Startup Weekend Classic is happening August 12-14!

Here in San Diego, we've put on some amazing Startup Weekend Editions, including MEGA (web, mobile, and maker), Education Edition, Women's Edition, Veteran's Edition, and even Social Impact Edition.

This time, we're throwing back to the original style - Classic, if you will - of Startup Weekend. Bring your idea - any idea! - to Startup Weekend and build it from concept to launch in only 54 hours. It promises to be one of our best events yet!

Review agenda for the weekend and introduce speakers, coaches, and community leaders

Optionally line up to give your pitch

Form Teams
Teams start forming and discussing ideas

Begin Work
Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Aaron Fulkerson
Founder & CEO at MindTouch

Aaron Fulkerson is a founder and the CEO of MindTouch. MindTouch, Inc is a provider of cloud based software that uses product and support content to drive customer engagement and success. MindTouch doubles website traffic, shortens sales cycles, and turns new users into experts and brand advocates. 

Previously, Aaron worked at Microsoft in Advanced Strategies and Policies where he researched distributed systems. Aaron has informed national education policy at the White House. Jeanine Jacobson

Jeanine Jacobson is the San Diego Partner for the Founder Institute. Prior to the Founder Institute, She was with Athena, the premier organization for executive women in technology and life sciences, where she served as Executive Director/President for seven years. She directed all aspects of the organization including board management, fundraising, operations, member relations, and marketing. 

Jeanine's background includes business development for a healthcare system and wireless technology company in San Diego developing new services, physician practices and health plan contracts.

Ms. Jacobson is a graduate of the University of San Diego, where she earned an M.B.A. and M.S.N. degrees. She is active in the Corporate Directors Forum and a number of other industry and professional societies in the San Diego area. Jeanine's strong background in the life sciences, healthcare and telecommunications, along with her success in fund raising make her an asset to the Founder Institute as the organization pursue its far-reaching goals.

Alex Huppenthal

I'm a CEO for several small startup companies, with a deep understanding of the market, regulatory and technology forces that shape initial business opportunities and continue to drive business response, with skills needs, product evolution and market and sales support. I've presented to Sand Hill Road Venture Capital companies and am comfortable working at the C level with the largest technology companies, including Sprint, British Telcom, AT&T, Smart, DTAC, Microsoft, the GSMA.

Ash Kumra

Ash Kumra is an award winning entrepreneur, author, speaker and syndicated radio show host. He has been recognized by the White House and President Obama as one of the top 100 entrepreneurs in the country under 30.

Strategist, serial entrepreneur, TEDx speaker, and polymath, Joon S. Han is on a mission to help as many bright entrepreneurs as possible – that’s why he LOVES Startup Weekend! (This is his fourth time and counting...)

Lauren Avenius

Lauren Avenius (BS in Sociology, Bard College) is a lead Operations and Strategy consultant for AERES, where she is focused on go-to-market and execution. An expert on creating opportunities, eliminating inefficiencies and delivering high impact results, she believes that success is determined in the details. Before AERES, Ms. Avenius led strategy and operations for Sony Electronics, where she launched the Top 50 key products into market, including new product platforms such as 4k and Hi Res Audio, and was awarded the COO Award for Excellence five times. She also was the founder of SPIN, the Sony Professional Intrapreneur Network. With her expertise in consumer products and mobility, she brings a keen eye for strong consumer engagement. Ms. Avenius is a member of Global Shapers, a World Economic Forum Initiative, helping to bring forward technologies that help humanity. She also engages with members in South America and Europe, leading innovation workshops for business and government through Innovators Collective, a collaborative venture with Connected Dreamers.

Harrison Schaen
CIO @ TITAN / CEO @ Issue Fixers

Harrison Schaen is a Princeton University graduate who has over 20 years of experience in Technology, Marketing, and Sales with the current objective of cultivating the Startup community in San Diego and helping shape the city's tech ecosystem. 

CEO and Founder of Issue Fixers (, Schaen spent a majority of his life either on the basketball court at the highest level or in front of a computer, excelling as a professional in both. Creator of the LADDER development methodology and co-creator of JETFUEL, the rapid prototyping program, Schaen has helped grow hundreds of businesses, including his own, which grew from 2 employees on day 1, to over 60 employees in over 14 countries worldwide. 

In his professional career, Schaen has been a designer, product manager, sales rep, marketing manager, web developer, Sr. developer, technical director, founder and CEO. He has been a resident of San Diego since 2011, is Communications Co-Lead for Startup San Diego, and Executive Director of San Diego Startup Week 2017.

Amanda Nelson
Founder & Creative Director at Jupiter Production House

Amanda Elisha Nelson is the Founder of Jupiter Production House and is a social media expert with a passion for using video to tell stories. She believes in helping those with stories to tell, share them using innovative videos + the power of social media. Amanda enjoys pulling together a collective of creatives to help take a video from concept to creation. Amanda loves working with nonprofits, creatives, and social entrepreneurs to help them make a difference.

Before starting her production company, Amanda held a career in corporate marketing for 7 years in Salt Lake City working with Extra Space Storage, C.R. England, Zions Bancorporation, and Wyndham Vacation Ownership. Amanda relocated to San Diego in 2013 to follow her dreams of focusing on social media in a sunny city by the ocean. In the 3 years since relocating to San Diego she has served as Social Media Director for TEDx America’s Finest City, Chief Relationship Officer at SDX – San Diego Ad Club, Public Relations Assistant at Sundance Film Festival and as a Social Media Specialist for the American Film Institute Film Festival. She is passionate about volunteerism and regularly donates her time + social media knowledge to film festivals and marketing conferences like Interactive Day San Diego, South by Southwest, San Diego Film Festival, Big Bear Film Festival and Los Angeles Film Festival.

Marco Soto
Co Founder at MUUB, Restaurantes FM, HUB STN

An Industrial Engineer with Business & Technology orientation focused on building platforms for small companies and entrepreneurs to become more productive and competitive. Professionally have worked alongside leading foodservice companies in Mexico and US by helping them become more competitive through implementing Strategic Management and Continuous Improvement that has lead to Optimized operations by integrating SOP's, supply chain management and customized software to increase inventory and business controls. As an active Startup community member in the Calibaja region, have been promoting and integrating the crossborder entrepreneur community by cofounding Tijuana's first binational coworking space, co-organizing Startup Weekend and being a fellow of Startup Leadership program.

Erik Birkfeld

Over the last 18 years Erik has devoted his career to Software Development Product Engineering with a focus on Process and Strategies. His core competencies are considered to be  product and software engineering, engineering processes, and team creation and collaboration.
