Take your business idea from a dream into reality in 54 hours

The hardest part of starting up is starting out.

At Techstars Startup Weekend, you'll move FAST to get your business idea off the ground in just a single weekend. You'll find smart, passionate people and the very best resources to get you started. 
  • Meet your future teammates, mentors, friends and investors. Techstars Startup Weekend brings together aspiring entrepreneurs  and the very best startup leaders and mentors in the community
  • Learn tools and practices to build great products and get your first customers. By the end of the weekend, you'll build a prototype, get your first sign-ups, and maybe even earn your first dollar
  • Move fast. At Techstars Startup Weekend, you won't be sitting in a classroom. You'll dive right in and learn by doing

What do you need to bring?

Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.

Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.

Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend long experience. Your ticket includes:

Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Danielle Rees
Co-Founder, Coalition Snow

Danielle co-founded Coalition Snow, the only ski and snowboard company by women, for women. She's passionate about encouraging women in entrepreneurship and leadership, and in her previous lives, served as the Executive Director for Girls on the Run Sierras, a ski and snowboard instructor, whitewater raft guide, and worked in public policy for Planned Parenthood. 

Erik Swan
Entrepreneur, Investor

Erik has over 30 years working in Silicon Valley, and did time @ a couple of big companies. He founded 5 startups, 4 were venture backed, and each one getting better as he got it figured out. Now he's investing in others, and believes in Tahoe's future as an alternative for entrepreneurs. He wished he could have lived here and still done what he wanted, and would love to enable that for others.

David LaPlante
CMO, Property Radar

David LaPlante is CMO of targeted local marketing platform PropertyRadar where 1,000s of small businesses find and connect with their best potential customers. Previously David was CEO of Twelve Horses (acquired 2009) and co-founder of Nevada's Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology where he served as chairman 2006-2011 and organized six tri-state business plan competitions awarding over $2 million in prizes. More recently, David has served as startup board advisor to Requested (acquired by Waitr 2016); Fluri (acquired by Snocru 2016); Chrysallis (acquired by Arduro 2017); and Noble Studios, a 5X Inc. 5000 winner and 2014 SBA Small Business of the Year.

Software Engineer

I'm a Software Engineer and customer success team lead at and recently built and sold a couple small SAAS companies. I'd love to help out with technical direction and also helping think through customer validation.

Judy DePuy
Principal Consultant at Proactive Marketing

Judy is a product marketing/management specialist with a unique background of engineering and business acumen with a degree from Stanford (BSCE) and Santa Clara (MBA). Judy has experience working with both start-ups and established companies. She started her own marketing company, Proactive Marketing, in 2013.

Dave DePuy
Sales and Marketing

Dave has a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and an MBA from UC Berkeley.  Dave has worked in many functional areas including engineering, manufacturing, marketing, sales and CEO for Silicon Valley Startups.  As a side note, Dave was employee number 13 at 3Com and lives in Truckee full-time.  Dave understands the challenges of high growth startups and how to sell well through others

Ray Villaman

Owner of Tahoe Restaurant Group (4 locations at Squaw, Northstar and Heavenly), and one licensed location.  
I have opened 11 restaurants, and assisted with over 150 openings with various chains. 
 I have been involved in 3 tech start ups and have raised over 10 million for these companies.  

Co- Founder of Mobi Munch, a mobile food truck rental company.

Board member of the California Restaurant Association and Aaware, Inc, a Silicon Valley tech start up.  

Past board and advisory seats include: United Enterprise Fund, Maveron Fund,, Freshtxt, and Pacific Community Ventures.  Avid angel investor in numerous start ups.  

Andrew Holmes

Andrew has been creating startups or working for them for over 15 years. Currently spending his time on his 3rd successful startup. Skilled in Product & People Management with a flair for design, he's always willing to help and advise anyone wanting to create their own product.

Ed Steinglass
Principal Consultant

Ed Steinglass -  Can help with sales forecasting methodologies, marketing plans and strategies, sourcing and supply chain issues, as well as general business and financial management challenges. Started my career in sales and product management at IBM. Went on to lead corporate marketing and national sales teams at smaller companies. Then helped a variety of technology start-ups position and promote their products and obtain their first sales. Spent the last twenty years as a business owner continuously growing and re-inventing our business.

Jamie Simon
Managing Member, President

Jamie Simon joined Canopy Strategies, LLC as a Managing Partner in 2010 after ten years with Red Bull North America. After 7 years of delivering marketing programs for Red Bull, Jamie initiated and established all sustainable business practices for Red Bull North America as the global energy drink giant’s first Director of Sustainability. Within Canopy Strategies, she identifies programs that increase profitability, reduce risk and improve brand value for organizations, large and small. These skills are often demonstrated in Jamie’s fervent ability to establish rapport and credibility, encouraging team interaction, cohesion and customer ease. Having worked with a variety of personalities spanning from professional athletes to CEOs, Jamie knows how to build a positively motivated team that will execute. She approaches projects with a vision and enthusiasm that excite people to come together effectively, driven by the common good in a way that launches a successful venture. Perhaps this drive comes from Jamie’s history as a former Red Bull athlete and World Champion freestyle whitewater kayaker, which facilitated her deep connection with nature. Jamie’s goals are based upon finding the intersection of nature and business—where each profits most—and delivering this unique meeting point through her work in corporate social responsibility. After she clocks out, you can usually find Jamie, backcountry skiing, cycling or spending quality time with her friends and family.

Josh Miller

Josh David Miller is the CEO of Mindbox Studios, a custom software development shop and innovation lab, where he works with a diverse group of creatives, strategists, investors, and engineers to help startup founders turn their ideas into winning products and get them to market.

Leveraging a background in large-scale marketing analytics initiatives and an intense passion for science and education, JDM has helped dozens of startup achieve product-market fit by focusing on hypothesis testing, measurement, and rapid iteration. He believes creating memorable, delightful user experience is paramount. He also believes creating great products means embracing failure. If one has never had a bad idea, how would she know if it was a good one?

Oh, and JDM only uses his powers for good.
