Considered to be the world’s starting point for entrepreneurship, Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable. This specific event will be the first youth-focused Startup Weekend in Rochester, Minnesota, welcoming primarily high school students as well as interested middle school students.

Speakers


Tori Utley

Tori Utley is an entrepreneur working jointly in technology innovation and addiction recovery, holding an addictions counseling license in Minnesota. She completed her BS in Psychology at age 19 and her M.B.A. at age 21. Now 22, she works as a mobile Product Manager at Mayo Clinic and is working with the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology on a new mobile application, “MoodCheck” for mood-monitoring and digital health.  Outside of Mayo Clinic, she is the Founder and CEO of an early-stage tech and social venture startup company, Tinua, with the goal of reducing monetary waste by reallocating for social impact. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of More Than An Addict, an organization committed to the reduction of addiction stigma through promoting education, employment, and entrepreneurship for individuals in long-term recovery, as well as the Co-Founder and Executive Director of an upcoming innovation to addiction treatment and sober housing, with the goal of keeping recovering individuals “safe, sober, now.” In addition to her work with addiction recovery, she is a Contributing Writer with Forbes and serves as the Director of Strategic Engagement at Mission 21, an anti-trafficking organization in Minnesota. 


John Devlin
CEO

Areas of Expertise: Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, Legal, Corporation    Structures, Accounting and Exit Strategies.  His knowledge and executive experience spans the medical, high tech, retail and internet industries. As an operational and financial executive for several different companies he has extensive hands on experience. As an entrepreneur he has started, bought and sold several companies over the past 25 years. From 1991 – Current, John serves as a senior executive for several companies including, CEO of Medical Innovations International Inc, A medical product development and manufacturing company. John also is a major shareholder, board of director and co-founder of BioMed, a company with lifesaving blood testing equipment, a local internet holding company, and local property holding company. From 2010 – 2014, John was hired in 2010, as part time CFO for Canopy Co. John eventually became full time CFO the interim Chief Operating Officer for the Company, sat on the Canopy Board of Directors, and led a 6+ million dollar private capital raise. John graduated from St. John’s University with a B.S. degree in Management and a B.S. in Communications and Media. John has been honored numerous times over the years for his business and community services. His most treasured honors include being named Board Member of the Year for the Workforce Development organization in S.E. Minnesota, an organization dedicated to helping the under employed with job training. As a dedicated Scouter and volunteer for Gamehaven Council, John currently sits on the Gamehaven Boy Scout board, Leadership team, and is currently the Council Commissioner, responsible for over 3000 scouts and 1500 volunteers. John was awarded the District award of Merit in 2012, the highest award a district volunteer can be awarded, and with great honor, John received the Silver Beaver award, the highest award a Council can give. John also enjoys serving on the advisory council for the Small Business Development Center in Southern Minnesota, a governmental agency set up to mentor and guide small entrepreneurial start-ups and rapidly growing small companies.

Mustaqeem Siddiqui
Physician & Entrepreneur

Mustaqeem Siddiqui, MD, MBA is a practicing Hematologist/Oncologist and Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic, and is immersed in developing new technologies, products, and services in patient care.  Mustaqeem is currently a Medical Director in Mayo’s Global Business Solutions business unit, where he supports New Product Development.  Mustaqeem previously led venture formation and business development at Mayo’s Center for Innovation.  He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the Mayo Clinic. He earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and his passions include entrepreneurship in healthcare, transforming healthcare delivery, and Formula One.


Andrew Danielsen
Director, Business Development – Mayo Clinic Ventures

Mr. Danielsen has been with Mayo Clinic Ventures since 2002 and directs the Technology Development and Business Development team. He assists the team in seeking out and developing new business and technology commercialization opportunities. Prior to joining the office, Danielsen was a Senior Research Technician at Mayo where he conducted breast cancer research and identified novel aspects of signal transduction pathways that emanated from oncogenic EGF receptors. He received a B.S. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and his M.S. degree in molecular biology from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and is a registered patent agent.

Cathy Enerson
EDA Director

EDA Director for three communities in southeastern Minnesota–Eyota, Preston, and Spring Valley. Vast knowledge of construction, real estate,  finance, economics, budgeting, grant writing, and customer service. She has brought hundreds of thousands of grant dollars to the communities she serves. She has created pilot programs with the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation to bring succession planning to local businesses and with Greater Minnesota Housing to pilot revolving loan funds to revitalize rental housing above downtown commercial spaces. Cathy worked with the EDA Board in Preston to showcase area assets and strengthen the local economy, and she is responsible for the creation of the National Trout Center.  Cathy is presently working on Main Street revitalization. Cathy is a graduate of Mankato State with a degree in Finance and Economics, and she holds a MN Realtors License. Through her work, Cathy is a member of the Rochester Area Builders, the Preston Chamber, and the Spring Valley Chamber. Cathy is also a member of the Southeast MN Association of Realtors and secretary of the Byron Community Foundation.

Senior leader in Information Management Analytics division in the department of Information Technology. 30 years as an IT professional with over 28 of those years at Mayo Clinic. Kari has a Computer Science degree from Luther College and a master’s degree in Human Health Services Administration from St. Mary’s College of Minnesota.


Kelly Krajnik
Business Development Manager - Mayo Clinic Ventures

She is responsible for seeking out novel technologies at Mayo Clinic and facilitating their development and commercialization by working with Mayo Clinic research and clinical staff, companies, entrepreneurs, and investors. Prior to joining Ventures, Kelly served on a Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board and worked as a Senior Research Technologist developing and conducting microarray expression protocols in support of research programs within Mayo Clinic. Kelly received a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and an M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas. Kelly is also a registered Patent Agent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.


Nate Nordstrom

Nate Nordstrom is the Founder & CEO of BrandHoot, a local web and app development group located at the historic Conley Maass Downs building. With a strong focus on user experience (UX) design and prototyping, Nate and team enjoy solving hard UX problems in ways that make technology easier, better, faster, and happy. BrandHoot has been graciously awarded numerous times locally and nationally, including being named a national finalist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Small Business of the Year award which included a trip to Washington D.C. Nate is a husband and father of three. His biggest life lesson lately is to be more selective in saying yes to opportunities, so that family, faith, and personal health can thrive. When priorities at home and within are properly placed, things at work improve as well. And his best piece of advice is to remember that life is short. Make every day count.

Review Board Judge for the MN Cup entrepreneur competition sponsored by the Carlson School of Management. Randy is currently Hardware Development Manager, for a VLSI computer chip design organization at IBM. Randy has 28 years of experience in engineering management and VLSI chip design engineering roles, and holds an MBA and a Master’s degree in electrical engineering. Randy has held a variety of leadership roles that have developed experience in program management and business administration including operations, managerial finance, business planning, and change management. Randy also has multicultural competence in establishing, developing and managing new global teams and partners.

Entrepreneur In Residence

Michael has led over 60 Techstars Startup Weekend events throughout the US, Canada, and Australia. He teaches workshops, designs programs, and speaks on a variety of topics related to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Michael has worked professionally in marketing technology startups, with big data, non-profit fundraising, customer support systems design, technical project management, educational program development, event production and decor, iOS app design, video games, user testing, prototyping, and in the coffee industry.

His own past and present business ventures include several SaaS web app platforms, photography, woodworking, printing, audio engineering, video production, musical composition/recording/performance, publishing, art curation, operating an Amazon Pro Merchant storefront, and a funnel cake stand.

Michael guides innovative communities to build and nurture regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. He guides corporations through internal innovation and intrapreneurship. 

He frequently works as a freelance business development consultant, crowdfunding guru, technical project manager, and as a marketer — focused on branding, messaging, storytelling, social media, and email marketing.

Michael loves hiking in Yosemite, bicycling around San Diego, eating authentic Baja California Mexican food, and drinking amazing coffee in Seattle.

Nicholas gravitates towards leadership, coaching, and teaching roles. He has been a counselor at a domestic abuse shelter and a counselor at a Christian camp serving children; and, he has filled management roles in retail, restaurants, and financial institutions.
