Startup Weekend is coming to Ventura County!

Startup Weekend, the world’s largest entrepreneurial event organization that has brought together over 190,000 entrepreneurs in 150 countries (That's more than starbucks!) around the globe  is coming to Ventura County March 11-13 2016!

In just 54 hours, you will experience the highs, lows, fun, and pressure that make up life at a startup. As you learn how to create a real company, you'll meet the very best mentors, investors, cofounders, and sponsors who are ready to help you get started. Your community is here to help you.

Startup Weekend Ventura County - Internet of Things, Healthcare and Agriculture will bring together local entrepreneurs, developers, designers and startup enthusiasts intent on learning what is like to share ideas, form teams, and practice launching a startup over 54 hours.

Attendees will pitch their ideas to the audience in 60 seconds or less. After teams form, the rest of the weekend will be spent implementing the most popular ideas  with the help of mentors and seasoned startup entrepreneurs. By Sunday, teams will be ready to present their prototypes before a panel of judges who include:

Jacqui Irwin
Assemblymember represent California’s 44th Assembly District

Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin was elected in November 2014 to represent California’s 44th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Camarillo, Casa Conejo, Channel Islands Beach, El Rio, Lake Sherwood, Moorpark, Oak Park, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Rosa Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village. Her Committee appointments have allowed her to champion policies and legislation which will have a direct impact on Ventura County; Assemblymember Irwin Chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee, and serves on the Committees on Accountability and Administrative Review, Agriculture, Higher Education, and Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy. Jacqui was also appointed Chair of the Select Committee on Cybersecurity, where she has worked diligently to strengthen our state’s information security infrastructure and protect our most valuable and private data.  Before her election to the State Assembly, Irwin was first elected to the City Council in 2004 and served two terms as mayor of Thousand Oaks Prior to her public service, Irwin was an employee of Teledyne Systems.  She also worked as an engineer at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. While earning a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from UC San Diego, Irwin was an All-American in swimming and attended national championships all four years.  A proud mother of three young adults, Jacqui Irwin and her husband Jon, who serves as Head of Global Business Development for Amazon Instant Video, have lived in Thousand Oaks for nearly 20 years.

Between 2007 and 2009, he also served as Vice President GM, IC & Integrated Product Division at Vishay Siliconix.  Mr. Guerra originally started with IR in Italy. After working in various engineering and technical marketing roles until 1997, he moved to the United States where from 1997 until 2007 he held a number of Director and Vice President level roles. David Nichols

David Nichols is founder and president of Applied Wireless Inc.  Founded in 1999, the company designs and manufactures RF products, including wireless audio, wireless video and remote control products for commercial and industrial applications. David is also co-owner of Opolo Wines in Paso Robles.  David’s interest in agriculture brought him to begin growing 80 acres of wine-grapes in 1997 and then co-founding Opolo Wines in 1999.  Opolo Wines now grows over 280 acres of vineyards and over 60 acres of organic walnuts. Previous to these, in 1981 he co-founded California Amplifier and took it public in 1983.  California Amplifier then manufactured microwave products including satellite dish amplifiers and radar related microwave assemblies. David is also on the boards of local organizations including the Ventura County Boy Scouts, the Camarillo YMCA and is a founding member of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Camarillo.  Born and raised in Southern California, David has a BSEE degree from California State University at Northridge and an MBA from Pepperdine University.

Joe Kreutz

Joe Kreutz is a lifelong resident of Ventura, attended local schools and earned his MBA from California Lutheran University.  At age 32 he became President of a local Savings and Loan and later went on to establish a successful mortgage banking firm in Ventura. In 1996 he was asked by the board of Bank of Ventura to take over as President and CEO.  He helped grow the institution until it was purchased in 2000.   Acting upon his vision of bring community banking back to the community he treasures, in 2002 Joe led a group of local professionals and organized County Commerce Bank, which opened in Ventura in February 2003.  County Commerce is the largest and most successful community bank headquartered in Ventura County, employing 35 local residents.  He serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors as well as President and CEO. The bank has consistently been one of the best performing banks in California, ranking among the top 200 community banks in the nation and earning countless awards.

Chris Sullivan

Chris Sullivan is the Global Healthcare Practice Lead for Zebra Technologies and is responsible for the strategy and marketing functions for the Healthcare vertical business.   Chris began his career with Cardinal Health in 1993 and spent 16 years in sales, marketing, operations, and strategy leadership positions with Cardinal Health.  In 2008, Chris joined W.W. Grainger to lead the strategy formation and creation of their Healthcare business.  While at W.W. Grainger he created an industry first business model, designed around the Environment of Care regulatory standards, and distinguished by its innovation, marketplace differentiation, and commercial success.   Chris is a Board of Directors member and quality control committee chairperson for Chicago based Swedish Covenant Hospital. He also has served as a Board of Director member for the Healthcare Supply Chain Research Consortium, and the 10,000 Villages organization.

Dr. Kelvin Loh is an ENT-otolaryngologist in Thousand Oaks, California and is affiliated with St. John's Regional Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and has been in practice for 49 years. He is one of 5 doctors at St. John's Regional Medical Center who specialize in Otolaryngology.

Richard Montmeny, PhD, PT

Clinical training as a physical therapist co-founded Mystic Physical Therapy/Centers for Physical Therapy in Connecticut, a highly successful outpatient and sports medicine practices. From there, Rich was appointed to assistant professor of physical therapy and director of faculty clinics at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he led strategic planning, clinic growth and the integration of education and research in the school of medicine. Since 2009, Rich served as Assistant Vice President Musculoskeletal Services in the Wentworth-Douglas Health System—with 178 beds, it is the largest not for profit community hospital in the area. He was also one of the key executives responsible for population health management and bundled payment innovations with CMS. Rich received his clinical training at Chapman University and holds a PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Connecticut. Most recently he completed a post-graduate general management program at Harvard Business School.


Randy Hill

Randy Hill is a certified and credited Microsoft Systems Engineer who has obtained certifications in all Microsoft platforms. Randy first gained experience working in the Architectural industry providing computer and program support for several local companies in the Southern California area. Randy’s expertise was widely accepted by professionals and effectively put to use as the Director of Information Technology with California State at Channel Islands area (CSUCI). Randy’s Accomplishments at CSUCI helped the Newly formed CSU campus to be recognized as the most technologically advanced California state university at the turn of the century. It is here where Randy saw the potential to bring enterprise level technologies to small and medium based companies and equip them with the tools necessary to compete with larger corporations. In 2001 Randy co-founded Integrated Network Solutions, LLC which served as a great platform to provide these services to dozens of customers across Southern California. Rennee Dehesa is a long-time board member of the Ventura County Bar Association’s Barristers and is the Chair of the Barristers Mentorship Program. She is also a board member of the Ventura County Bar Association. Ms. Dehesa is Vice President of Education Foundation of the VC MABA, Inc. She serves as Board Member on the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce Board and is Chair of its CSUCI Connection Committee. Originally from California, attended Cal Poly SLO, and Iowa State with a focus on crop breeding.  Worked for DeKalb Genetics for 10 years as a Corn Breeder, then for Monsanto in various Research and Development roles in Seed Production in the US and Europe.  Currently lead a global R&D team focused on reliable, sustainable and high quality seed production and innovative seed processing.


Donald Skinner
Eltron/Zebra Technologies

Mr. Donald Skinner is a successful, experienced business leader. He has been the Chairman / CEO of Skinner Development, which specializes in Real Estate investment and development. He founded Eltron International, Inc. and led it from zero sales to over $130 million in eight years. Eltron received several awards, including a No. 5 ranking on Forbes magazine’s “200 Best Small Companies in America”. Eltron went public on NASDAQ in 1994 and was rated as the number one IPO in the country in terms of revenue, income and stock growth. Mr. Skinner then initiated a highly successful merger between Eltron and Zebra Technologies. He assumed the position of vice chairman of Zebra Technologies. He founded the Skinner Electronics Literacy Project at CSU Northridge, which places computer and software technology into first and second grade classrooms. Originally from Southeast Missouri, involved with production agriculture and seed quality testing for over 30 yrs, accredited seed analysts in the govt and private sector for over 25 yrs, degree in ag business and business admin, small business owner/operator (apple orchard/cider mill) for 5 yrs. Current role is quality control seed testing technical expert supporting local and global seed testing labs, exec. board member and com. chair and com. member in USA and international seed testing associations.  


Martin Shum
Board Member, Camarillo Chamber of Commerce

Martin Shum sits on the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce board of directors as a representative of Dignity Health St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital. He is a former member and past chair of the Community Board for Dignity Health St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo (2007 – 2014). In 1987, Martin founded ACT Networks, Inc., an integrated voice/data wide area networking company. As the chairman, president, and CEO, he took ACT public on NASDAQ (ANET) in 1995. He was also the founder, chairman, president, and CEO of Aprisa Inc. (1998 – 2003), an internet application software company, which he sold to Pioneer Standard Electronics. Martin received his B. Sc. Digital Communication in 1972, both from Loughborough University, England; he was named Greater Los Angeles Area Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996; and he was awarded IEEE Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties Engineer of the Year in 2009.


Minos Athanassiadis

Minos is the founder and Managing Director of Fresh Link Group, an agriculture and technology advisory firm.  Fresh Link works with a broad spectrum of clients from Fortune 500 firms such as Monsanto Vegetable Seeds, John Deere and Walmart, to privately held companies and startups to help define, build and launch new products and services.  He has held a series of food industry positions including Sales and Marketing lead at Dole Fresh Vegetables and President of Underwood Ranches.  At Foodlink, he managed a software sales and implementation team which delivered a SaaS application to over 2,000 companies providing food products to retail grocers, including, Safeway, Wegmans and Ahold USA.  He is currently working with Agrian, a company which provides Advanced Agronomy and Compliance tools for more than 100,000 farmers, crop consultants and food companies in the US and Canada. Athanassiadis earned an MBA from Northwestern University and a BA in economics from the University of California at Davis.


Matt Kozlov
Managing Director, Healthcare Accelerator

Matt is the Managing Director of Techstars Healthcare Accelerator, in partnership with Cedars-Sinai.  Matt was most recently the Head of Corporate Development at Telesign, a leading antifraud firm and one of LA’s fastest growing technology companies.  Previously he was CEO of Moonshark, a venture backed by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Qualcomm bringing to market original mobile entertainment.  He has also worked at Sony Music Entertainment (VP, Web & Mobile Products), Yahoo! (corporate strategy, product development) and Bain and Company (management consulting).  He graduated from Harvard, where he studied economics.  
Matt is an advisor to several LA-based companies including Chromatik, Vyng, Rattleback Rye, and Alpha Edison.  He was named one of Fast Company’s 27 leading characters in Hollywood’s Digital landscape.

Attorney

Mark is an attorney at Cardona Law in downtown Santa Barbara. 

He was the director of operations at Otojoy, and attend LaVerne College of Law.
 
Mark facilitated the 2015 Startup  Weekend and is a sponsor with Cardona Law assisting with legal advice for the winning teams.
