  

Jenny Poon

Jenny Poon is a serial entrepreneur and founder of downtown Phoenix’s coworking space, CO+HOOTS that currently houses 50+ entrepreneurs. Her second business is eeko studio, a boutique design agency focused on fresh designs for impactful companies large and small. Her background in design and marketing led her to build a place where she could connect with like-minded folks that believe business growth comes from collaboration between different industries. She has worked over 10 years in team environments and has used her experience to organize a community that breeds inspiration and collaboration for entrepreneurs everywhere. Jenny earned’s top 35 Arizona entrepreneurs under 35 honors in 2009 and 2012; and Business Journal 40 under 40 honors in 2013.

Coaches and Mentors

Josh Manley

CEO of m-commerce company ReplyBuy, Inc. based in Scottsdale, AZ. The Arizona Republic named Josh as one of the top 35 entrepreneurs under 35 in the state. He was also recently named one of the 40 under 40 class of 2014 by the Phoenix Business Journal. His leadership spans years of successful technology startups, business development, marketing, growth and operational experience. Most recently Josh founded and created ReplyBuy, Inc. ReplyBuy was a previous winner of Arizona Innovation Challenge and was awarded a grant of $250,000 by the Arizona Commerce Authority. Prior to starting his present company Josh helped create Cartfly a social e-commerce shopping cart solution. He grew the platform to over 12,000+ e-commerce customers worldwide in under three years.

Josh Coffman

Architecturally sound software developer with nearly 20 years of experience working in and on over a dozen different startups. Fluency in Android, ASP.Net MVC, jQuery, AngularJS, Javascript, SQL, Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Postgres, Heroku, Github, and NodeJS.

Brent Sebold

Brent is the Director of Acceleration Curriculum within Arizona State University’s Office of the Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Dr. Sebold is responsible for the conceptualization, development, and dissemination of venture acceleration curricula that are delivered to startup management teams who are supported within ASU’s various co-working and acceleration initiatives.

Keith Weiner

Keith Weiner is CEO of Monetary Metals, a precious metals fund company in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a leading authority in the areas of gold, money, and credit and has made important contributions to the development of trading techniques founded upon the analysis of bid-ask spreads. He is founder of DiamondWare, a software company sold to Nortel in 2008, and he currently serves as president of the Gold Standard Institute USA. Weiner attended university at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and earned his PhD at the New Austrian School of Economics.* He blogs about gold and the dollar, and his articles appear on Zero Hedge, Kitco, and other leading sites. As a leading authority and advocate for rational monetary policy, he has appeared on financial television, The Peter Schiff Show and as a speaker at FreedomFest. He lives with his wife near Phoenix, Arizona.

Ben Reichert

Ben is an internationally published entrepreneur and educator with experience in video games, transportation and conflict management. His current project is bringing a voice to the Arizona video game community as Founder and CEO of Game CoLab, a video game incubator and industry advocate. He also has the unique opportunity to work with exceptional students on game design and business as a Professor at the University of Advancing Technology. 

Ben previously worked on advocacy and fundraising for the international peacebuilding efforts of Nonviolent Peaceforce, developing and managing the European communications strategy for the International Road Transport Union and served as the first Assistant Director for the Arizona State University Center for Games and Impact. He holds a Master's degree in International Relations from the University of Kent, Brussels School of International Studies.

Aaron Bare
Founder/Digital Strategist

Aaron Bare is a former Accenture Consultant turned Entrepreneur who has sold 10 companies, and built numerous others as a business strategist and advisor. He is former Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Thunderbird School of Global Management, the #1 International Business School in the World, former Chairman of the Board and CEO of the National Association of Sales Professionals, the World’s Largest Sales Association and Founder of Buzz Mouth, an international digital and business strategy firm, acquired by LaneTerralever in 2014. His clients include Coca-Cola, Dell, Comedy Central and Telemundo. Aaron also worked closely with storied brands including Facebook, Nike, Disney, Google and Microsoft in his past. Aaron is associated with Google Ideas, a Think/Do Tank and works globally with several organizations seeking to disrupt Violent Extremism and Illicit Networks’ movements.
