Startup Weekend: Where Ideas Become A Reality

Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with?

Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend.

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend long experience. Your ticket includes:

Teams start forming and discussing ideas

Begin Work
Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Tony Giovaniello
President of the Economic Development Corporation of Shasta County

Tony is the President of the Economic Development Corporation of Shasta County (Shasta EDC). In his 40+ year career, he has founded startups as well as held senior positions in multinational corporations. He has managed $150M P&Ls and generated annual business development in excess of $1 Billion. Predominantly, his experience is in sales and general management, marketing, product planning and management. His industry experience spans both technology and supply chain services. He has held positions on both private and public company boards. Tony holds an MBA from Columbia University.


Angela Cordell
Deputy Sector Navigator – Business & Entrepreneurship

With 11 years of small business, non-profit and economic development experience, Ms. Cordell’s focus is equipping the workforce and entrepreneurs in rural California to realize and define their global vision and goals. Ms. Cordell holds a BA in Public Relations and a minor in Women’s Studies from CSU, Chico and is currently a candidate for an MBA in International Business from Northcentral University. She began her career in Sacramento in 2005 and has since worked with clients throughout the state, helping them develop and strategize new programs, products and services. In 2016, she became the Far North Deputy Sector Navigator of Global Trade and Logistics and the Director of The Far North Center for International Trade Development, based at Feather River College. In January of 2018, Ms. Cordell joined Shasta College as the Deputy Sector Navigator of Business & Entrepreneurship and offers a variety of education tools, business development projects and global entrepreneurship efforts that foster economic sustainability and growth.

Eric A. Hiatt a Redding native is currently Founder and Chairman of the Board at Reverse Focus Inc. a technology company that sells SAAS to the mortgage industry a Partner at Synergy One Lending DBA Retirement funding Solutions, Executive Director, Investor and board member at Shasta Angels Group. He also holds multiple board seats and has placed capital in multiple start-ups through his private equity fund Level Up Capital LLC. Previous he was a Partner and SVP at Security One Lending Inc. at one time America’s largest Reverse Mortgage Bank (Sold to WIMC in Dec 2012).


Kim Brown
Director, Sales Development and Operations

Director, Sales Development & Operations - Experienced Sales Development leader with a demonstrated history of working in the computer software industry. Skilled in Sales, Go-to-market Strategy, Sales and Marketing Management, Team Building, Cold Call Training, Client Prospecting, and Building Strong Sales Teams. Carl Petersen
CEO/Founder

There is nothing more fulfilling to Carl than leading a team of diverse individuals to accomplish great things together, especially against the odds. For 7.5 years, as Rise Interactive grew from 15 to over 240 employees, Carl lead Accounting, Finance, Client Operations, Business Intelligence, and Business Process Improvement. With his smile, incisive wit, and calming demeanor, Carl helped bring order to the fast-growth chaos.

Prior to Rise, Carl co-founded an investment strategy firm that ended before it could begin in the midst of the 2007/8 financial crisis. After that, he consulted small businesses and startups on financial forecasting and operational improvements until he was hired at Rise. Carl started his career in the investment consulting arena, working with an entrepreneurial team at Morgan Stanley and then Raymond James. Vanderbilt University graduated Carl magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree double-major in Economics and Engineering Science.

Carl is pursuing a meaningful life with his lovely wife, Kelin, who is an amazing homeschooling mom to their three young children. They moved from Chicago to Redding, CA to enjoy the great outdoors and help nurture the city into a world-class place to live.

Kirk Wayman
Executive Coach

Kirk Wayman is the founder of IKON Coaching which uses a powerful coaching framework to launch people's success. He has spent thousands of hours working with entrepreneurs helping them overcome obstacles and successfully improve business cultures. After 15 years in business and non-profit management, Kirk made the decision to attend graduate school so he could focus on the development of the IKON Coaching framework. During these years he created a highly relational leadership approach designed for the next generation of executives determined to create value in their world.

Kirk holds a business management degree and completed his graduate work in Leadership. He and his wife, Maria, live with their two teenage sons in Redding, California where they enjoy the amazing community of thoughtful and enterprising people who make up the ecosystem of the North State.

CEO

Josh David Miller is the CEO of Mindbox Studios, a custom software development shop and innovation lab, where he works with a diverse group of creatives, strategists, investors, and engineers to help startup founders turn their ideas into winning products and get them to market.

Leveraging a background in large-scale marketing analytics initiatives and an intense passion for science and education, JDM has helped dozens of startup achieve product-market fit by focusing on hypothesis testing, measurement, and rapid iteration. He believes creating memorable, delightful user experience is paramount. He also believes creating great products means embracing failure. If one has never had a bad idea, how would she know if it was a good one?

Oh, and JDM only uses his powers for good.
